All I can report right now is that Simon is working on the driver issue. There are rev.002 boards at least prototypes and they won’t have the programability issue but as for timing and all else I’m not sure yet. I’ll let you all know when I have confirmation that all is well.

Ask him to release a black one with all the same specs as the clear/silver one. I tried to ask him directly, but he never understood what I was talking about. Just kept asking me for the transaction id number. Facepalm language barrier.

From my personal experience he doesn’t comfirm or deny that he understood what I asked for, he just somehow takes care of it and ships. So I assume if he asked for the transaction, he is ready to ship. Would that make sense?

Not really. I asked him the question, I never created a transaction. Therefore, there is no transaction ID.

I think he’d presume you’ve checked out the Clear version and now would like to have an all black version, but with the upgraded internals, hence asking you for the transaction ID to act upon the request.

Good point. I did not consider that. However, a little clarity would be nice. Especially since he only provides one very brief, vague comment per day.

My opinion of simon is that his convoy products are outstanding, but his ordering process is a mess.

Keep in mind that he’s not a native speaker, his company is small and has few employees (if at all), and his schedule is full to the point of bursting – for the size of the business, Convoy is extremely popular.

Frankly to me, Simon has one of the best customer service in China online portals. While some other sites does reply on a faster rate as they have full time customer service personnel, but it doesn’t solve my problem. All I get out of it is being pass around like a ball or giving me SOP replies, which goes no where.

Simon sees my problem, be apologetic bout it, poof conclusion, problem solved. Right to the point.

As for the ordering system, it’s owned by Aliexpress, he just had a store in it. Just like how a seller in eBay is. Problem arises when there are ‘custom’ orders. But then he’s going the extra mile in the first place trying to accommodate us with that custom order.

On other China websites, you’ll just a quick “Sorry, we don’t do that” response.

Just my humble opinion.

How is this firmware called?
I thought it is “biscotti” and I downloaded that but it behaves strangely, after bunch of taps (to get to group selection menu) it doesn’t turn off like it should but stays in some low mode!
I just wanted to set one mode (100%) only to get measurements because I stacked additional AMC chips and I flicked quickly (its 2 after midnight here) through last 10-20 pages searching for fw name so I could check if I had wrong fw or my driver doesn’t want to cooperate!

Hunter, the firmware is Toykeeper’s biscotti. You can find more info here

I was actually able to learn how to switch modes following Lexels advice

Let me know if that worked Thumbs Up

Hmm I looked up but could not find the exact issue. What kind of issue it has? I want to buy this with gearbest coupon but your message made me terrified :S

The Convoy lights that use the new firmware, like this clear C8, are a little harder to set the modes. You have to press the buttons pretty quick to choose your options.

Also, the flashy modes like strobe, Beacon and SOS flash a bit faster than they should.

That’s all. Not a big deal.

Do this year’s samples still have that problem quirk? Just in case anyone’s already received a new torch from Simon.

I got my clear Convoy C8 in mid February and it has this fast timer bug. It was a little bit difficult to configure the desired mode. But because my mode of choice does not use blinkies this problem does not bother me.

Just wanted to confirm (finally) that I downloaded code from Toykeeper’s website (quite confusing site structure) flashed it and it works just fine. I dont know why it did not work with previous driver but I suspect that it has something to do with my adding 4 more AMC chips before flashing while this time I uploaded code first, tested the driver and them added 4 more AMCs.
So, thanks caramba Thumbs Up

Then I’m guessing you didn’t get it from Simon…? I meant people that bought from his Aliexpress store after it re-opened on 16th Feb.

Question.
(sorry if there is an answer somewhere above, did not check all the pages)

If I buy any of the bare biscotti drivers at this moment at Simon’s store, will they:

1) for certain have fixed firmware?
2) likely have fixed firmware but you could be unlucky
3) likely have unfixed firmware but you could be lucky
4) for certain have unfixed firmware.

As soon as the answer is 1) I will buy a bunch of these great drivers again.

You could ask simon. But, good luck with the reply.

Hey all. I’m still working with Simon on this. He has a new driver board layout ready that doesn’t ground pin #2 and has more clearance around the MCU for easier flashing. The driver boards are going to be labeled v.2. I do not believe any are being sold quite yet. ToyKeeper recently informed me that she is putting the final touches on the latest revision of Biscotti and it will be delivered to Simon as soon as it’s ready. The updated firmware should be a little more tolerant of slight component changes and therefore more stable. Good things to come, just hang in there.

FWIW I got my clear c8 from Simon a couple of days ago. Seems flawless to me. A bit difficult to get into configuration mode but that was just a matter of practice. I did somehow manage to have it go back to default configuration but I may very well have done that as I was messing around getting amp readings of the different modes. Put it back to my preferred mode 2 memory on and it has stayed.

Thanks again J-Dub, Simon, and ToyKeeper!!! This really is a nice light!

I have a few C8’s on order. Can someone clarify to me what thickness to reduce the centering ring spacer down to. I have a few lathes so Im thinking I could easily do this.

What is the stock thickness vs modded thickness?

Also where to source a thicker lens o-ring? What diameter & thickness for o-ring?

Thanks

Is thermal runaway a risk with leaving a C8 on at 100% power? Or does the light automatically step-down or have thermal protection to prevent this?

Alternatively, could I simply request the light configured with 7135×4 so it could be permanently used by muggles and hand it to someone without having to worry?
