Convoy S2+ or Astrolux S1

I was having a look at the 2 above and thought I’d see if anyone has experience of both and if so whether you have any preference of one against the other.

I’m leaning towards the Astrolux but mainly because you can use it as 18350 or 18650 … that said I was sure I saw a S2 + mini a while back which offered the same although I’m struggling to find them online at the moment.

If anyone has any comments on either I’d be interested in hearing them!!!

18350 tubes are available at the Convoy store @ Aliexpress. I would pick the S2+, but I am huge Convoy fan.

I own 3 S2+, several C8, ThorFire C8s and more going forward. Quality is top, never had an issue and they are also very easy to mod, parts are available everywhere.

If you are going to mod light, convoy is your choise.

S1 is closer to the S2 Convoy as it has a slightly deeper reflector and will project slightly narrower than the S2+.
S1 already has a FET driver and comes with the shorty tube. More modes and choices in the S1 (at the moment).

So; if you intend to keep it AS-IS.
Get the S1
For mods get S2+

If the new Convoy firmware was available right now in the S2, I may point you to the S2 instead. However the new Convoy firmware is not on a FET driver.

Hey mate big difference in the lights. The S1 is light made by this forum we had a group buy last year and this is what was made its originally called the BLF A6. I would choose the S1 its much brighter and is already well fished comes with AR coated Glass and the BLF Direct drive uses a Cree XPL running at 5+ amps for 1500 lumens output and the S2+ uses a XML2 on a linear driver for about 3amps depending on the model you buy for about 1000 lumens output. Both are about the same size.

and if you buy Convoy buy directly from Convoy, using Simon’s web page at Ali.

You may pay a dollar or two more than the prices you sometimes see at third party sellers, who sometimes offer more chips or different emitters.
The resellers also also often omit the retaining ring for the driver and instead or on top of the retaining ring plop big globs of solder so you can’t easily modify the light.
And from time to time counterfeits have also been for sale.

Cheers for everyone’s input … I think I’ll go with the S1 for now - probably get a Convoy as well at some stage as being a new addict I’m sure my finger will accidentally slip onto the buy now button by mistake one day

Sounds like the S1 may be a bit more of a thrower ??? And I like the optional modes it seems to offer and can be bought with the 2 different tubes from day one.

Just seems to tick more boxes especially as I don’t intend to mod at this stage.

Just for longer term … where the S2 is more modable …. if you dropped an XPL Hi into it I guess it’d give quite a reasonable throw ….

S2 and S2+ are the easy Triple emitter Mod hosts.

The S2+ has more tint options, and is your only choice of the two if you want warm white in the stock light.

Astrolux S1 and Convoy S3 here. Turned both into triples. Kept the driver in the S1. Bought the S3 by mistake but glad I did since it has the Stainless bezel. A bit hard to work on with the integrated shelf but worth it.
Like a previous post said, if your going to use “as is” they are both great, but I would vote S1 because of the driver options.
If your modding, S2+.

IMO Stock Convoy S2+ is rather conservative. Stock BLF A6/Astrolux S1 is a stick of dynamite with a high drain battery. Somehow it is already a modded/tuned up S2… It depends on what you are comfortable with.

Not to argue, but I have the Astrolux S1 in the 3D tint….which is, to me, on the warm side of neutral (noticeably warmer than my Zebralight SC62w). The S1 also comes in the 5A tint, which is supposed to be even warmer (more yellow).

I’m referring to warm white as around 3000k which isn’t available for the S1 (stock)

Understood.

Unless the reflector in the S1 is totally different than the BLF A6, I don’t think this information is correct. The the reflectors in my A6 lights are virtually identical to the S2+, except than the A6 reflector has a tiny lip for the o-ring. The beam patterns are also pretty much identical. The reflector from the S2 is much longer than the A6 reflector.

I have both the Convoy S2+ & the Astrolux S1/BLF A6, & the Astrolux S1/BLF A6 has become my favourite EDC owing to its high output, & the SUPERB UI by our own ToyKeeper.

I have the Astrolux S1/BLF A6 in 1A, 3D, & 5A tints, and the 5A tint has become my favourite for EDC.

Best Regards,

George

Can anyone tell me if these batteries will fit / work with the S1 for 18650’s these

and for 18350’s these

I haven’t tried protected 18650B… not sure the protection will stand turbo? If you want to get the most out of a DD light you should use high drain cells like 30Q, Efest, VTC5, HG2…

The KP 18650 looks good.

If you scroll down a bit to the specification in the box grid next to Max Output it says 18650 protected ???

I’m also trying to kill 2 birds with one stone as I have another torch where the Keeppower button doesn’t sit up high enough so ideally want something that works with both … I had a look at efests and they seem to be flat top???

The easy answer is get both. Neither are expensive.

I have several Convoys and they are great very useful lights. The S2+ is more the flooder while the regular S2 has a deeper reflector and throws better.

Stock Convoys are good honest easy to use lights. And you can choose your tint and power of the driver. The top 7135*8 driver is really more than adequate and pretty much as bright as most tube lights from Fenix and similar. But it can get a little hot for prolonged use. A lower output driver like the 4*7135 will run on high continually and be brighter than the other driver in mid mode, but with less heat than the high output of the other driver. For bike use or long on times. This will work better.

I buy Convoy stuff from Simon direct (he is Convoy) on Aliexpress or from banggood. The latter because Aliexpress doesn’t use PayPal.

Whatever you get, grab yourself some of Simons superb deep carry pocket clips. I use them on my BLF A6 and my Convoys as well as loads of other lights.

For me the only downer with the Convoys lights is a lack of moonlight. But as they are easy to mod I’ve fitted Qlite drivers to many of them. However I believe there will be a new driver in the Convoy lights over the coming weeks/months. That will solve this.

The A6/S1 driver is good too. But quite different. 7 modes can be a lot to get used too. And the muggle mode gives you little extra over other lights. My only beef with this driver is its slooow to get to turbo. But it is highly usable. Turbo will give higher output than stock Convoys. But it’s not a night and day difference and you will get more heat.

All the lights are great. The S2+’s metal switch is the best of the bunch and I really like the styling and colours. The regular S2 is a bit hohum looking by comparison. The A6/S1 is a pleasant design too.

You really won’t go wrong with any. But depends if you want to mod or not. The S1 won’t need modding. But the Convoys can be improved upon for modest outlay.
