Hunting/weapon light

Right now I run a Convoy c8 xm-l2 at 3.8 amps. Gives me good throw/spill combo for night hunting in the high desert.
Light is a little bigger then I want though.
Thinking a Convoy m1 xm-l2 dedomed .
Never done a dedomed light so not sure if the beam will be too tight plus the smaller reflector may not give me what I’m after.
Wouls like opinions from people that run dedomed lights please.
Thanks
Randy

Can you explain your requirements for night hunting, such as distance, prey, weapon, etc…? People might be able to give you some better advise.

Coyotes and smaller varmints out to 100 yards max on a 6x45 or 223 AR15 platform.
And need to keep a 1” body to fit my light mount.

You may want to check out the Maxtoch lights. They have larger reflectors and 1” bodies, but will throw like crazy. If you got something like the 2X, you may need a riser for your rail mount. Even though a light like the 2x will throw way more than you need, it does have 3 modes. low, med, high, and you can get a remote pressure switch.

The Maxtoch M24 BLF versions are made for this job, but longer distances, so just drop to low mode and you’re all set for 100yd work. These are ~one hour runtime on high; low should let you stay out as long as you want. And these handle the recoil of large rounds well so that shouldn’t be a problem. And yes, they’re made for 1” mounts. I don’t think you can do better for the money. For less money you could get a stock M24 which should also do well at the shorter ranges you have.

Since C8 is kinda big light for you then EE X6 /Astrolux S3 would be the best choice especialy on a .223 rifle : i have a setup like that on my .223 Steyr AUG A2
MIne is Dded XPG2 one, 130k mcds, effective work range is arround 200 meters( a non armed eye one, with a scope its better ofc)

I am pretty confident that someone here will gradly mode one for you

Or a modded M22 Warrior……why not also Luckysun D80, yet X6 is the best for your needs.

Since I noticed this thread, I might ask another gunlight question…

How about a tactical light for automatic/semiautomatic rifle?

Needs are: -it has to be reliably started always on 100% power. Preferrably no other modes on the light.
–18650 powered

All I can think of is some programmable driver or just some C8 with driver swap.

Any options to buy straight from the shelf?

Thanks for the info everyone.
I should of also said I make/mod my own lights so that gives me a lot more options.

I would still like to know how a dedomed m2 compares to a c8

My main light is an M1 with an XM-L2, but not dedomed. I haven't handled a C8, so I can't compare the two, but tonight I can take the M1 outside and do some 100 yard testing and see how it looks, not sure how to get pictures of that, though. Using it inside of buildings, however, it will throw to 100 yards, not sure if it'll give you exactly what you want though, might look for something with a bigger/deeper reflector.

In my search for something like you mention, I just built a Convoy S2+ with an XM-L2 and the qlite driver with guppydrv, so I could change modes between 100% only or 100%/strobe. I’m keeping it in my pocket for now to see how I like it, but wanted something lightweight but powerful. My biggest concern is going to be how it holds up to recoil. On a 5.56 or 5.45, recoil is pretty small, but I don’t want it to shake itself apart over time or lose contact with the battery.

I have a couple m1 and c8 hosts here waiting to get built along with some m1 and c8 already built and in use.
Real curios how a dedomed m1 would compare to a standard c8.
I know the m1 does better then a p60 because of the slightly larger reflector.
I guess I’ll just have to get a few dedomed and build one for myself
On the couple weapon lights i made they are potted then I put o-rings front and rear of the battery so it doesn’t slam into anything under recoil or loose spring contact

EDIT:Changed, meant M1 not M2

I think they will be similar in beam lux and beam size. I made a M2 with XPL HI V2 3B with 3A driver and it did 31Kcd. So direct driven it might do 46Kcd, which is probably close to a C8 with domed XML/XPL. Of course if you choose top binned emitters you can get ~25% more.

Dropped an XM-l2 u4 1c into gas for a dedome. hope to get the light assembled into a Convoy m1 this weekend.
Will update when I get a chance to test it out

I think you’ll be happy with it, that’s the emitter I have in my M1, just not de-domed, and I can put a nice little hot spot on the back walls of a venue around 200 feet away, with the house lights on.

Sounds good! Looking forward to the “update”. :+1:

My answer to both questions, for the smaller than a C8 hunting rifle light/tactical rifle light.... Solarforce L2P host (MTN) Bypass the switch, bare SMO P60 drop-in from MTN, FET+1 Bistro driver from MTN bypass the spring, XPL HI V2 3D on noctigon. Wrap the pill with copper for a tight fit.

The SMO P60 from RMM throws great for what it is (don't use the spacer, use the thin clear 3M gaskets). I'd bet it'll throw better or as good as an M1. + it has the forward clicky which is what is needed for both situations. Setup Bistro for 1 mode, 100% only....

Find RMM and ask him about the XinTD C8. Unless I’m misremembering, I recall one of the options on his C8s as being 1-mode wide-open at 3’n’change amps (8×380mA).

It’s a NANJG 105C under the hood, if I’m not mistaken. My 7135-only drivers only go up to 1.4A.

I was curious so I just checked a few lights.

1) Convoy C8/XPL HI V2 3D/Direct Drive - 4440 lux @ 5M, 111 kcd

2) Solarforce L2P SMO Reflector/XPL HI V2 3D/Direct Drive- 1900 lux @ 5M, 47.5 kcd

3)Convoy M2/Dedomed XML2 U3 3D/ Direct Drive-1600 lux @ 5M, 40 kcd

4)Convoy M1/Domed XML2 U4 1C/Direct Drive- 990 lux @ 5M, 24.75 kcd

5)Convoy M2/Domed XPL 80+ CRI 3000k/Direct Drive- 800 lux @ 5M, 20 kcd

All batteries were either 30q or vtc5 at 4.2v.

Hmmm, I got to thinking about this and pulled out one of my M1’s.

It has a XM-L2 U3 2C and a MTN 17DDm driver. When it gets dark I’m gonna give it a whirl and refresh my memory about it.

I surely will be looking forward to your de-dome results, it may be time to “drop one in the gas” for me too.
