I’ve used LG HG2 and Samsung 30Q. Both performed well. No testing done other than real world usage, which I am satisfied with. The batteries Olight sells with the light are 8 amp max continuous, so anything better than or equal to that should suffice.
Besides the included 3500mAh Olight branded 18650, I've also tested X7 with button top Panasonic NCR18650B, it works OK, switching to Turbo and Turbo S with no problem so far. Flat top cells doesn't work tho.
Looking at the battery comparator the LGMJ1 seems to be the best performer of the 3500mAh unprotected cells. I’m about to order 4 from imrbatteries.com with the new discount code. I would order them from mtn but there’s only two button tops in stock.
They should be fine. They perform quite similarly to the 35E Samsungs and considering a protection circuit always adds some internal resistance, an unprotected MJ1 should outperform the protected 35Es. Look at HKJ’s comparator at lygte-info.dk at 7/10A.
I just purchased some Panasonic ncr18650ga unprotected cells with Raised top and now I see that people say the Raised top won’t work only button top is that correct? Also I cannot see why a battery with 10 amp discharge shouldn’t work perfectly with the x7. They only need to be equal or greater than 8a.
I am sure something was wrong here. The Panasonic protected nipple top 18650ga cells should work fantastic in this light, as they are rated for the same 10a max discharge current as the mj1 and 35e cells.
OK thanks for the advice. I’m waiting for four of those to arrive, was rather hoping with the addition of some button tops and being 10 amp I could use them when my x7 arrives, looks like I’ll have to buy something else now though as got plenty of 18650 but none that will safety do more than 10 amps.
What to buy though?, would like at least 3200mah + cells, unprotected with button tops?
So it seems that some people are having issues with various cells dropping down the brightness to a lower level after a second or so of Turbo S use. JohnnyMac did a great review of the Olight X7 and experienced the issue with the Olight cells designed specifically for the X7 (see his Conclusion section - link below) and other people have reported some problems with other cells also. I also experienced the problem and thought it was just my cells - but apparently not. Btw - I also have the Samsung 30Q’s and never experience any problem with those cells.
