Help find budget headlight

Hello everybody,
I am looking for budget headlight in range of 7 - 15$.
The criteria are:

  • to have red light;
  • lightweight;
  • robust host, aluminium is prefered;
  • as much as possible modes;
  • to have easy and comfortable UI;
    Battery type are not specified, may be 3 x AAA is not good option;
    I am not looking for high lumens, something about 200 - 300 max is OK.
    Thank you for your advise.

xtar h2

If you can find a decent aluminium headlamp with an extra redlight for 15$ I would be interested too. Closedt I found is the skilhunt H15 single AA for25$ at gearbest last week. But doesn’t have red LED. Xtar H2 looks intersting but seems to be sold out and probably more expensive than 15$.
To be honest I don’t think you will be able to find an aluminium host in that price range. But let us know if you do.

I’m subscribing to this thread… I have a couple of cheapie headlights, but neither of them are great. I have a single-AA headlamp, but it pulls a battery down pretty quickly:

I’d like to find a well-designed 18650-powered headlamp at a budget price; even if I have to mod it to make it useable.

Should be within the limit :wink:

“Waterproof (cannot be put into water)”
Nice! I always thought ‘waterproof’ meant ‘CAN be put into water’… Shows what I know! :student:

Shows that you don’t have any experience with water ratings of wristwatches. :stuck_out_tongue:

Watches use a different rating system; those are rated as “water resistant to 150m” but not for immersion. So basically, it can handled light splashing at 15 atmospheres, but nothing more. :nerd_face:

This headlamp is nice. The light output can be doubled be swapping in an XP-L emitter.

There is a thread on the headlamp here:

EDIT: Opps, not a red light headlamp.

Just tested the Lixada-branded version of this headlamp, and it seems really good for me. Only 100lm, yes, but it seems well built and cost only 8$. When I hike at nighjt I BTW use the “middle” 40-lumen mode, that lasts more than a night long with a single AA…

That’s a nice finding! I was not looking for a headlamp, but now I’m very tempted…

hk equipment has them but OMG did they go up in price.

i gave a freind one i can ask if he would want to part with it?

look for “Black Diamond”

ebay has a bunch with red leds at a nice range of prices.

Do you like this one? price is USD$9.79 on Amazon.

Because it is working with one AA battery and using boost driver it is not possible to have PWM, but can you check it please with camera.
Most probably this is my headlight.
Best regards.

Can’t check with camera but I’m pretty sure it uses PWM, as in some particolar/critical situation PWM flashing becomes slightly visible.

Very strange. It means very low frequency.
On which mode you can find blinking?

I cannot recommend these enough. For the price, if you don’t like them, gift them away.

Isn't it better to use a single AA rather than 3×AAA?

IMHO, absolutely! The 3*AAA is cheaper (and seems a good headlight), but the “total cost of ownership” (and the praticity of use) of a 1*AA in the long run is lower…
