Help with a part please

iI need to know what this part is called. Seems the more you research it the harder it seems to find a correct part name. As far as I can tell it should be or have been made of some type of ceramic as it is just below the base of the heating element. This is from the cheap adjustable temperature iron that I ordered a couple of months ago. As best I can tell if I can replace this part with one of decent quality this iron should still be of some use. Also if anyone happens to know of a type of nut that can be purchased somewhere such as Lowes that would work at least as well. Please see pictures below. As you will see from the pictires the threaded part of the barrel assembly should fit snugly in the cente.

As always thank you all in advance for any and all help.

I think it’s called a nipple.

I think you are correct and I have only come by this information in the last minute or so while still researching.

Problem now is finding one the correct size and thread pattern and would prefer to find one here is the U.S. verses ordering from China using a website none of us may have ever heard of.

LOL I am just not big on throwing things out, and up to the point that the center of the nipple kind of crumbled away and actually melted a bit where it was held in place it actually worked pretty well, at least for some purposes. I would defiantly never leave it plugged in unless I was right there with it, and pretty sure I would not let anyone else use it provided I can find the part.

Update:

I may have this problem solved. I think of all people the seller is going to try to help me out as I have been able to point out the cause of several failures in this iron as well as the bad reviews that come with those.

On this iron the nipple screws onto the base (handle) which is nothing but plastic, at high enough temperatures the nipple loosens because of expansion and contraction. This causes the owner to try and tighten it which in turn strips out the threading of the nipple which then begins to crack/chip and or melt in the center. So either the nipple needs to be of better quality or at the very least better insulated.

If you look at the Hakko models of this type they have some washers and o-rings to help with this and I am sure that the quality of the part is much better.

If I can get him to send me a nipple and can possibly find a better quality part or even better a Hakko replacement that will fit I can probably turn this from a nonworking space taker to at least a fair to maybe decent iron depending on how accurate the temperature adjustment is. I have a much more accurate way to measure the temp of the tip as high as 1500 degrees F. Hopefully I will know one way or another soon.

Thanks for helping out.

There you go; you had your own nipplegate. I’ll see ya soon on TV with your apologies, lol

It’s the technician me. If it does not work or work correctly it will drive me nuts until I find a solution. Drives my wife nuts sometimes, but at work they love it lol…

If it is stripped cant you just put some super glue on the threads and screw or place it back on?
That’s what I would do.

That is actually how I caused that little at the very top to melt a little. I used just a tiny amount of epoxy. And even knowing all that I’ve learned for 20 plus years as a technician… I didn’t check the temp ratings. The epoxy started breaking down under the heat and as far as I can tell caused just enough for the top of the nipple to melt that it really can slip out of the nipple even cold. At even low solder temp. If you move too fast it bends like its melting in half. I picked up spme extreme heat permatex ultra copper rated to 700F that I might try if that starts breaking down there are some compounds rated much higher I can probably use and will work. But if the sell will just a new nipple, I even offered to pay for it. I want the measurements and thread pattern off it. There is a very good chance one of the Hakko replacments will fit. Many of those come with a couple of o-rings and a washer to help that much more. It will cost a little more but I only have about 20 in the iron. I can get a Hakko kit that replaces the element and all hardware from the nipple up for 20 to 30 more. Only thing not included is the Hakko temperature control parts. It would be worth 50 to me just for how easy to find tips. If nothing works I’ve already told the wife. A Hakko is next. I got too many guys wanting these clones refitted with real Cree emitters and hot boards to blow a couple because of heat.

At work with the exception of my department head nobody there can solder anything but maybe some 20 Aug wires together. I can get just qbout anything he can but when he gets out his personal Hakko unless he lets me use it I don’t even try lol.
