Quoting quotes with quotes with quotes...

One of the things I've seen on another forum I frequent is that it prevents multi-level quoting. When a person quotes a quote with a quote with a quote.... etc. here on BLF each reply inside is getting stretched to the point where it fills nearly a whole page. An example can be seen below (sorry I'm pointing out a particular case, it's just the most recent I've noticed).

Can some kind of script be added that prevents this kind of problem? For example, quoting a reply would only show the single message, and hide every quote that was inside?

Something like this:

I have seen a mention of this from two years ago but the discussion didn't go further than perhaps five posts

Those long posts are pretty much a thing of the past with most of us, but it did get a bit out of hand for a while  Better to quote only the relevant posts you’re addressing, and then only if it’s necessary for understanding your response :sunglasses:

Vbulletin has this feature built in but this site uses something else so not sure if it would support such a feature.

IP board also has a function that removes any quotes inside quotes.
I always do it manually here though  would be cool if it could be added/enabled to do it itself.

I love it when someone quotes a giant photo. Not.

Yes especially if your on limited data

Indeed, a limit to the file size of linked photos would be interesting too.

This used to be a fairly regular occurrence, sometimes done to excess for the fun of it. I’d rather avoid engineering out this kind of thing, even grown ups need to get silly sometimes.

+1 If we can’t get silly at BLF, where we gonna go? CPF? :stuck_out_tongue:

Just a bit of common sense fellows, slim down the quotes to the exact phrase/paragraph of choice, or just don't hit the friggin “quote” button, lots of times it's just not needed.

Cheers ^:)

Actually the photo only gets downloaded once, and all future references to it are cached, so no extra data usage.

I don’t know of any way to limit the levels of quotes, although it seems like ToyKeeper had a Javascript hack that she posted somewhere here a while back. Let’s just all try to be a bit more conscientious and prudent with the use of the QUOTE button.

+1

Interesting to know, thanks

Yes, very interesting. What were we talking about? :smiling_imp:
