I have won a few giveaways and figured it was my turn. After reading through one of the ‘BLF isn’t budget anymore’ type threads I remembered a light I had purchased a couple of years ago for less than $2 if I recall. Picked up several of these Supfire S5 lights. Very cheap hosts, and I still had 2 in the back of my cupboard.
My goal was to mod it with only items I had on me and still keep it budget. I think I somewhat succeeded in this. These came with a long, smooth reflector, so I wanted to take advantage of that. I have way too many XMLs in cool temps, so a dedomed XML seemed like a good choice. However, upon opening light I forgot what a puny aluminum pill these had.
The lip around the LED was then filed off so I could add a copper spacer and 20mm board. The added heatsinking meant the stock reflector wouldn’t work since it was too long, so I replaced it with an S2+ reflector. No point in a dedomed LED with a stock S2+ OP reflector. Luckily, I had an XPL on 20mm Noctigon in my box-o-leds. I have no idea of the exact bin, but it turned to be a very nice NW. All pieces held together with thermal adhesive. Added 2 7135 chips to a 105c driver. Nothing fancy here. Soldered the first star, so it’s 3 simple modes. The winner may notice a small chip on one of the chips on the spring side. I wanted the driver to fit as tight as possible into the pill and I added just a little too much pressure. Was going to replace the chip, but a tailcap measurement yielded slightly over 3.5A, so leaving as is. Lens replaced with AR lens.
Removed the ano and added some polishing and lighted tailcap.
To enter, must be a registered member on or before November 22, 2016. Just post, “I’m in” or something similar…I don’t really care. One entry per member. What I don’t want is somebody posting that this is a nice giveaway, but they have too many light lights and good luck to everyone else. Noway…you enter because you don’t have THIS light!! :sunglasses:
Contest ends when I reach 500 posts at which time I’ll randomly choose a winner using random.org or some other method of my choosing such as asking my daughter what her favorite member name is here or shouting each member name at my dog until she barks.
Please note that the illuminated tailcap is from another light. I have 700 LEDs currently in transit, so the winner gets to choose which color tailcap they want. Also note that I have never actually constructed a lighted tailcap, so my remaining posts to get to 500 will most likely be me posting questions in pilotdog’s thread on illuminated tailcaps.
