Well, i guess L6 had too many promos lately thus affected S70 sales alot.
By default S70 is kinda better cause its ano is better and more durable than L6( i will have lotsa “love ” here ) plus it comes with a spare glass and most of all: carrying band, the last one is crusial for such a heavy torch
Yet, L6 got many updates including a SMO reflector, a spare driver….meanwhile Thorfire never responded to all the emails i wrote them, its kinda sux : their support is TERRIBLE though
Simon on the other hand is flexible and cooperative, he always listens to us( atleast to me, most of the times ofc)
I think the L6 probably has a little better build than the S70, and it is much grippier. But I prefer the looks and fins of the S70, and I love the battery indicator under the switch boot.
My S70 has a simple solder blob on the driver, shaved dome, and SS bezel. It’s one light I don’t think I’ll ever sell.
Holding them side by side the L6 looks higher quality and “better”. Most could not tell me why, just that they liked the L6 looks better. I think it is because it flows better and doesn’t look like a hammer with a massive head stuck on the end of a stick. Plus the ano on the S70 looks and feels cheap in comparison to the L6.
Once I turned them on it was all about the tint and lack of donut hole on the L6. The Neutral tint of the L6 is so much nicer to look at, particularly when you have them side by side outside.
Indoors the tint is better but what really stands out is the donut hole. Basically there was no area where people preferred the S70 cosmetically or performance.
The indicator LED is nice but at the time I showed people the lights my S70 still had the stock gray switch cover which hid the indicator.
Plus anytime a light was needed with this kind of power I noticed it was either the L6 or my 8k lumen SRK that got snapped up. The S70 seemed to always remain on the shelf until the other were taken.
You also think the BLF GT V.45 looks bad, your vote doesn’t count
Looks are a personal thing, everyone I have shown it to firmly felt that the L6 looked better with very little thought needing to go into it.
Performance wise it was even less of a consideration, outside it was instantaneous when I showed then the S70 and then the L6 it was a cry of Oh my gosh, this one is so much better! The tint simply works in the outsdoors where the S70 washes everything out.
Don’t get me wrong, the S70 is a great light with nothing “wrong” with it (well besides the donut hole). It is simply surpassed by the L6.
hmm, it is personal preference
if talking about “premium look and feel” of anodisation, please compare it to premium lights, really like to know what lights have the same premium ano look and feel as the L6
Thanks for the explanation.
So the tint of the S70 is too cold and it isn’t focussed like the L6.
Is it moddable / adaptable to have it without a donut hole? (with different centring gaskets etc)
I’m with Jerommel on looks. I love the aesthetics of the L6 blocked battery tube, but the head just looks too “busy” to me (specifically the bezel ring). I like how the S70 widens then goes to a smooth flat section before the bezel, and I always prefer a smooth bezel vs crenelated. That said I have an L2, and I think it does look better in person than it does in pictures.
Both tint and the donut hole were fixed in my S70 when I shaved the emitter, so I kind of forgot it was ever a problem
I still don’t get how the S70 handled the heat so well? I watched how the Lux plummeted on my light meter, then I found out why! And there was a nice little point from the turning process that left the mcpcb sitting up off this holey thermal bottle neck of a shelf!
Isn’t it a wonder the light never got hot? :person_facepalming:
But it got fixed, modded and it got hot! Then I gave it to my brother! :+1:
Oh wow! Glad you posted that. Now I understand why my solder-blobbed, spring-bypassed S70 doesn’t get hot!! Looks like I’ve got some work to do this weekend. BTW, what is that you have crammed down the holes in the shelf?
I hope Thorfire makes a version 2 of the S70. In fairness the S70 did come out first ages before the L6 and Thorfire didn’t have a whole forum on there side helping them and they still made a great flashlight. Some companies that frequent here always get our help and still can not make a flashlight that works! I will not mention any names i seem to always have a run in with them lol!
I would love to see a clear version of the S70 and a SMO reflector. Power wise the S70 stock does a little better then the L6 but you can not notice it by sight also the S70 comes with better accessories.
I think as companies both Thorfire and Convoy have good morels and are good towards us we support them and they support us!
