Costco Eneloops

It looks like they’re finally selling them without the charger that few of us need. Even better, they separated AA’s & AAA’s. I believe the 10 pack of AA’s was $20, which is even better than AmazonBasics AA’s.

I saw them at one of the San Francisco Costco’s…$19.99 for the 10 pack.

Should have snapped a picture. I have to check it out next time I’m at Costco.

I saw the multipack for $29.99 at my local Costco here in Miami and they did have the 10 AA pack and the AAA pack, but I wasn’t too concerned with them.

Chris

Forgot to mention that they were marked as Panasonic’s that retained 70% of their charge after 10 years (at least I think it was 10). I’m going to the SF downtown Costco this weekend so I’ll see if they have them at that store.

The Brookfield Connecticut Costco has them on the shelf as well, —- if your in the area , AA’s and AAA’s for $20.
I keep an eye on these, every few weeks Costco offers a $6 coupon for the multi pack with charger. Perhaps after the new year a coupon to clear the AA’s and AAA’s out.
Never can tell with Costco some products are a one time offering.

If they offer that coupon, it’ll be difficult for me not to buy every one possible. I also want them to put those led tube lights on sale again, both the tube replacements and the fixtures. My garage needs much more light.

I am outside of the USA. Do they sell online at the same discount scheme? If so, a link would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

The last time I was on the Costco website the eneloop package with charger was available to members only.
A discount was offered to members online but then shipping chargers eliminated the savings!

I did read the individual cells though the blister package “Made in Japan” and Panasonic were printed on each cell. The cells have a silver color wrapper.

Those are the latest Generation 5s and should have been made last June/July (2016,) making them the latest production batch to make it into America.

I’m still on my first batch of Gen. 2s and Glitters, bought almost 5 years ago, but I like the fact that we no longer have to buy a charger with the batteries, since I have a bunch of top shelf chargers here already.

My latest batch has been the Fujitsu standard Gen. 4s and the hi-cap 2500mAhs, both made at the FDK plant in Takasaki, Japan, which is where Eneloops are also made.

Fujitsu owns FDK, the technology and patents behind the Eneloop LSD NiMH batteries, in case people didn’t know. Eneloop is just a name brand own solely by Panasonic.

I basically buy by price.

I’ve been buying Energizer Recharge 2000mah from Amazon.
$16 for an 8 pack. Free shipping with Prime.

According to at least this website they are slightly better* than Eneloops
(*initial capacity, capacity after four dozen charges, self-discharge, and high-drain) ,
and cheaper.

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-rechargeable-batteries/

Actually, the Energizer 2300mAh in silver mylar foil with medium (not lime) green accents are Made In Japan and most probably from the FDK plant.

I was using them going back to the early 2000s and have gone through 5-6 quads of AAs and half that for AAAs. I’m charging up a quad that are dated 2010 and they’re still close to that 2300mAh.

Those are the good Energizers. Some of the newer ones are labeled ‘Made In China’ and might not fair so well. There’s 1500mAh, 2000mAh and I think even 2500mAh.

The 2300s are top notch batteries and have a greenish fiber washer at the positive end.

Nothing is better than FDK made LSD batteries and Fujitsu NiMH AA/AAAs and Made In Japan Eneloops are guaranteed to be manufactured in that plant. Everything else is just speculation and conjecture.

Chris

Fwiw the website I linked tested the Energizer 2000mah extensively for initial capacity, capacity after four dozen charges, self-discharge, and high-drain and concludes that they best the 2000mah Eneloops by a small amount at a 25% savings.

I’ve never used the 2300mah but they are widely reported on CPF and elsewhere to have excessive self discharge.

I can’t pull your blog post up.

Here’s HKJ’s testing of the Energizer HSD 2000mAh AAs. Mine look just like those, but have green fiberboard washers vs. black, they state 2300mAh and say Made In Japan. The 2000s do test out well in HKJ’s brief testing.

I’m all over CPF and you might see one/two people who have supposedly had issues with the 2300s.

The 2300s are actually a low self discharge battery. Since there are so many variations, people get things confused.

I’ve read of people saying this and that, over the years on CPF, but I’ve actually been testing them out on chargers like my Maha C9000, LC BC-700 and Opus BT-3400 and they’re a very good, long-lived cell with a typical capacity between the Eneloop Standards and the XX/Pros.

All the other Energizer variations, I can’t speak to, as I don’t buy them.

This is just my experience based off of useage going back to 2002ish. Heck…I even use my AA quads bought back around then, in my low drain remotes and I charge them back up once a year with no problems.

Remember, the poorer batteries will still work well in the beginning, but quickly develop higher internal resistances, so that’s where the predominate problem lies. 48 cycles is nothing compared to a Gen. 2 (1500 cycles,) Gen. 3 (1800,) Gen. 4 (2100) and Gen. 5 (2100)

Here are a couple of informal tests/observations I’ve done on LSD batteries:

I’ve been buying these 2300mAh Energizer’s at Walmart for 7 bucks a pack. Says “Made in Japan” on the back of the package.

Costco Canada sells them online. Costco.ca, and search for eneloop. They were on sale for $12 off a couple of weeks ago, but they’re back up to $56.99 for 16xAA or $38.99 for 12xAAA. At the regular price, I’d only buy them if I have an immediate need for them. But they go on sale about once a year, and I always order them when they do so I have lots in stock.

Oh yeah, you probably have to be a Costco member in Canada, but I’m not positive on that.

How do you tell generation 4 apart from generation 5? The ones I ordered this year have date codes that vary from April 2016 up to August 2016. They appear to look the same as the generation 4’s I bought last year and the year before that.

The only difference seems to be what is says on the box: 70% charge after 10 years. I think it used to be 5 years on the gen 4’s. But is that just marketing?

They’re all made in Japan. I was starting to get concerned that Costco might start getting the Chinese Eneloops, but it’s good they’re still carrying the Japanese ones.

Those are what I use, albeit different packaging, but it’s been 6-7 years since I got my last three quads.

Note that they say pre-charged, so they’re a low self discharge offering (LSD.) The 2000mAh Chinese Energizers referenced by the guy above, aren’t precharged, at least in HKJ’s sample, so they are HSD batteries that do offer a bit more capacity.

Remember, you can have LSD properties and long cycle life, or you can have higher capacities and fewer cycles, but you really can’t have both, so pick your poison.

I started out 5 years back with some AccuPower 2900mAh AAs, AccuPower 1200 AAAs and finally some Sanyo 2700 AAs and all of them gave me more capacity—a lot more, than the Gen. 2 Eneloops at the time, but all discharged more rapidly and all of them—24 different batteries, are long dead in the grave.

My Gen. 2 Eneloops, all bought at the same time are still kickin’ along, with only minimal loss in capacities, both AA and AAAs.

Chris

You mean these?

http://www.costco.com/4’-Linkable-LED-Shop-Light-with-Pull-Chain,–2-pack.product.100284402.html

Don’t know if the singles are still on sale but I picked up 5 at $19.99 each about 2 weeks ago.

That’s one heck of a deal!

They might have been 7.69 or 7.95, but still a good deal. I know they sell out fast because they almost never seem to have them in stock. The AAA Energizer rechargeables were all gone. Duracell AAA pre-charged rechargeables are like 11 bucks for a 4 pack and there wasn’t many of those left either.
