LOL! I'm not great, but I can already solder. I worked for a sound company for a couple years. Did lots of XLR jacks and cables. As far as light related soldering goes, I've repaired a Pelican M6 LED (a friend gave it to me because it was broken) and installed led strips on top of the bottom chord of the trusses in my living room! So I guess I'm off to a good start. :P
Ah yes, audio cables.
I did lots of those too. 
I liked the (older generation) Neutriks a lot:
Yeah, I mostly used the newer Neutriks, the ones with the wavy design in the plastic.
