Found a cave, or sort of cave

Since we moved here we hear stories of a near tunnel/cave system.

A little downstream the river turns right and the left bank turns into a steep hill.

In this hill the caves/tunnels should be.

We sometimes use the little boat ton the river and further downstream it is possible to get on the left bank so we have searched for the entrance that should be there, yet did not find it.

There have been some serious windy days and I am cleaning the river and saw something. No leaves yet.

So we just went there and indeed an entrance maybe 150 meters away from our house

It looks man made in an arch shape

We heard it was closed off 40 years ago (apparently the system runs all the way to the Castle.

We just had a Sunwayman with us, and I crawled in it (there is only 1 meter height) but couldn’t see passed a corner.

This sounds like an interesting thing to check out better tomorrow.

this thread suffers from a CHRONIC lack of even a “teaser” photo would have been appropriate, lol…

Hahaha lol, I am think my wife took a pic or two will see if I can edit it in

Found a pic.

Edit- idiom maybe - are said to be very long.

Nice Henk :+1:

Very interesting. Clearly there is a lot of history in those caves. It would be interesting to run a metal detector in there. You might find some interesting items.

I hope that you will post more photos in the future

Bob

I see they even had their handy TrustFire lights with them back in those days, NICE!

The Miller, in your neck of the woods there seems to be high concentrations of air in places where one might expect rock. As a matter of fact: even some parts of the almost 1,000 yr. old castle you mentioned are said to be slip sliding away. Therefore I urge you to follow the words of dr. Ruth, who knows quite a bit about cavities: “always wear protection”.

Because you do not want to end up like this

Did not click but,

Touche!

Pics, The Miller… Pics!

Yes
Nice pic Henk4U2!
Yeah one can visit the castle and my son and a friend “discovered” small steep stairs on the lower floor going way down (there was illumination so open for public) to a cave like system as seen on the pic.
There was a way to get to the cave near us and the family La Rochefoucauld has stepped in over the ages, bought the mill, restored it and kept it working. The other mills in their village were not treated like this, only the millstream and a stone reminds of the existence of the most upstream mill for example. wonder if it was kept as safety retreat or something.

left up, I saw the flat rock formation standing in the river, lots of trees have blown over and no leaves so first time I saw it.
right up, after conquering brambles, dead trees, thorny bushes we saw this, an arch, looks very man made
left down, me to give an idea of size of the opening, only work shoes and old clothes on, so did not want to go further
right down, not much to see. it goes down and in a bend.

It should have been closed many years ago, maybe erosion and the many years have washed out the top of the dirt they put in there.

I am a bit worried about animals, last summer i walked on the other river bank and nearly stepped on a rather big snake that very relaxed slithered away. Those kind of animals must have a place to stay in winter and I don’t feel like disturbing a snake being between it and the way out. But well, old clothes (hoodies and caps, hard helmet for son, thick gloves), flashlights, water, a shovel, and telling the neighbors to get some help if we are not back in 3 hours looks logical, maybe there is nothing to discover and is it closed, it is just too cool not to examine
ah wait, daylight shows me a sky with heavy clouds, only in cal weather I will go there

Well that was well hidden. The history if known would be fascinating. Nice find Miller.

Fun read! Thanks for the pics.

Bring some rope, water, and a bite or three.

yes might it be possible to go deeper, rope seems smart, I have this nice paracord with reflective wires woven in, that should help getting us back to the entrance in case it is a maz down there. heavy clouds are gone but rain predicted so not likely we go today.

Beware of wild beasties
Looks like you need a snake light like they use in sewer pipes //A long flexable cable with a camera and light attached . That way if a friendly (unfriendly) animal attacks it just bites the camera instead of you.

hmm, I do have a little waterproof cam with light attached to a 25m USB cable I use to inset chimney, pipes and stuff like that.
Using that actually is a good idea!
Ill just bring a pipe to slide it through or do as with the chmney use the cleaning rods to push it.
This is just the push I needed to see if i can get that cam to work on a phone and not just a notebook.

I like the fluorescent rope idea to get out of the maze, and watch out for those mythological creatures :smiling_imp:

Nah the cam doesn’t work on a phone. So we have to take a notebook with us
