Review : ThruNite Mini TN30 (3x XM-L2 version , 4x 18650)

Flashlight has 3x XM-L2 emitters with OP reflectors (special designed triple reflector). It has also AR coated glass :

It changes modes through the e-switch . Note also the little led in the center of the switch , which works as a battery indicator :

Flashlight uses a battery carrier , that carries 4x 18650 batteries :

Flashlight’s Holster :

Holster is designed for mini TN30 , flashlight fits very nice! I really like when companies give a nice holster . :

How it works (&modes) :

Flashlight has 5 modes : Moonlight , Low , Medium , High , Turbo + a hidden Strobe mode

Flashlight uses the e-switch at the side for on/off and mode change functions .

Operation :

Turn on /off
Press the side switch to turn the light on/off.

Change modes
When the light is on, long press the side switch to cycle through Low, Medium and High.

Shortcut to Firefly(Moonlight) : When the light is off, long press the side switch to get Firefly mode.

Double click to turn to Turbo from any mode. Another double click to get Strobe.

Memory function
The light will turn on in the last mode accessed, except for Firefly, Turbo and Strobe.

Battery Indicator :

In all modes except fmoonlight , the led in the e-switch indicates the % battery capacity :

When Blue light is ON , battery has capacity >20% :

When Red light is on , battery is running low (around 3-3.2 Volts , after 2 hours in turbo) :

When Red light is flashing , means batteries need charging and flashlight can’t turn on :

Lumens on different modes :

  • Moonlight - 1 lumen
  • Low - 45,47 lumens
  • Medium - 373,96 lumens
  • High - 1737,7 lumens
  • Turbo - 3378 lumens

My test , with thermal data :

Turbo mode :

A very good runtime , providing 60% (1750 lumens) for about 2 hours !

Medium mode runs stable for more than 3 hours , producing 1737 lumens .

Conclusion :

A great “soda can” style light , with more than 3000 lumens output in turbo and offers a great variety of modes . Runtimes are good in every mode , even on Turbo . Flashlight’s quality is superb , without any machining marks or weaks spots on the anodization . Battery indicator feature is a nice addition , even though i would like another “warning” somewhere in the 3.5-3.8V range .

Seriously… why should I still resist? This light is amazing… top notch quality for 100 bucks. Why pay more? The DT70 can be bought these days for 160 bucks with 4 good batteries… but what’s the point if the light falls apart in your hands?
What’s the voltage when the LVP kicks in and you get the blinking red light without the main leds switching on? Thanks for the review!

But I shall point some things :

The battery carrier is for 4 batteries 18650 not 3 , as stated in the specification, and I do think that is a 2S2P one , not 4S , but maybe I'm wrong , unless they are using a 16V driver and 3 leds in series .., strange configuration...! . Is not easy to pair 4 batteries...!

I forgot to mention it in the review , i had it in my notes . Flashlight can’t turn on when voltage is below 2.85 Volts (per battery) , around 11,4-11,5 on the battery carrier .

I don’t own a Dt70 , but i dontdon’t think it can succeed such a nice throw/flood combination .

Battery carrier is 4S for sure , measured with my DMM , and can be easily seen in the 2 contact plates. I don’t know about the LED connection , could be series or parallel .

Aha, thanks! Some time ago I picked up my old SkyRay King when I was using the M43 pretty much all the time (very comparable beam profile I think, King and mini TN30), and noticed it actually throws well. Decent throw at much lower lumen ratings, i.e. the light runs cooler. Definitely a useful beam profile…

Took the beamshots , and now charging cells to measure the intensity .

42000cd, was that right? I’ve looked at this light a few times and thought it was less than that.

Only thing that’s stopped me buying so far is the hope it won’t be long until the Q8 is ready.

I haven’t measured yet , because i have to measure outside , but i think it is a little less ( 37kcd ? ) .
