Review - Thorfire PF01S

Disclosure

I was asked by Thorfire if I would like to review the PF01S for posting on Budget Light Forum. I said yes and as they haven’t asked for it’s return I think that I am meant to keep it. If this is not so then they can send a postage paid packet and they can have it back.
There are plenty of other reviews but this is my take on matters.
The photos are from the Thorfire website.

As ready to go powered by a single AAA cell the weight is 43g or 1.5oz.

The three available power settings are 0.5lm - 50lm - 120lm for my use 0.5lm was useless and the difference between 50lm and 120lm was not really detectable, this could be due to my 60+years old mk1 human eyeball sensor.

The last mode memory was a feature that others of this price range seem to miss out on, very useful.
I didn’t much like the sloppy feeling rubber cover on the tailswitch.

There was no provision for a lanyard or keyring and as this is primarily an EDC light then I would expect one. The pocket clip is a decent design and is reversible.

Overall the look and feel of the light is good, the reflector (orange peel) looks good quality, the Cree XPG2 LED correctly centred and after a touch of silicone grease the threads on the tailswitch were smooth.

This is a very competitive sector of the market, around £12 in the UK and about the same in $ in the USA, no bad thing for buyers and I’m not sure that I would buy this offering.

For me the pros were the quality of the anodizing and last mode memory with no strobes etc. the let downs - the sloppy tailswitch boot and the oddly spaced modes, might just be a glitch with mine but low was very low and the other two levels not evenly spaced. The lack of a place for a keyring mounting or lanyard attachment is really missing a trick.

As this is not exactly a glowing review I asked the Thorfire rep if they still wanted me to post the review and they answered correctly -
You can post the review. It takes your time to test it and we would respect your work.
In addition, We are not asking for a false perfect review. If you think our products are pretty good, then we are very happy to satisfy you. If not, we still have room to improve, you can directly tell me where we need to change. We also appreciate that.

Refreshing attitude in this day and age.

If this breaks any site rules then I apologize, please feel free to bin it.

Thanks for the review 8steve88.

The last memory mode is a nice feature for a AAA flashlight, and so is the tail switch.

But for a small AAA flashlight, it’s hard to beat the tint of a Nichia 219B that comes with the Astrolux A01, which also costs less.

The Thorfire PF01S does come with a versatile clip that can come in handy though.

Thanks for the review.

What about runtimes?
No tailstand ability for this light?

Nice review of a nice light!
Thanks

Hi all, good to be back. I might be a bit on and off as I am thinking of swapping broadband providers.
Agent Steel, no tailstand as the switch rubber protrudes about 5mm proud of the body. A short length of tight fitting plastic tubing 15mm internal diameter would be good as I get a reading of 15.3/15.4 mm as outside diameter of the tailswitch. You’d only need about 13mm or half an inch.
I didn’t do any runtimes but it would depend on the mode (obviously) as well as the battery brand and type. Eneloop for rechargeables, Duracell for throw-aways etc. giving better times than low budget alternatives, usually that is, some are better or worse than others. I am using Duracell Industrial cells at the moment as they seem to have replaced Duracell Procell. The tint isn’t terrible - not a warm tint but the length of time I use these small torches is usually short so it’s less important.

Sorry to say this isn’t my favorite light nor would it be my first choice if I was buying one. No keyring or lanyard hole kill it for me. Just last week I bought two small torches both at under £10, a Nitecore Tube and a Nebo Lil Larry - a COB with high-low-red strobe with no mode memory. Magnetic base as well as head and tail standing (side emitter) pocket clip as well. The Tube is one of my favorite keyring lights being rechargeable from a USB port and small enough to be comfortable in your pocket.

The high points of the Thorfire for me are the high quality of the anodizing and the last mode memory plus the pocket clip is able to be placed so the lens is up or down, not sure why but it is.

Nice review, Thanks!
