I think The Miller made a good about the difference between an affiliate linker bumping his own thread with new deals in new posts vs. “organic” bumps by BLFers that are asking questions or whatever.

What stops the thread getting bumped fifty times by others? Edit. When I say bumped I mean a member saying thanks or whatever bumps the sales thread back to the top.

True.
But if people are genuinely using his links its deserved. Posting your welcome to each on the hour, not so much.
Tough call all around. Not easy to Moderate.
I wish I could simply apply an Ignore check mark to some threads. Or only see them on the front page if I have Subscribed to those specific threads in the Commercial spot.

I don’t know how programmable the forum is, but if it were possible, how about if there was a “Non-Commercial sales/Affiliate Links Recent Posts” button under the “Recent Posts” button? Just a thought.

Is it possible for individual users to filter out other users so we don’t see their posts?

We already had that, unfortunately that feature disappeared. I really liked that.

I believe I disabled it after the big site upgrade a while back, for some reason I couldn’t get it to work. But now I am please to announce….

I like the deals. Why don’t we make a sub forum for deals. Possibly even make sub categories for batteries, flashlights etc.. it would make life a lot easier when looking for something specific than having to ask for deals on threads or searching the entire forum.

Is there a way to make a thread accessible to only the op with one or two updates per day? Doesn’t need to be hardwared but if exceeded subject to Angry of DM. Basically the same rules governing polite behavior all of us are supposed to follow. Questions can still be answered via pm so that those don’t bump the threads.

The cutthroat competitiveness is definitely noticeable.

the had his exclusive BLF 348 groupbuys for years and recently I noticed that while “the’s” groupbuy is still going on, there are others using boiler room tactics and undercutting his price.

I think a little Ethics 101 wouldn’t hurt.

Healthy competition is great but you don’t have to become the next Ricky Roma from Glengarry glen ross to be successful.

when i first got here and started posting as a newb?

we had a “affiliate link” flame war going on… i got here late on it, and when i unknowingly resurrected a flame-war thread that was mercifully dying down? it “ignited” people on BOTH sides to ask me what i thought… heck… i try to be “principled’, and so i replied after asking what an aff link WAS?

was told, and i said :well then, i guess i dont like the idea of someone posting “deals” only to be making commission…

then everyone went ape$h!t… the word “shill” was thrown around a lot…LOL

old lumens PMed me and cussed me out, and told me “i wouldnt last long here!” of all things…

========================

the whole “shill thing” slowly died away… NOW we have ‘this’ controversy going on, rules are being made, admin will see if it works…

geez, its ALWAYS some periodic controversy… and its ALWAYS centered around “commercialism”…

a year or 18 months from now? it will be “this” again, or? “something new”… but it wont be that new, it will be SOMETHING surrounding something commercial…

====================================

its a little like “election season craziness” on my site i run… except its not electionism, its somethign else here… same thing in the end, though… just another headache for the guy in charge is all…

With enough black coffee and cigarettes? all things are possible…

I am currently still shipping… REAL GENUINE CREE xp-g emitters, the classic… brace yourself? as low as 20 cents apiece!! Check out the SALES THREAD, everyone is happy… then PM me

SALES THREAD:
http://budgetlightforum.com/node/52528

if you are into reloading? this is my site… I inherited the remains of what was once arguably the best reloading site on the internet… its the “BLF” of reloading sites…

http://reloadbench.freeforums.net/

if you think night vision would be cool? It IS… this site i am a member of, and its basically the “BLF” of home made scratch-built digital night vision. They are at the leading forefront of advanced DIY for digital night vision, and thats gun mounted or handheld… builds rival and exceed commercial offerings…

Ugghhh, indeed they are annoying. They don’t seem to be bots, at least not to complete the registration steps, because my CAPTCHA is too zany for a bot to figure out.

I find them funny actually, really like it when members post the filthy kitchens in replies.
Your registration steps are fine.
Thanks for keeping this place Real!

The new main page is what BLF used to be ….

Sing to the tune of ‘Yesterday’ by The Beatles

Yesterday …I could see new flashlights everyday
Now they only post if it will pay
Oh I remember yesterday

Gradually , this place wasn’t what it used to be
Shilling posts expanded rapidly
Oh I miss the fun and purity

Did it have to change , I don’t know , it went astray
It’s become so wrong now I long for yesterday

Yesterday …we were on a hobbyist pathway
Now I need to bring joy to my day

Oh , I believe we’ve found a way

Thanks SB, IMHO that new Recent Post selection you added in the top right of the home page is a great solution to this issue.

I could never figure out where those threads were coming from. I could understand threads on edged weapons (kinda go hand in hand with flashlights), but kitchens??

Thank you, sir! I personally don’t mind the commercial links. I got some great deals there, but great to have the option!

Can I ask you one more request? As most members, I often enter BLF with mobile device. Im not sure that this problem exist with PC, doesnt matter. When page is loading, one from ad banners adresses some slow server and loading longer that whole page. When it is loaded, page is scrolled down by 1-2 lines. How does it works: Im entering forum, page is loaded, finger is going to the target link, and at this moment this f###ing banner is loaded and whole page is scrolled and I pass other link that I need. I return back and this banner is not saved so it will take a time before itll be loaded and this repietes once again as many times as I go through different threads. Im almost sure it doesnt depends from device, browser, net provider, destination country and etc. Im far from net technologies and dont know how to make it better but hope you will find the way to fix it. Thank you.

I know there’s a link at the top of the page for the “Non-Commercial Recent Posts” page. But, how about a way to change user preferences for the “Home” page? I’m so accustomed to just hitting the “Home” button to get back to the front page. And, there are “Home” page buttons at the top and bottom of each page, so it really is the most convenient way to get there. If the “Home” page could be switched to the page of the user’s choice, that would be nice, especially now that we have TWO “Recent Posts” pages.

Reason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it. Do not count on them. Leave them alone.
