Greetings

Hello flashlight people i am a simple pallet producing person who has gotten a slight interest in lights i have next to no idea what im doing when it comes to electronic devices and i have come seeking assitance i recently acquired a 6 c cell maglite sadly it has a corroded battery i will need to remove im hoping some one here may be able to assist me with what i presume may or may not be a delicate labour intensive procedure any thoughts and comments greatly appreciated c:

Well, if the light itself isn’t too damaged by the battery, is there anything else you’re looking to do with it, or were you planning to just use it as-is?

I was hoping to convert it to led with a conversion kit but im not sure if id be better off replacing the entire switch system instead of just a drop in led im also not sure what modifications would be beneficial as i understand its a glorified bat c: but id love to make it more efficient

Welcome to BLF! Many here also started with “a slight interest in lights”.

I’m guessing you mean one of the battery terminal is corroded. It might just need to be scraped and cleaned. A picture would help understand what needs to be done.

Not sure how to upload photos as far as i understand a battery has bloated and leaked inside the light i have acces to terminal cleaners and basic hand tools to assist in the removal of the tail cap sorry for the un clarification c:

Not sure if that worked is there anything you specificaly need a picture of ?

Please enjoy your time here, PalletPal!

If the batteries are still in there, you’re gonna have to drill them out. Yeah, I speak from experience. Then the appropriately-sized pipe-cleaner (not the small fuzzy ones, but the cylindrical wire-brushes to literally clean the inside of heat-exchanger pipes.

It’s a chore.

Maybe contact Mag and see if the light’s covered by their lifetime warranty?

But when you’re done, Mag sells the appropriately-sized LED replacement “bulbs”. Nothing to jump up and down about, but they work and give you great runtime.

I use one in a 2×D Maglite (shelf queen; too pretty to go scraping concrete with), and one in a 2×AA rubberised Taskforce light.

Welcome to BLF!

Here is the second pict you posted:

Any picture that may help understand the issue…
Can you unscrew the battery tube and see what’s inside… Is the tail cap damaged? or the head part?

Maglites have been modded around here for years. But the “C” size isn’t really messed with much. However, if you search through the old mod threads for “D” cell Maglites, most of the work will be the same. There’s a specific way that the Maglite switch assembly and bulb socket area all comes apart. A 6-cell Maglite will still work well with LED using the alkaline cells, if you get the right driver. So, there’s no need to convert anything for Li-Ion cells. I don’t recommend the “LED upgrade” bulbs that are sold at retail. They’re not worth the money, IMHO.

My personal recommendation, if you want the maximum effect for minimum mod complexity, is to use the CREE XPL HI with a buck driver to step down the voltage. Start a new thread for the mod process, and post pictures of each step along the way, starting with a picture of the corrosion. That way, any time you get stumped, someone will be able to help you know what to do next.

If you do want to get into more complex modding, and you have a bit of mechanical aptitude, there are some other cool things you could do, like cut out a section of the tube for a shorter light, or bore out the tube for Li-Ion 26650 cells to fit inside. If you cut it AND bore it, you can make a single-cell “shorty” which is really cool looking. Just look around, like I said, and decide what you want to do, and we can help you get there.

Thank you all for the greetings and advice i will post my adventure in another part of the forum also the tail cap is siezed on from what i assume is the battery corrosion but im confident with enough elbow greese and other solvents it should open also from what i tried googling they no longer make the 6 c cell battery flashlight is there any where i can search the serial number ?

First off, welcome.

Now that you have it this far apart, the next thing to do (from memory) is a circlip that you should be able to see from the head end. Circlip pliers, pointy needle nose or careful maneuvers with an awl will get that out.

Next get your allen wrench set. The switch has a hole through it into which you put an allen wrench (I have NO IDEA what size, or even metric or imperial, just keep trying till one feels right). Loosen the set screw and the switch assembly will get loose and allow you to slide it out the head side.

A strap wrench or carefully padded vice or pliers to twist off the tail cap is next.

Once that is done, you may have to DRIVE out the swollen batteries. Hammer, broomstick, vice, padding - no fun.

I have a few 3D Maglights. I don’t even use them anymore, the new 18650 lights kill them for performance. As I absorb more info around here, I will try my hand at converting them.

Good luck.

If you need a light and considering how old and damaged this 6C ML is, maybe you should just buy a modern light?

If you don’t want to get involved with Li-Ion batteries and a special charger there are many USB rechargeable lights that are as easy to charge up as a cell phone.

Now, i can also understand that you actually want to repair this light.

If you mail the light to Maglite, they can open it for you but since you’re in Canada the postage wouldn’t be worth it, even for the trade-in program. Once the compartment is open, you’ll need to either drill the batteries out or first you can try knocking the light on a piece of wood.

Honestly wanting to repair or salvage the light for the novelty of putting it on my night stand from tapping it it feels like only 1/2 batteries bloated the rest rattle in the tube hopefully tommorow i will have a chance to attempt to open the light got the end cap off theres a spare bulb that looks good battery was in the wrong direction tried using a screw didnt work tried a bigger screw still no dice will resort to needle nose this evening will also be starting a new thread on the mod side of the forum thank you everybody c:
