Review Maxtoch (XHP 70.2) Shooter 2X.....newest version

This is the Maxtoch Shooter 2X newest version with XHP 70.2 emitter. This light was sent for my review and NO other compensation other than keeping the light.
The light can be found at……..
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/MAXTOCH-Shooter-2X-XHP70-2-vers...

The Shooter 2X XHP-70.2 is the newest if the Maxtoch 2X series of light. It is designed more for general purpose , search and rescue , camping and such type environments than the original 2X was with its massive downrange throw.

The new 2X is top notch quality from end to end and both on the inside and outside. . When I took this light from the package and inspected it very carefully , I could not find any thin or bare spots anywhere on the anodizing , the AR lens and the reflector were totally dust free and clear as could be. The Threads are just silky smooth on the sample I received and were lubed just right. There are also double O-ring seals at the tail end to help with waterproofing. All of the contact points (contact or ground rings) on the MCPCB and driver and the springs on the driver and tail switch are gold plated and there are NO sharp edges anywhere that I can find on the light.

The main business of the light there is the tried and proven Maxtoch DTP copper board that the XHP-70.2 emitter sits on for a great thermal path. That emitter is driven by the Maxtoch Buck driver which has also served well for the lights it has been used in from the past , but the driver in the newest versions is upgraded and should be of even better quality.
This new version is also pretty light weight for the size of light it is really , weighing in at only 317 grams without the cells. This means NO shoulder straps or big bulky handles are needed to carry the light fairly comfortably for a long period.

This new 2X is not what I would classify as a thrower light , but it is not all flood either. There is s good balance of both throw and flood with the XHP 70.2 emitter and smooth reflector , as it is set up in this light , does a pretty good job getting down range to see well , but at the same time it illuminates a pretty large area also. The beam in the new 2X , is a more defined beam than something like the Convoy L6 has , with the Orange Peel reflector in it , and at the same time is no so defined or as tight of a beam as a dedicated thrower. The dark spot or “X” that is seen with the original XHP 70 emitter in a smooth reflector is almost unnoticeable with regular use of the new 2X . When I say regular use , I mean if you shine it on a white wall at close distance , then yes you will see somewhat of a dark spot , but not nearly like the original XHP 70 in a smooth reflector.

The working order of the modes on the new 2X are….. Turbo / High / Medium / Low (NO blinkies) and after 3 or 4 seconds the light memorizes the last used mode and turns back on in that mode next time. The switch is a forward clicky , or as many call them a “tactical” switch , meaning you also have the momentary on in any mode with a half press of the switch button. The half press is also used to change modes and then a full depression of the switch until it clicks to lock in that mode , or constant on and a simple click to turn the light off.

The new 2X is powered by two 20700 cells or with the included adapter ring , 18650 cells can also be used to power the light.
The new 2X will run in the Turbo mode constantly with NO step down needed and will hold full brightness until the cells are depleted , at which time the Low Voltage Protection will turn the light off. The light will get fairly hot in stagnant air (no airflow) but does handle the heat pretty well with moderate to good air flow and does not get real hot when you have air flow of some type over the light.

As for the output and the only run time test I have done so far with this light , Maxtoch seems to have the Turbo and High modes listed a little low and the Medium and Low are fairly close to my readings as shown in the charts below………

Overall for the purpose this light was designed for , I have NO complaints and I think Maxtoch has made another great light with the newest 2X XHP 70.2 version.

For those who do not want to watch the whole video , the teardown and still beamshots start at 9:37 in the video timeline and the outside live footage comparing the Convoy L6 starts at 14:32 of the video timeline.

Video followed by the listed specs…………..

Thanks MG…….

Yes I think for an all around light the 2X XHP 70.2 could be of interest to Fire , Police , S&R and others to have both the coverage , or flood and some decent throw in combination.

Nice review! I’m yet to watch the video, but did you take any lux readings? I like the L6 a lot and was looking for something that could match the performance and being less bulky/heavy.

Also, is the tint uniform on the spot/spill? I have seen several XHP lights with yellow spot and CW spill, and the tint on the L6 is very evenly with no shift at any mode.

It is great that they have opted for 20700, I don’t see any reason to go with skinny cells in a long light.

No Josie …….. it is not suitable for diving.
I tested the 2X before in water with 2 different ones for up to 7 hours with NO leaks , but I would not recommend trying to use them for diving as they are rated at !PX8 water resistant.

I only did the lumens readings actually.
The Hotspot is not like the L6 and others have with the OP reflector. The 2X has the more defined hotspot with the outer spill area more like a thrower , but at the same time it has a much broader beam than a true thrower light does.

The beam is fairly even across with a pure white light and the spill area is the same color as the brighter hotspot. There is no orangeish or yellowish anywhere , just the defined edges around that very large hotspot.

The XHP 70.2 looks nothing like the original XHP 70 does in a smooth reflector I guess is what I am getting at. (at least not in this reflector of the new 2X)

Great review David, Looks like I’m late again looking at dates of your OP but does seem like a much better light for police etc then the last effort.
I’m very relieved to see the date you were last here, you have weighed heavily on my mind over the last couple weeks, couldn’t recall your precise location,
Anyhow very happy to know you were spared..
I’m wondering if Amanda’s discount offer is still good from our April or so conversation, and I did catch your comment about DTP, but no pics? Are you sure? Hahahaha, never mind
Funny thing about this light is that after she asked me about ideas for a new light all I said was they didn’t really need to design a completely new light IMO, just wait for the XHP70.2, find a reliable driver vendor and use the 2X host and a slightly customized stock reflector and well look what you get, it looks really great spec wise,
Another really nice review, just like always,
Thank you Mr Robo

Nice! Thanks for the great review.
I like how it can hold turbo without stepping down.
I’ve got the earlier XHP70 version and you’re right. Massive dark cross in the hotspot.
Did you do the turbo runtime test with airflow or no airflow?

Nice job! Thank you for yet Another fine review robo!

Just wondering since they are using a buck driver at a some what conservative out put, (as if over 4000 lumen is conservative, but the 70.2 has been measured at 8,800-9000 lumen @ around 18amps FETDD driven) what is the current draw at the tail cap?

Also since the 21700’s have come out recently what is the I.D. of the battery tube? Wondering if the possibility of boring the tube out to accept 21700 is also possible. I have both 21700’s and 20700’s so it would be nice to run both.

Again thanks for the time you invest into your reviews, I really enjoy them! Thumbs Up

Hello everyone , sorry for my somewhat slow response here. I have been a little under the weather and haven’t even been online (or out of bed much at all) to do anything the last 2 days.

I appreciate the compliments from all and as always glad to do the review (s).

First T18 // Thanks for thinking about me in the bad times. Although we had 14 inches of rain here in total from the storm , we didn’t get the massive flooding like many places 60 miles or more to our south. (I am about 120 to 130 miles from the gulf as the crow flies) We had some creeks and rivers that got out pretty bad but mostly in unpopulated or scarcely populated areas.

Yea I am sure the MCPCB is DTP , although I did screw up and never took a picture of it up close as I had planned to do. I don’t have a clue about the discount you are referring to , as to how long that might be available.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Second Box // I did have a little bit of airflow on the 2X when I did the runtime test as it does get pretty hot without any airflow at all. I was inside , so there was pretty much zero air movement. I used a 6 inch desk fan on low setting about 16 to 18 inches away to simulate a light breeze basically. When outside with a light breeze or a wind , the 2X should be fine to run the full duration on the Turbo mode though without getting just super hot.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Third KawiBoy // The 2X was made as light and as lean as possible to begin with for the original version with the dedomed XM-L2 U4 1A , the Red and Green versions , the OP With XHP 70 ,and now this version. None of them have super thick walls on the tubes really with the thickest out of all the five 2X’s I have , being only 2.04 mm on the tube walls at the tail threads.
The ID at the tail thread area on this particular light is 20.76 mm but , the walls are probably a little thin to try and bore out for the 21700 and have much of anything left , as they are only 1.72 mm thick at the tail threads.

I also sent you a PM Kawi.
