S41 - one led only mod

Is it possible to mod Astrolux S41 to only one LED? e.g. this one: http://intl-outdoor.com/noctigon-xp16-v2-mcpcb-nichia-nvsw219ct-r8000-d260-p-907.html. If yes, what optics should I install to complement that kind of mod?

Dimensions of the S41 quad optic :

Why would you replace the quad MCPCB with a single one ? As it is, the driver is not meant to drive only one nichia 219C.
You’d better reflow 4 nichia 219C on your stock MCPCB.

The driver will drive one led fine, it is the BLF-A6 driver that is even designed for a one led flashlight (the BLF-A6).

But an optic for one led that has the same diameter as the quad will always (?) be deeper so you do not have the space for that.

An option is using no optic, so built as a mule.

OK, my mistake.

Not with a reflector but with a TIR optic that has the same height, the top diameter would probably might be smaller and would need some sort of centering ring.

It was just an idea. Was searching on www.ledsupply.com and www.led-tech.de, seems that there are no replacement for 22x6.7mm optics, even for 4 leds. I think that stock optic on S41 is a waaay worse than the one on D4. It’s kind of out of focus. So just was thinking, what if…

The S41 optic is pretty nice actually (optically that is, the design with only 2 legs is a failure for flashlight use) but they do not manage to get the leds in the correct position. You could try to get the leds closer to the optic (if that is what is needed) somehow.

And a triple or quad with carclo ?
20mm in diameter for the optic and for the total height it will depend also on the MCPCB thickness. Most probably not a direct and simple swap.
Jaxman (aliexpress) is selling is own triple MCPCB with TIR optic. Have no idea about exact dimensions, still waiting for mine to arrive for another host.

Lots of plastic aspheric lenses have, say, a 20mm convex part but 1mm-2mm of a flat “ledge” around it that can be trimmed down nicely. Just pick one to fit, find a spacer to just keep it off the LED domes.

I was gonna do that to a Minimag in hopes of not having to drill down into the head as deep, but didn’t get to it yet.

I was thinking the same thing while reading. Great minds think alike. Or is that alike names think great? It’s good either way.

Aspheric with maybe 1/3 focus would give a nice even flood beam for closeup work. More than 1/2- 2/3 focus and the beam starts to square out too much.

Or both?

Wait… the same about the Minimag, or the aspheric for his light, or both?

I always liked zoomies only when in full-flood mode. Too much light wasted in anything but. So the idea of a floody Minimag was to me a winner. Think I wanna stick in a 5D for a nice warm(er) light. Sometimes you just need a nice even floody light for walking down a path, making sure you don’t slip on ice, looking in dark cupboards, etc. All flood, no throw. And not as spread-thin like a mule.

Depends what you want to use it for. A mule is way too spread out, but as part of my TIR rampage I replaced the stock TIR in my RJ02 headlamp, to a wider (60°?) TIR, and it’s much better for close-in work. No more having to aim my head like an owl just to put the spot on what I’m doing, as a wider beam covers more. For just walking around or for close-in work, I’m betting a 90 or even 120 would be sweet.

For caving or something, yeah, narrower/throwier would be better. But as a GP headlamp, wide is nice. And if I can’t get a “fixed-zoomie”(??) with a nice wide-angle aspheric, I might as well fudge it with a wide-angle TIR.

LB, where did you get a tir for the boruit? Is it standard size. I can measure myself so no need to go check or anything:)

LR, yes the Boruit uses standard 20mm optics that you can find cheap all over the place, super easy to swap. I have several.

OP, another option is to swap the 4x219b that come in the S41 for a triple 219c from KaiDomain. With a thick 24mm O-ring it fits great. I just repaired three S41 that had busted LEDs using this approach. It’s more cost effective and the 3x219c outperforms the 4x219b.

Yep, standard 20mm TIR. Amazon, then either led world or uxcell (preserving case on both as-is). Or goggle “20mm collimator lens”, which at least gets you in the ballpark. Might still have to look at those “other people also ordered…” sliders to find other types.

Problem is you get ’em either nekkid (no holder), with a holder for XM-sized chips (rare, think only one type that I saw), or holders for those “bead”-type LEDs. Fwiw, led world also has assloads of different types in that style, the whole spectrum from IR through VIS into UV, as well as other colors like pink, white, etc.

4-6bux for a 20-pak of TIRs, depending which ones you get.

The Boruit’s TIR has a slight groove on its face around the periphery so it seats inside the screw-cap that retains it, but a regular 20mm TIR fits fine, no centering problems at all. All I need is the nerve to reflow a NW emitter on it, and it’d be perfect.

All my TIRs, the markings on the baggie telling which type (angle) all wore off, so I was doing trial’n’error. Keep that in mind if you get multiple types, and mark ’em accordingly. I gotta go see all those types I ordered, and match ’em with what I got.

Got alot of tirs from fasttech.
Just ordered 1 of each to play around and see what worked.

Managed to jam one down a s2+ with a xhp50.2
Was probably 21mm or so from the start.

Lb, FYI, if you want to reflow that LED on the Boruit, you may want to get friendly with a hot air reflow. The PCB that the LED is mounted to is dual sided and has components on the back so you can’t reflow using a hotplate, and even using an iron on the backside is awkward/slightly difficult and I was afraid I was going to lose a component. I did the first one that way, but used hot air for subsequent ones to reflow from the top, and it was much easier.

That’s exactly it. I saw the teardown and dual-sided board, and didn’t want components on the other side to go dropping off like dead bugs.

With my luck…

Maybe you should replace your 4x optic. The astrolux optic on mine is has a really nice beam. Smoother and less artifacts than carclo optics and certainly than the kaidomain 3x optic that I have in my s41s.

You can order replacement at banggood:

Will this be OK? Optic will fit into S41?

Yes it will. You only have to make up for some height difference. You can put a copper shim under the mcpcb or just an o-ring between the optic and the glass lens

Thank you all for help. I placed the order
