c8 XPl-HI beam profile vs...

Hi forum. I am a bit of a light newb though enjoy moderate throwers. I wondered what the hotspot and spill is like for this light? Current duty light is an Armytek predator V 2.5 with 670 lumens and 35000CD, XP-G2. I love the beam profile at 5 degrees spot and 40 degree spill which throws but some useful light to the side.

Obviously the C8 kicks the pants off it for range which I why I am looking to get it… but wondered how the degree spread is with the XPL-HI? Is the effect a real pencil like effect or some spill occuring to the side at medium ranges? Sorry for the inexpert terminology. I am in a country where it costs a bit even to ship budget lights so trying to get an idea of it before purchase. I may get it modded in the US in advance and wondering if a XMl2 is a better idea right off the bat…

You’ll see some excellent examples of the beam profile in this awesome video review by our very own resident

You could try both XP-L Hi and XM-L2 C8’s from Simon, and still be less than half the price of the Armytek. You can also get them both with Bistro firmware if you request it, or just order the clear one and it will be already set up.

Thanks folks, that vid answers about 150% of the questions I had. Should be required viewing for newbs! I’ll take up no more of your bandwidth on this.

The XP-L HI C8 has a wider spill. I find the very narrow spill of my XP-L HI Predator produces a bit of a keyhole effect.

A Predator at close range has a pronounced keyhole effect:

At a distance the keyhole effect is less pronounced:

But a compared to the “conventional” beam below the Predator is narrow:

Note the last image is a Convoy XP-L HI M1 — not a C8 — so the spill in that image is slightly brighter than a C8 but the coverage is the same as a C8. A C8 would put a much more concentrated and intense spot on that barn than either of the other two lights.

Nice vid! Never saw that one before…
