Protected Samsung ICR18650-28A problems

I bought 4 of these, but one wouldn’t charge and kept going open circuit, the others charge fine on my normal chargers, but have less than 2400mAh capacity.

The first battery had a faulty protection circuit. I took it off and it is charging fine.

Checking out the ICR18650-28A review shows that these batteries should be charged to 4.3v, not the normal 4.2v. So its likely this is why the capacity is lower than expected.

The only charger I have that will charge over 4.2v is a Lii-100, with a 4.35v option. I tried this, but it looks like the protection circuit kicks in.

Should these be OK at 4.35v?
Can anyone recommend a basic charger with the 4.3v option?

I believe that you will need a hobby charger of some sort in order to specify a 4.3V charge. I would not charge them to 4.35V. Fortunately, it sounds like the protection circuit prevents this anyway.

Personally, I would probably just deal with charging them to 4.2V at a lower capacity. 2400mAh on a 2800mAh battery is not the end of the world and your batteries will have a longer life charged like this. Some may consider this a benefit.

My hobby charger has only 4.1v and 4.2v, perhaps its time for an up-grade. I bought the 2800mAh so I’d get better run time in some lights I’ll be leaving in the stables and cars.

I’ll have a play with the Lii-100 later, perhaps I can drop the 4.35v a little.
