Alright, lets see what it looks like!
So, typical Olight box. Good stats on the back.
box_frontbox_back

Notice the yellow plastic cover? Remove the battery protection tab and basic how to change from standard to tactical mode.
basicsbox_inside1

The light is a very attractive light, pretty typical of Olight. It is fairly long, not crazy about that. It has a very good solid pocket clip and a blue bezel with mild crenelations. Notice the tail switch??? This tail switch serves many purposes, depending upon mode group selected. In standard mode a half press gets momentary turbo and full press locks turbo. In tactical mode a half press gets turbo and a full press get strobe.
frontrear

The LED? XHP35-HD in neutral white! Well centered within an orange peel reflector.
led

It is a big light, this is an 18650 Zebralight for comparison. Maybe an unfair comparison since the Zebra does not have a tail switch and is one of the most compact 18650 lights out there, I will add a couple more for comparison.
size

Lets look at the tail cap in more detail. This tail cap is also the interface to the normal Olight magnetic charging system. There appears to possibly be some electronics in the tail cap, but not 100% certain of that. The center and the outside silver ring to appear to expose battery voltage. I am not sure if it is a direct path to the battery or if there is something that eliminates the possibility of a full current short. I am trying to figure out how to test that in a non-distructive manner. Maybe a light gauge wire that will act as a fuse if there is full current. Also notice that batt+ goes toward the tail cap of the light! I did a reversed battery test with no ill effects. It also works fine with any 18650 that I placed into it!
tailcaptailcap_inside

On to the battery tube. I noticed right away that the battery tube is sleeved. I was not able to test current draw, because I was not able to jumper and activate turbo. I will try this again. I assume that this is so there will be a current path to the tail switch when the side switch is off. Also, notice the very well machined square threads at the tail! They should last forever. Also note the light has 2 springs on the batt+ to carry more current without failing. There are also dual springs in the head.
tube_endthreads

This light comes with a few extras such as a “High Drain” protected 3500mAh cell, magnetic USB charging cable (750mAh), basic lanyard and a really nice holster! The battery is very long, any cell you own should fit and work. This light will charge any 18650 internally as well. The Samsung 30Q flat top worked very well in the light. Please keep in mind that Olight does recommend a protected cell with this light.
batt_sizeholster_sidekit1

At this point, I wanted everyone to see this light and start forming their own opinions. This review is far from completed, but I really did not want to sit on this new one. This light really is a deviation from the standard Olight EDC fare. I will update with beam shots and my thoughts after I get to carry it for a little while. It just arrived today and the battery is not even full, yes… I did play with it without topping off the battery! It is very bright and the neutral white looks pretty good. Can’t do beam shots tonight, it is raining. Sad I also have some more testing to do and I found something of a surprise with this light and will update in the coming days. Beam shots likely this weekend, to many other lights in town and to many neighbors to aggravate!

Thanks for looking!
Matt

UI is very Olight with regards to the side switch… Tail switch is a little different. Step down is at 3 minutes, but it can be bumped back up.

Did Olight include a tail switch memory mode in the version you reviewed? Or does the tail switch only let you turn on the light in turbo / strobe?
Seems Olight had a prototype version that had a memory mode for the tail switch… but the other info I’ve seen says the memory mode did not make it to the final production model.

The tail switch is only on or off or momentary. The light does have memory and does remember moonlight mode!

You can test the tailcap current safely by using a protected battery with over current protection below your DMM’s max current and then shorting the contacts with your meter. Only a couple milliamps flow, so the M2R is safe.

Can you pass the word to olightstore.com to fix their reflector info? They say it’s smooth, but your pics show orange peel.

Does the memory work with the tail switch? Or does the tail switch only turn the light on in turbo?

3 minutes is pretty good considering the output!

No tail switch memory, turbo or strobe only. I am fine with that in this design and for the stated purpose.

I am interested in that option as well and have already asked the Olight rep I work with about that option. Will update when I have an answer.

The charger seems to terminate at a proper voltage and only charges at a max of 750mAh. I think it would be fine for any cell, but bear in mind Olight does strongly suggest a protected cell. Given that the included cell is rated for 3500mAh, unless you deplete the first cell there should be plenty of capacity if you manage the recharge after use. I will be doing a cell test in my Lii500, likely this weekend so I do not have to leave the unit unattended.

One more thing to note… the tail switch does not override electronic lockout! I really wish it did, this might be considered a flaw in a tactical light!

Sure is! It would be like a gun without ammo, when you may really need it. Though I can understand not wanting accidental discharges as well. Lighting yourself up at the wrong moment could/would be bad.

Deputy Dog, I have also decided that it is a flaw. This light will end up on an AR or a 10/22, in either case I want to know it will always turn on. I do not think that this was a good choice since the likelyhood of pocket pressing the large tail switch is likely, even less likely would be locking it on in a pocket. Maybe in a a pack with a bunch of loose crap, but the switch is not that easy to engage. I just got the light yesterday and wanted to get some info up, today is my first day of using it as an EDC, something I always do before I can honestly finish a review. I like to carry any new light for a week and really put good sound observations into my reviews.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Can you establish if the inner tube is ground or not? I can see where it’d be tricky to get a tail current reading, with the e-switch, but is the body ground or positive? The cell goes in backwards, right? Curious, the many differences this light has over a standard light.

Hey, I was able to determing that the batt+ spring and the main tube are connected when the button in the tail cap is pressed. So, it appears to be body tube positive.

Also!!! Copper DTP star! I will not tear it down any further, this is actually a nice light that could you a couple of minor things to be a great light. I am going to carry it this week and will update the review after a week or so of carry. The star appears to be glued in place.

I had mine apart to do some amperage readings for my review I am working on……the MCPCB in my sample has regular white thermal paste under it and with a side to side wiggle it popped right up when the tension was disturbed from the slight suction under it.

Like many of you, I am a NON-tactical user. I am not an LEO, Fire, security, etc.. Just a regular ordinary guy wanting a nice double e-switch light. I would love to see Olight add firmware to select between Tactical (instant turbo at tailcap switch) and mundane Civilian (memory mode at tailcap switch or better yet, same UI as side switch).

cncyana, that what you wish for may already be present to some degree, there is an option to change interface actions but it remains to be seen whether it suits your purpose or not. I have it on good faith that the beam profile and extended reach is quite nice. Wink

I assume you are talking about something more than picking between momentary/constant turbo and turbo/strobe at the tailcap?

More UI flexibility should be more than possible now with better chips to handle and store the extra firmware. The next version of the upcoming Zebralight SC600 is supposedly going to have several UI groups to pick from.

As I look through the comments on the various forums and even Olight’s website, I see several folks saying the lack of flexibility of the tail switch UI is keeping them from buying this light. It’s surprising that none of the reviews I’ve read seem to think this is a limitation.
If Olight put in a secret mode that enables the light be configured to allow the tailcap to control something other than full blast or strobe, I would think it would be in their best interest (increased sales) to let folks know about it.

I think things like UI flexibility will likely be seen in newer S, R and SR series lights, whenever they come out.

In my review, I do not see it as a problem since the light has a tactical design. The idea is one thing, a very simple method of access to something very bright or very blinky. This light is not designed to be an S30R with a tail switch. This light is meant to be either an off hand pistol light or a rifle mounted tactical light. The tactical use is considerably different than the typical EDC use. I do suspect that we may see this physical interface appear in other platforms. It also appears that a remote tactical switch will be out for this light, Olight has not confirmed when it will be out yet.

The only “bug” I have really found so far is that the tail switch does not override electronic lockout. I think this is somewhat serious in this platform. Use in a holster or pack would suggest that one locks out the light, but in a situation requiring quick access to the light… one would have to hold the side switch first to unlock the light before it could be used tactically.

I noticed you didn’t say much about the bezel. I really like the aggressive design of my M18 striker (the M1X striker has the same one). I wonder why they went away from that with this light, I could understand the M1R with milder crenelations, but, the length of this light almost demands it to be a more aggressive tool.

Your thoughts?

I am not sure where their thoughts are with that bezel. It looks nice, but is very mild. Personally I am not a fan of the uber defensive bezel designs, I like the more conservative Solarforce style designs. I am kinda glad they chose it since more aggressive crenelations would have increased the lights length. This is a handful light, if it were rolled in the hand and used for mass during defense it would make a dent!

I am EDC’ing it this week and trying to figure out what I really think of it. I do like it, it is a big first step toward an EDC tactical light for them. I have emailed a few of my thoughts to them and I hope to get some responses back before I finalize the review. I want to get some night shots, but have been suckered into helping with Homecoming this weekend and it looks like rain at night. I do not get out of town at night to remote locations to test lights except on the weekends and this one looks shot. May have to update with everything except beam shots this weekend. BTW very bright and not a bad beam profile at all. It has a few XHP35 artifacts in the beam, but the OP reflector really cleans it up.
