lights in afternoon semi-darkness

I discovered something yesterday. I was walking the dogs at around 3:30 pm. It was getting a bit dark, especially under the tree canopy, but there was still enough ambient light to easily walk without a light. I clicked on my 1xAA keychain light to be sure it was working before I really needed it, and I noticed that the light's cool white light mixed badly with the remaining ambient light. I don't know how to describe it well, but it made me prefer to have it off. I suppose another factor (maybe the main factor?) was that the light has a small spot, so it gave me tunnel vision. With the light off, no more tunnel vision. I should have brought my Dry: NW tint, plus lots of flood. A tight beam is no good in semi-darkness.
