Hi!

Hi! This forum is super-cool!

Hey Mate, welcome to BLF!!!

Welcome to B :sunglasses: LF !

Hellooooo!

Hi again!

I need some expert’s recommendations :sunglasses:

Which color temperature is the most suitable for outdoor use? I am using an Olight m23 but that xpl tint is damn ugly. Any suggestion? I don’t mind losing some lumens to gain a better tint and higher color rendering.

Thanks!

hi

It’s personal, but generally it’s about 5000K. If you want high CRI, then you can look at lights with Nichia leds, for example Emisar D4, Noctigon M43 or Astrolux MF01.

I was thinking to just swap the led. The m23 is working great, I don’t want to waste money for an extra flashlight… This one is still working.

Nichia has very nice tints. Does the 219C with 90cri can directly be used in the m23?

Thanks for joining the party, SIG!

With a username like that, you really ought to have a signature.

?

SIG is sometimes short for signature.

Or sometimes:

There are several tint available from Nichia, from 2700K to 5700K with high CRI. I am wondering which tint is the most suitable for a thrower like the m23 - mainly for outdoor use.

Technically it can survive if you do it right, but you’re officially loading the led well outside specification. So you need copper DTP board, you need to reflow the led properly, and you need good contact between board ans shelf. Things will turn sour and you’ll fry the led if not done right.
The most logical swap is XP-L HD or HI with lower colour temperature. I thought Luminous had a nice led with low Vf if I’m not mistaken; I’m not much of a modder…

Welcome to BLF SIG! Looks like you’re already getting some great advice.

A lot of it is personal preference, so keep that in mind. Sometimes it’ll take a few lights that you use somewhat regularly to hit on a color that you take to.

For outdoors, and I know I’m gonna get dogpiled on for saying it, but skip the Nichias for über-rendition. They make some beautiful light, but you’ll lose lumens, and they can’t be pushed as hard as more “utilitarian” Crees. A Nichia triple can’t be beat for indoor lights, though.

Anyhoo, 5000K is “neutral”, but I like a bit warmer light, 4500K to 4300K is quite nice. 4000K a little warmer, and also quite nice. Reds and especially browns will “pop” with warmer light.

To me, the usual 6500K light is positively ghastly. The only thing worse is a light (even warmer) that’s tinted green. Hell, even my 5000K EDCed ’502 is looking a little too cool for my taste.

My 3000K SF32W is like a nice bright halogen light, even though in comparison it looks rather “yellow”.

But, if you want something good for outdoor use, get an S2+ with a 4C emitter (~4300K), and drop in a nice 20mm TIR lens in whatever angle you want, from 5° to 60° or so. TIRs will mix the light from the 4C so it won’t be as fried-eggy as with the reflector, and by just swapping out the TIR, you can go from throw to flood and back again.

Shined on something pure-white (styrene-foam cooler or similar), and you’ll see the nice tint. Like warm sunlight, just on the warm side of neutral.

so, if properly re-flown, a nichia 219c can be used in the m23. In fact, my colleagues presented me with a small nitecore nu20-nichia and I really like the tint compare to standard cri.

According to manufacturer , the m23 provides 1020l. How much lumens can be expected from a 219c with a flux of 220? 20-30% less?
