I just opened my newly arrived C8F. Smile It is very nice. Love I have the cell on charge and in an hour will be out for a walk to try it out. I’ve switched it to the mode 3 group for now. Probably leave it there unless it gets modded. The e-switch sold me.

I notice in Amazon, there’s the (older?) Sofirn C8F with triple XP-G3 and it only costs $16.87 (includes an 18650), fewer mode groups
https://www.amazon.com/Sofirn-Flashlight-Rechargeable-Waterproof-Emergen...

and there’s also the Sofirn C8F with triple XP-L (the one mentioned in this message thread), but it has no price indicated since it’s out of stock:
https://www.amazon.com/Sofirn-Flashlight-Resistant-Camping-Rechargeable/...

Though Amazon does not ship to my country…

I can’t seem to find the cheaper Sofirn C8F with 3x XP-G3 with 18650 battery in the AliExpress store, if it’s priced similarly or close ($16.87), I think that’s a nice price.

The Sofirn C8F with 3x XP-L is listed at $34.79 in AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Sofirn-C8F-Triple-Reflector-Tactical-LED-Flashlight-18650-Powerful-2580lm-Flash-light-Torch-3-Cree-XPL/32838919520.html Any discount for this item in AE?

Impressions from an hour and a half hike through the woods; two track and single track dirt. No moon tonight and 3/4 overcast so not much starlight either. I played with the level switching quite a bit for the first few minutes. For my hand I find the side button should be further forward to be used with my thumb. However, the button is well placed for using the pointer finger, light held with the switch facing down.

Level 2 (~80 lumens) was used for most of the walk. Just enough light to keep from tripping over roots and so on. I used level three (600+) lumens on a couple of winding stretches of single track. I sort of wish that level was a little lower, maybe 350 lumens or so.

It did not take too long to get used to the UI. Like anything new it takes a little getting used to. All in all it is a good UI. I consider it to be among one of my favorites. The biggest thing I miss is being able to “back down” the modes like Bistro or ramping Narsil.

I have to admit that I still prefer the ramping operation of Narsil over everything else. However, there is a lot to be said for using other UI. Use of different UI should help keep one’s mind nimble. Smile

I’d like to thank Sofrin for the discount code I used on the Amazon purchase. That made it an extra sweet purchase. Even without the discount this is a fine light!

I too find that using it switch down and with the “trigger finger” makes it more intuitive. And yes, the output level does take a pretty big jump going to the mosfet, we’re spoiled to ToyKeeper mapping all that out for us and also to her reversing UI. Wink

Yes, TK firmware is a (great) spoiler.

I meant to state that I also liked the beam. For my purpose this light has a wide enough spread. Not as even a spread as my X6 with a triple Ledil optic, but not a pencil beam which is almost useless for naviagting through the trees, up and down slopes. The tint is also an excellent choice, a good compromise I think.

The XP-G3 version had the problem that the leds were likely to fail http://budgetlightforum.com/node/56661

Still worth a buy, just for the host + reflector.
Put some 219C in it and you have a very very nice flashlight

Yep, and a 32mm Noctigon fits right in, reflector lines up well. How can you go wrong?

Nice Mr. Vampire, glad you like the light! Smile

That old one doesn’t have a side switch though. Lots of other C8’s with no side switches to choose from too. No others a triple reflector though (that I know of) so that would still be a plus for a modder I guess. …. I sure like side switches tho Smile

I would rather have both tail cap and e-switch, so I could use both to change modes, I still have quite a few LD-2 drivers left to use.

The Convoy C8 battery tube and PB switch works/legos with the C8F.

I know that a Convoy SS bezel doesn’t fit on the C8F, spacing differences.

Great review Dale thank you,
You sold me on another light,
I don’t know if anyone has asked you yet since I didn’t read through all the posts but are you going to flash this light to Narsil or thought about it, is it possible .?
Sort of hooked on that UI lately,
Thanks for the wire info as well, I hadn’t heard of the superworm silicone wire before, took a look at Ebay and that looks to be premium wire for sure.
By the way if making a new set of voltage test leads using this 18ga wire what length would you use for your leads,
I’ve read it before but can’t recall where and really need to make a set, I’m thinking it was something around 12-14”..??
I might not have the correct gauge for test leads either ?
Thanks Dale

There’s no Attiny 85 on the driver so, No. But the driver could be changed.

I have one of lexels 17mm with Narsil that I haven’t used yet. This might be a good place for it. Smile

Can you confirm this for us? I’m thinking of getting the Convoy C8 SS bezel just for the new C8F. This appears to be the older version of the C8F with the SS bezel installed:

There are 2 types of SS bezel!
Old and new – the old one doesn’t fit, the new one does – at least on the “old” C8F (non-Side-Switch)
As you can see on this image – there is a thin gap between Bezel-End and Case – if it bothers you, you can put in a thin O-Ring or use a thinner O-Ring for the Glass.

When I tried the SS bezel on mine (older non-eswitch version) the inside shelf to lens depth was wrong and the lens was loose. Mixing between the companies seemed wrong so I didn’t bother trying to make it work. I can, of course, since I have the lathe, just decided not to.

In a similar way I chose to keep the original driver save for swapping out the MOSFET. Wink

Nice review Dale and great pics! I got my version last week and put a D4 V2 driver in it. Had to alter the lighted e-switch switch, it was making the driver do silly things! Facepalm

Great light, love the ramping!

Hey KB,
What did you alter on the SW and why do you think it causes the wonky driver?
Considering the D4 UI driver too with lighted SW on the C8F and ther lights.
Did you keep the OTC or remove it?

Kept it. Removed the resistors and LED’s, they share a common ground with the switch. Had the Green Led’s working. looked cool behind the smoked button. Driver would just blink and ramping was screwed. Look at the back of the switch, there are only 3 contacts, 2 switch 1 LED.

Just finished the C8F with the D4 style ramping UI. Tried the lighted E-SW with OTC and got wonky double flash and it would only ramp sometimes.
Took out the OTC and it is fine now. I do need to change the resistors to get my white LEDs brighter. Will post back when its completely finished.

Here is the lighted E-SW. Works well, no apparent issues to the D4 UI with OTC removed.
SW Leds are still too bright IMO. And dust in reflector. Need to dim it a bit and a proper cleaning. It was open on the bench too long.

Made a big jump in resistance, from 7.5K to 22K to dim them down. Thanks for the advice gchart, save a ton of hassle.

New 22K

Old 7.5K
