when to cancel a 'I'll take it' and go with #2..

So after going back and forth for a while, and sending my last final 5 days ago, I get an offer 1 dollar under.
I sent him the PP info and said if you pay today I can ship tomorrow. That was at 9am yesterday.
Nothing since. last night, buyer two appeared and is ready to pay…So I sent another PM to buyer 1.
Nothing… Do I wait for 48 hours to pass?
what is considered good etiquette…?

If it is a forum post, I’d make a post in the same thread stating buyer 1 has x amount of time, or you will move to #2

I would send buyer 1 a pm with a comfortable deadline while informing buyer 2 about “that” pm.

There’s a little anecdote that goes.
” A bird in the hand, is worth two in the bush”.
Take avail cash. and move on.

You’ve already given the deadline in that post.
If HE can’t be bothered replying. Well……

You’ve already diddled enough with the chap, time to move on.

Chris

Yeah, best to spell out everything you can, right up front. Eg, “first reasonable offer takes it” vs “best offer”, how long you’d wait before skipping to #2, payment/location restrictions (paypal only, CONUS only, etc.), and so on.

Still, someone who lollygags along and doesn’t answer you for a week or more will get all in a bunch of you skip to #2 anyway. Like everyone’s saying, move on and don’t look back. “Sorry, but you had your chance” should suffice.

But transparency is always best. Best to request a public post of intent, and a PM to work out the details. Avoids nastiness, accusations of behind-the-scenes machinations, etc.

its been PM with buyer, now another guy is texting…

I just spotted this thread and being that I am buyer #2, I decided to chime in. I have been thinking about buying the light for a while, but by the time I finally said that I wanted it the light was already spoken for. I was bummed, but I understood. Justanotherguy gave buyer #1 two days to send funds before he moved on to me. I think he was fair to both of us.

I have a few lights that I plan to sell in the near future. I think that the first “I’ll Take It” with Paypal funds received gets the light is the way to go.

Move on to #2.
Send PM to #1 that it was sold.

I’ve been on the other side of this. Posted interest to a fs thread only to lose hours later to a buyer expressing interest in a pm with no interest expressed in the associated thread. If an offer is made in a post, interest should follow there. A public post of an item for sale should require a similar public expression of interest not allowing circumvention by a back door pm offer.

Buy more lights

Wellp, most times when I see something interesting in a FS thread, it’s hours after and it’s already been spoken for. Recently, I just happened to catch one shortly after being posted, and I “went public” first, might’ve asked if it were still available, don’t recall. Then followed up with a PM.

But yeah, it stinks when you post publicly, then later on, maybe hours later, it’s announced “Sorry, taken already”, and you’re wondering if maybe someone just “outbid” you or whatnot.

Even if everything were legit, that the PM got there first before your public message, it still has the appearance of shadiness. So like with conflict of interest issues, it’s just best up-front to avoid even the appearance of impropriety, not just impropriety itself.

The weird thing here was, nothing ever was spoken in the FS thread buty buyer A…it was all pm , buyer B did a lot of texting……
