Enogear EC21 21700/18650 flashlight

Decided to be the test dummy for this light since I couldn’t find ANY info about it. I’m not going to call this a review but it’s better than nothing!

Enogear Product listing:

The version I ordered:

SST-40-W version:
Max Brigtness: 1800LM 5.2A
Max Lux: 52000CD
Mode: Low 5-Medium50 -High 100%
Current Regulation ; no visable PWM
anti-reverse protection ;
Low-volt protection, Cutoff voltage at 2.9V;
59 degree celsius thermal control protection

I’ll be honest I ordered this light in SST40 just for something different to play with until the new BLF 1S boost drivers come out. I figured since it would be the same footprint as XHP50.2 I would likely swap the driver and LED in the future since it has the beefy 21700 battery. Kind of pricey to use as a host but really there are no other 21700 options out there.

Lets tear this thing down and see how it’s made. It’s very close to a C8 style light with fatter and longer battery tube to support the 21700 battery.

super smooth reflector

double o rings

stiff/thick tail spring, never seen one like this. It’s like a burnt looking copper color. If you didnt press it you might think it was solid copper wire but it does bounce back so who knows what its made of

other tail pieces, if the switch looks huge it’s because it is. it’s a forward clicky switch which is not advertised.

driver, tons-o-7135, certainly regulated output like advertised. the spring is even stiffer than the tail and similar material and thickness

other side, the wires are too short to get a full view without desoldering

LED and star, lots of gold thermal paste. The whole head of the light warms up so I guess the shelf here is decent

here is how they support both 18650 and 21700, with a hard plastic sleeve. the sleeve fits snug inside the battery tube, it wont be moving around

here is how a Samsung 30Q flat top fits

here is how a Vapcell 21700 24A flat top 3750mAh fits

sst40 beam shot, spill is a little blue/purple like most of these emitters I think?

beam shape

hot spots, pretty sure it was this order: D1 XPL-HI 5k, Enogear EC21 SST40, D1S XPL-HI 5k

size comparison. left to right: S2+, D1, M1, M2, C8, Enogear EC21, C8F, D1S

Thoughts:

  • I’m surprised they managed to make 18650 and 21700 work in the same light. Because of this I would probably only recommend 18650 flat, 18650 button, and 21700 flat. I’m not sure why you would want to put a 21700 button top in there but I’m afraid it might crush the button on a long 21700. Either way, dont buy a 21700 button top, why would you anyways!?
  • Forward switch is not my preference and eventually I change all mine to reverse. Personal preference.
  • It just barely cant tail stand. It might be due to the big forward switch. I’m hoping it will after I switch it to reverse but it will be close.
  • Reflector and stainless bezel is super nice. It comes already “foybezeled”! It even came with a spare lens which would be a good candidate for dc-fix if I eventually change to a boosted 50.2
  • Tube seems like a perfect fit for my 21700
  • 22mm driver leaves a lot of future modding space
  • The mode order is not as described on the site. It starts in High, Med, Low. I measured 1600/910/115 so the amperage seems accurate for each mode. My number may be low. It was a shoe box test.
  • The threads are very smooth and well greased. Good retaining rings and nothing is glued down.
  • The light also seems to be sold under the name Nightwatch Superbia NS02 - found on taobao. Enogear did warn me it would be badged differently and asked if that was OK.

Overall this is a very nice light if you are ok with the modes and forward switch. I don’t think any other 21700 light exists at this price point. I purchased it to eventually mod no matter what I thought of it stock. Seems like it will be good for modding too since it has a big driver space, no glue, smooth threads, 21700, spare lens, retaining rings. Maybe we can convince Enogear to do hosts if enough modders are interested?

Nice “test dummy” review contactcr
This seems to be a pretty nice light!
Do you happen to have any outdoor photo to show the beam?
Thanks! :+1:

And I’ll probably try some of Enogear’s smaller lights!
Did you have any issue with the transaction?

I may be able to get a throwy beam shot in a day or two. I think it will be close to a C8 just by comparing the D1 and D1S hotspots. As you probably know the sst40 is a good thrower for a dome on LED.

Jackie Zhang from Enogear was pretty good at responding to emails but it did take a few days to initially ship. Typical 2 week shipping with a working tracking number. Their website doesnt have this info i asked for it.

is that the same brand as ENO?… Eagle nest outfitters? They make hammocks, tarps and various ultra light camping gear.

Negative

Thanks for taking one for the team …we need more crash test dummies …nothing personal :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the review. I hope we’ll see more, cheaper, 21700 hosts soon.

Thanks, looks like a decent light and the beam profile looks like something I could live with. Mating up a 21700 with an SST-40 is a nice fresh approach, careful though, on a good cell the SST-40 can pull well over 9A! (On an FET driver, not on this current limited driver, but chips can be stacked…)

I’ll look into this one, seems pretty well done.

I noticed you mentioned the “BLF 1S boost driver”. Are you refering to Lexels design or is this something different? I have not heard of this.

Yes. Shocki, Lexel, laneoceans, mtnElectronics. So many members making them just need to get our hands on them.

Yes thanks for this review, and for mentioning it in the C8F host thread (how I found this)

I’m really liking this, the price is right and I’ve also wanted to try an SST40, good point about future a mod with xhp50.2

It would have been nice if the head was a few mm wider. Except for the side switch and smaller head, this is about as close as you can get to a “budget” version of an Acebeam L30.

What I like:

  • Starts on high / forward switch - perfect for a tactical light as is.
  • Included 18650 sleeve and spare lens, also great idea about the DC Fix for the spare lens.
  • Beefy springs, looks like the driver spring is pretty stout too. Would be good for recoil as a WML.
  • 22mm driver space
  • SS bezel
  • LVP

Looks like at least 4 more 7135’s topside, not sure what lurks in the shadows. :stuck_out_tongue:

Good point about the spring and recoil paired with forward switch. I suppose for that purpose it’s actually very appropriate.

With the tail spring that thick a bypass may not even be necessary, might not make much difference.

Its not a direct drive light so a bypass wouldnt do as much unless you mod it

True.
As not to appear :person_facepalming: I’ll say I meant modded

.
But joking aside, I can’t help thinking about this light and how much I like what they’ve done.
