Zebralight purchase input.

After getting my Zebralight SC5w MK II I have fell in love with it’s design and quality. I didn’t think I’d like the 4500K tint, but I actually don’t mind it now! This is coming from someone who likes CW.

Now I’m thinking about getting a 18650 powered Zebralight.

I’m torn as to what would be the best bang for my $.

The four lights are: ( I do not include the high CRI versions due to 4000k is simply too yellow to my liking, and want to avoid the hideous green tint.)

SC600w Mk IV XHP 35
SC600w Mk IV HI XHP 35 <— Thinking about this one as it seems like you get the best of both worlds, flood and throw.
SC600w MK IV Plus XHP 50.2 <— This seems like the best option for brute force lumens but they don’t list the run times on zebralight.com
SC64w <— No run times listed.

These lights are expensive but man… they definitely are lights that fit the “You get what you pay for” category. I don’t mind the price. I use to scoff at Zebralight’s prices, but after owning one, I can see why they are priced as such!

I have the sc600 hi and it is very impressive. Many people feel like it is one of the best tints out of the SC 600 series. It has a pretty good punch and a decent amount of flood.

I’ve also owned the last rendition of the SC 600 plus xhp50 version. I thought it was too floody and i didn’t like the tint that much. Also due to the high output the step-down happened way too quickly in that version. I’m not sure if the latest rendition is better.

I do get decent run times and pretty high sustained output from my sc600 hi version. Most people that have the hi version love it.

Thank you for the input, makes it a lot easier to narrow down my choices! Is your SC600 a 4500k tint ot 4200k tint? Hopefully it is no lower than 4500k. I was looking at a YouTube video and it was showing 4200k for the HI version. A SC600w MK IV was compared to the SC5w (4500k) in the video. On Zebra’s web page it shows the SC600w MK IV @ 4500k.

Yes, it’s 4500k and quite nice. Very consistent tint from hot spot to corona. Very useful all around beam. Good run times. A definite winner!

The SC64w will clip into the corner of your pocket and you won’t even know it’s there.
The clip is screwed on and slightly smaller body make it a great EDC.

I thought about that one too. How’s the overall heat sinking on that SC64w? I would assume it would step down faster for being a smaller light?

plus one

if you like the UI this is a great 18650 light for pocket carry.

what are your goals? light related of course.

I’m still sporting an SC62d, it only has 300 lumens output so I can’t offer any firsthand info.
If 1000+ lumens is a level you would access regularly, and for extended periods, then the larger one might work better for you.

Recently got a sweet used SC32 from a BLF member and wanted to offer a couple observations:
*The “cool” tint of modern lights is nothing like we used to suffer with. All of the CRI tables and comparisons are great info and can help someone make an educated buying decision, but I also don’t like some of the extra yellow at 4000k and I’m not using any light for inspecting Rembrants. As long as I can tell the difference between some twisted pairs or it doesn’t make it look like I’m in a funhouse then I’m fine with tints above 5000k. It also has a lot to do with the environment you’ll be using it in mainly.
*The silver, more rounded clip has good retention and slips over your pocket seam easier than the new black clips with 3 holes.
The new clip offers better retention but more resistance when putting it away and pulling it out, if you use it a lot there may be wear issues on your pants.

Well I guess it seems I have enough flooders right now Marauder x7/MF-01. I guess I need some throw. EDC has been covered with buying the SC5w MK II already. My current 18650 EDC is a Jaxman E2L triple TIR @ 900 lumens. It can maintain 900 lumens with no stepdown. Looking to fill that gap. I was hoping the Wuben T046R would be the replacement but now I’m not so sure. I’ve recently learned that T046R can only output 1300 lumens for 1 minute and then step down to 600 lumens. Seems kinda lame.

agree with bansuri again. If your wanting to hold higher levels longer you will need a bigger light.

I wouldn’t think any of the Zebras as throwers. I don’t see any beam distance numbers on there website.

SC600w Mk IV HI XHP 35 ???

Edit. I believe a light of this size with this emitter will get what throw it has from its output.

I’d say you have a winner. If it meets your needs.

If its not what you want, they are easy to sell.

I think he said it was good to 100 meters, but not as much throw as C8

I am not sure of how much throw you need. Looks like you have a C8 already

I got the models mixed up, It’s not much different than the MK III.

The source for the range was this post. I corrected it at 230m. Not sure why I said 275m. have another light on the brain I guess.

Order it all ready. Cash

I’ve done my best to convince you its what you want. I don’t really care for ZL’s

But is seams like its the light you NEED. The light you MUST HAVE.

I love Zebralight and have been using them since their first AA headlamp, however, since this is BLF I have to mention a light I got recently that seems like a light I’ll never get rid of.
Jetbeam Jet-IIM TAC. I got it for $25 or so from one of our BLF deal posts and couldn’t be happier.
I have an old Fenix TK20 that’s starting to show its age and I haven’t been able to open it to swap the emitter so I wanted a backup for when I destroy it trying.
The Jetbeam has a nice finish, captured clip, great throw, has HI and a programmable 2nd level that is accessed by twisting the head, rugged build, and 1/3 the cost.
Just had to throw that out there. Not trying to derail your buying choice!

Regarding the lights you’re thinking about: I don’t think any of them are dedicated throwers but the big boys can reach pretty far just by the brute force of high output.

bansuri — I thought of suggesting other lights. I just had the feeling he needed Pushed, not turned.

I also had the H50.

I have SC5w II and SC600w HI IV

both lights are nice, the SC600w isn’t much bigger than the SC5W

The tint of the SC5W is warmer, and has tint shift through the beam. The SC600W has the same tint in every part of the beam and it’s also a little cooler but still neutral.

I think you will like the SC600W HI

Zebras are fun. Here are some of my more recent ones:

  • SC64w – Nice tint, long runtime, very small and fits into the pocket nicely. My EDC for the last month.
  • SC600w IV Plus – great feel in hand. Nice grip. Excellent 2300 lumen output. Maintains high brightness much better than a D4. A little wide for EDC pocket carry. Wider spot than the III HI and much brighter spill.
  • SC6000w III HI – decent throw…. throws better than my other Zebras. However, unless you actually need extra throw I don’t think I’d recommend this one. For up-close use which is mostly what I use my EDC for, the intense hotspot is distracting. The beam pattern from other 2 lights is much better for up close.

If you’re looking for a light for general up-close EDC use get the 64w or 6000w IV Plus. If you want some throw get the 600 HI. If your primary goal is long-range viewing, get an Emisar D1, Emisar D1S or customize a zoomie for throw.

I have both the SC600Fd III Plus, and the SC600w III HI. The SC600Fd III uses a XHP50 that doesn’t have the tint shift of the 50.2. Really like them both

I really like my SC600w MkIV HI for outdoor use. It throws quite well for a small light, and is a great all-purpose outdoor light. But as others have said, the hotspot is a little small for close-up use.

For EDC, I much prefer one of my smaller AA Zebra’s, such as an SC52w/53w. SC5w is also okay, but it’s a little larger, and less floody than the smaller 52/53. I prefer the SC52w, since it can take a 14500 for 500 lumen output, while being smaller than the SC5w (which can do 500 lumens on an Eneloop). The SC53 is newer, but can’t take a 14500 so has lower output.
