convoy s2+ issue

Ok I’m having a weird problem with my s2+. Last night it got stuck in 100% all the time. I normally keep it in mode 10 (1% 10% 35% 100%) with memory turned off. I didn’t worry about it too much until today because I didn’t remember what mode I liked and the paperwork was at home. Now I can’t access the mode selection. I short tap all day long and it never stops turning on, just can’t get in to change it. I’ve put fresh batteries in it, let it sit for a few hours without a battery, but the same issue.

If it makes any difference it has XPL HI U6-4C 4200-4500K with 7135*8 output current 2800mA in desert tan with biscotti firmware. I got it in march and has never even been wet.

Any ideas?

Did you mod the light or changed / “messed up” with the driver?

I once soldered a driver in a bad way so it happened that the contacts (driver, retaining ring, pill, solder) were messed up and the light only turned ON on max, like yours. I had to unsolder and put the thing back together again to make it work right.

I’ve had the same issue. See if it works with the reflector removed. Might be a short on the led solder to the reflector.

Don’t run it too long, just real quick to see if you can get through the modes. You won’t have good heat transfer without the downward pressure.

I haven’t even cracked this one open yet. It’s bone stock as sent to me. I was just using it under a truck hood to remove a hose. Was holding it in my hand the entire time so it never got hot.

Just don’t know.

Did you try tightening the tail or head?

Took it completely apart this evening, cleaned everything, and applied noalox to any bare aluminum threads. Still same condition.

Edited to add I did not de-solder anything. Figured if I do have to contact Simon it’s best I ain’t buggered with anything like that.

Sounds like the off time capacitor is loose or defective.

That’s not gonna be anything I can see or touch up without un-soldering the driver right?

I don’t know where it is on those drivers. If it’s on the spring side you should be able to access it. The old Star drivers had them on spring side, but I don’t know with newer ones. If you can post a clear photo of the spring side driver close up I should be able to see if there at least is a cap on that side.

All I see on the spring side is 4 of the 7135’s. Guessing the other 4 are on the other side with all the other parts. I messaged Simon on his store page and see what his reply it before I start tearing into it.

I noticed the reminder to make sure to exit the set up mode after setting the mode choice so you don’t wear out the driver . I know how to enter … but not how you exit since I don’t have one of these drivers yet .

Once it flashes on the mode you want you turn it off. That both selects the mode and exits.

I changed mine about 3 times the whole time I owned it (since march). Wasn’t even changing it while it messed up but surely I didn’t burn it out doing it too often.

I’m pretty sure these don’t have an OTC. Biscotti relies on the mem-decay trick to detect short vs long presses.

I understand it doesn’t appear to be recognizing the short presses, but perhaps try to get it into programming mode and re-select your mode group?

You say 100… does it appear to be the normal 100? As in, it’s not shorted and overheating, smoking, etc, right?

You can short press it all day long and it will never do the “buzz” (supposed to be after 10 short clicks) to show it’s in mode selection. I tried for 15 minutes last night thinking it might be me not clicking it right but I didn’t have any problems with it before when I changed the modes.

I haven’t left it on long enough to try to overheat it. It still works just one setting. I want to try to get it back going vs cooking it completely.

A few years ago I wouldn’t have thought twice about picking up an iron and cracking it open. The musical meds I was on for the longest until the doctors finally correctly diagnosed me have my nerves so bad I’m doing good to write my initials where somebody can ready it.
