In for half a dozen as long as we’re talking Fenix E01. Not interested in other models/manufacturers.

Also interested in a couple of GIU yuji if that’s possible.

Slow is smooth; smooth is fast.

I’d buy 2-3 or more.

Sure, here’s the link.

Thanks, informative read. Interesting to read what people write about the Fenix E01 modded with Yuji led by Vinhn

“Echoing Scout, these are the cockroaches of the flashlight world. I have 2 of the older E01s that Vinh modded with warm emitters….they are treasures. I keep E01s scattered through the house in the event of a power failure. They just always work. There have been torture threads and 48 hour challenges. They just work. Problem is, even with sanding the lens/reflector, the beam isn’t pretty to look at. Having this little long running cockroach with that beautiful Yuji beam will be the bomb.”

scout24:

Quote:
“Only played in the daylight so far, but it’s LIGHT YEARS beyond stock, and a much better beam than even Vihn’s earlier E01 mod. Smooth, even, no purple anywhere, stellar.”

run4jc:

“It’s shocking how good this thing is. I got only 1 …. may have to order a second. I realize you have no frame of reference for this photo, but I assure you, the colors are as natural as your monitor will allow. The wall is beige and the greens are very realistic. This was in a dark room at a distance of about 2 feet. Just a random iPhone photo. Such an incredible little light. “

skv89:

Quote:
“the YUJI has no hotspot, or basically one large evenly distributed hotspot unlike any others. Very similar to an aspheric lens flood light. It’s a fun little light to play with at night time. I’m planning to start my kids out with this flashlight before I introduce them to my lumen monsters.”

scout24:

Quote:
“Either way, a winner in tint, cri and beam shape. Far more even spill right out to the edge of the beam, and nice and smooth all the way across. Glad Vinh is making these, glad I got in on this run.”

blackbalsam:

“Same here. I love mine.”

I’d like to suggest we focus for the moment on continuing to gauge interest and grow the list you started, then pitch the idea to Fenix.

I think we should save detailed discussion about alternatives until we see if Fenix is responsive, in order to avoid getting derailed or pulled in too many directions at once.

Thanks for this suggestion, I think you are absolutely right.
It is important to explicitly state the focus of this thread.

The focus of this thread is about Plan A:
to gauge interest in a Fenix manufactured E01 with high CRI Yuji 5mm LED. I will update the start post accordingly.
And to create an interest list with as many people as possible.
The next step is to find out the best way to contact Fenix and to nudge them into producing a Yuji E01.
If there is no respons or interest from Fenix, then it is time for plan B.

Plan B: exploring other ways to mass-produce an uber-reliable high CRI Yuji 5mm twisty AAA light
is trying to convince other manufacturers to produce a Fenix E01 clone with high CRI Yuji emitter and fully encapsulated high-quality driver board. And / Or start a collective BLF project to develop such a clone ourselves, and find a manufacturer (Thorfire, Lumintop) to build such a light for us. Discussions about plan B should perhaps take place in another thread.

I also agree that the right order in this case is:
first Plan A,
then Plan B.

I am no electrical engineer, perhaps someone could chime in to explain how to build uber-reliable (flashlight) driver boards. I am certain though that potting by encapsulation makes circuits able to better withstand environmental stress such as vibration, temperature shock, moist.

Only if you pick the right potting and other components. They need to have relatively matched thermal coefficient of expansion for it to work well during thermal shock. Also have to have very good adhesion between potting and PCB. Could make vibration worse, as the added mass will generate higher forces for a given acceleration due to the higher mass. Again proper material choice is key.

[quote] 1. high CRI (Yuji 5 mm led)
2. high reliability (twisty design, potted electronics, single mode, robust 5mm led that does not need a lens)
3. low-price (simple design, cheap 5 mm LED)
4. long runtime on readily available cells (AAA / AA alkaline cells) with battery vampire driver [quote]
add a hat clip and I am in for one. ok, even without the clip, but the clip would greatly increase it usefulness for me. Warm LED for me please.

OK. I’m in.

My first step to recovery will be admitting there is a problem.

… I don’t see a problem.

Let me know if you want a thread started on CPF.

More than 20 units accounted for in a couple days seems promising, but it is worth noting that MOQ on Yuji 5mms is 1000. Probably would need at least a tenth of that to get any manufacturer to take notice.

Hi TheShadowGuy,

Please feel free to start a CPF thread to gauge interest and spread the word. Thumbs Up

For the sake of expectation management:
I have a feeling that the MOQ for Fenix to produce a special high CRI edition of their E01 might be somewhere in the same order as that of directly ordering Yuji 5mm leds.

Perhaps around 500+ orders for Fenix to even start listening to some random internet flashlight nuts…
I presume there is a reason for the fact there has not been a special BLF edition produced by Fenix before.
If the rate of expressed interests for a Yuji E01 continues with the same speed, it is going to take a while before we reach that number. Facepalm

Then again, it’s good to have a dream.
And I still believe the combination of the Fenix E01 with the Yuji 5mm (both the 3200K as well as the 5000K) LED is a match made in heaven. Innocent

CPF thread is up!

@slowtechstef: I noticed Fenix has a specific GB/corporate order form. Might be a place to start if finding a liaison doesn’t pan out. Here’s the link.

Thanks. Just had a look at the Fenix form. Strange: in the “Industry” pull down menu “online flashlight community forum” was not listed as an option. Yet Wink

What I would love most would be a host with 4 of these 5mm emitters, with 2 being 5600k and 2 being 3200k, for a nice floody high cri 4400k beam.

Interesting idea (think Yuji Inova X5), however the focus of this thread is the Yuji Fenix E01 Wink

Perhaps people got confused because Vinhn has his own CPF thread where he sells Yuji E01’s.

Who knows? I even mentioned it and linked to his thread with a message along the lines of ‘Here’s where you can buy something similar and they are great, but factory potting etcetc.’

If I had to guess it’s because we would need a manufacturer/price first. That would make some sense.

At least two people expressed price-conditional interest in the short time it was active, so that’s something.

Here from the other forum as well. In for 2 E01s, maybe more if the price is right. I would prefer higher CCT.

run4jc is a very lucky guy, those are some of his lights. Price is no objection for him, he buys lights that cost hundreds of dollars, each
.

So, for those that want a YujiE01:
For less than US$100 Vinh will gladly sell you Two UNpotted E01 with the Yuji(s) of your choice.
Unit cost is $48 per Yuji

Vinh will also be happy to sell you a FiveYuji light for just $75.

Unit cost is $15 per Yuji

Congrats on your mod Smile

Whatcha gonna do with the other 999 LEDs? LOL

Seriously though, where’d you get the Yuji?

For those of you hoping for a $15 E01 w Yuji, I hope it happens for you.

Update: 31 persons interrested in 56 lights in 4 days.
Hmm… still a way to go until we reach that hypothetical 500 people target list.

For the impatient: like jon_slider said, those who want that *UNpotted *Yuji E01 they can buy one from Vinhn’s shop.
Please do if you want one badly right now. I think it will only wet your appetite for a Fenix produced Yuji E01 Innocent

By the way: Fenix introduced the E01 in April 2008.
Then means 2018 would be a great year to introduce the Fenix E01 special 10 year anniversary edition.
With Yuji high CRI led of course Wink

I think I read in Vinh’s thread that it reduced runtime with the Yuji mod.

The Yuji 5600K looks good too.
