Fun fact:
Osram specs the height of White Flat (both 1 and 2 mm²) as 0.73+-0.07mm.
Boost HX is 0.732+-0.035mm. Halved tolerance?

It's been a year, Osram seems to be really taking its time with this LED.

Another distributor lists Boost HX on their site…MOQ is 4000 and they have no stock.

LED4Power has them in single quantities.

Probably for about five minutes after this comment goes live. I’m half tempted to buy one, but I’d put it in my C8, take some pictures, hate the backscatter from the high CCT, and put the SST-20 back in.

These are Boost HL, not Boost HX. 1mm² die instead of 2mm². Better throw but only marginally for not much more than half output.

I think I read somwhere that Vihn has not been able to get the angry blue tint shift with this led? I might be wrong. I’ll try to remember where is saw this.

That still doesn’t mean direct driving it is a good idea.
It will mainly produce more heat at some point, which is bad for run time and life time of the LED, and cooling can become an issue.
And it’s not as if there aren’t any good FET constant current drivers available.
Convoy has the SST-40 drivers, one does 5000mA and the other does 6000mA, and you can play with the sense resistors if that’s not ideal.
Tests of the Boost HX will determine what’s the best maximum current.

You could look at some data to get an idea what is going on, gives a bit more weight to guesses. If you take the KW CSLPM1-TG as a lower performing Boost HX, I measured its max at 7.5A. Say (this is uncertain of course) that the Boost HX has its max at 10A and the voltage is similar to the KW CSLPM1-TG, at max its voltage is 3.3V. The 30T at 10A is, when it is close to full, 3.9V. That is 0.6V higher, so without any voltage losses in the circuit, the Boost HX would go well over 10A and be seriously overdriven. But place springs, switches, wires and driver circuitry in your electrical path and you get voltage losses, 0.6V is easily lost at 10+ amps.

So, with some assumptions about the Boost HX performance, I think that you can overdrive it but it is a bit of a challenge: the best battery and a low-resistance electrical path.

Oh, that’s more current than i anticipated.
But, i take it you mean 10 Amperes (7.5 A for the KW CSLPM1-TG) is the absolute maximum, and probably only a few % more output than on something like 8 Amperes (say 6 A for the KW CSLPM1-TG)?

But you know i like my LEDs running constant current regulated and the electrical path optimized Smile

I really like FET diy Djozz style driver(nanjg AK 47 one). This is the thread about mentioned driver: http://budgetlightforum.com/node/37987

I produced and potted over 200 of them. Only few failed because of mine soldering mistake so I would say after several years that they have almost 0 failure rate!

I would like that Djozze reinvents mentioned nanjg AK 47 FET Djozz driver but this time with some kind of added resistance so we can safely run that little osrams… Pretty Please Djozz ? Smile

So you want DD with resistance, but not constant current with much less resistance, like the LD25 or the SST-40 Convoy drivers or the LD4 from Led4power.
So you prefer to only have full output with a fully charged cell = for a short while.
That doesn’t make sense to me.

So yes! It does make sense if FET with added resistance would pull no more than lets say 5A… Plus it is cheap and effective.

Why?
It has perfect sense for me. You don’t have to have flashlight pressed on turbo all the time Smile
For example:
Turbo mode 5A, Middle mode 2,5A, low is 1A. You can run it on middle or low mode(saving the battery) and turn turbo for a minute or two when needed.

But even if one wants to run it on turbo only it should not be issue… But FET driver would have to be modded or restricted somehow with added resistance that should not pass 5A.
Since we know that mentioned Osram emitters loose very little on performance and we know how fet driver behaves we could approximately calculate that 4.2-3.3V of battery cell = 5-3.5A current draw on turbo mode which is approximately 30 minutes of turbo mode on 1×18650 Samsung INR 30Q cell by looking HKJ minutes/runtime diagram for Samsung INR30Q cell. Even if it is not in regulation it will still run strongly and one that uses it will not visually notice significant candela/lux intensity change.

I would really like to know how to add and limit resistance on the FET driver. I have very good soldering skills but I can’t do nothing if someone who knows does not show me necessary ingredients of “how to restrict resistance on FET driver”.

The easiest way to reduce current in an FET driver if it is marginally too much is just to reduce the max PWM. This works great for LED’s like the 219C where 100% turbo gives them maybe 25% too much current. Knocking the PWM down to ~75% fixes the issue and works great.

Now if the 100% current is way way too high this might not work of course.
