Vintage 1950s Pifco 'Little Gem'

Found this one on Ebay, I thought it could be an interesting first vintage light.

It's smaller than I imagined, see the AA Eneloop for size reference.

I can't find any reference to it on the web other than a 1950s Pifco brochure

I'm not even too sure which batteries it requires, although a couple of RCR123a would fit nicely. LED mod coming on I think... The paper insert reads 'Remove cardboard cover of Bijou battery and insert cells as indicated'.

Sorry for the crappy pictures, that's down to me using a crappy camera.

Any suggestions on what to do with this? It's surely fate that it takes a couple of lithium batteries perfectly. With that rusty metal sliding switch and metal case, it'll make a good hand grenade when the batteries short out.

That's pretty neat! Looks like you could make a new one from an Altoids tin. Would be cool to see a pic of it next to an Altoids tin for size comparison. :)

I just happen to have an Altoids tin here.

Put in two CR123 primaries and get a 4 cell bulb from your local hardware store and you should be good to go!
Use a little white vinegar to clean up the rust.

That torch is way smaller than I imagined! 8)

The bulb is marked 3.5v....

Cleaned up the contacts and switch, stuck in an RCR123a, little bit of Heath Robinson and off we go!

It lives!

Nice!

I've swapped the RCR123a for a protected 18350, for a little more runtime and peace of mind.

The wife has already nabbed it for her bedside table, only torch I've ever bought she's shown any interest in.

Here are some pics of my Vidor torch, 'empire made' I run it un-modded on a single 18700 protected. First effort here with pics just copied url at photobucket using computer tree symbol here so we'll see what happens!

Unimpressed with the pic effort!

2 x lifepo4 16340's in series and a ROP high bulb. Set the bar for smallest ROP evarrr!!

I have something vaguely similar (bigger, plastic, not antique) and I stuck a maglite led upgrade module in the socket.
