How does LED dedoming work?

Dedoming is a frequently mentioned term,the purpose is to increase light intensity and throw. I can understand that, but why would the output of the emitter decrease, wouldn’t the reduction/removal of the internal optics reduce the light loss?

The dome actually helps with photon extraction. With a dome more photons have the chance to exit on a path near perpendicular to the interface with the air. This minimizes internal reflection.
