Who collects custom and higher end knives?

I like cheap flashlights but I love expensive knives. I dunno, something about a handmade piece of knife art. Anybody else collect custom or midtech knives?

I'm perfectly happy with inexpensive but high quality assisted-openers.

I really don't see the need to spend a fortune on knives.

I wish I could say the same. I don’t really have any inexpensive knives anymore and I’m not a fan of assisted openers. I’ll try to take a picture of my collection

I recently got into knives and realized they are more technical than expected. If you want decent steel, good bearings/washers and no quality issues, you can easily spend a lot of money on a knife. Until know I thought of Ganzo’s as “good enough” for me. But other brands I played with are so much better.

I buy whatever knife I like….from 20-2000.

I’ve only carried customs for about the last 3 years. I love lights (and purchase way more lights than knives) but knives are my true passion.

There’s just something about carying man’s first tool, for the entire history of time we’ve been working together to better the knife, even while on opposing sides of wars and stuff.

I can’t wait to get the 2 custom made damascus karambits I ordered. They are chisel ground, (one for each hand) and now they’re at the leather shop being fitted with custom retention sheaths.

After following a few youtube channels around knife-making, has anyone on here successfully created a knife? Most of the examples are fixed-blade knives and the tools are either affordable or already in my garage. Some models can even be manufactured with hand tools.
Would you guys think that building a knife is possible for a crafty DIY person?
(not sure how folders are made, could be more difficult)

USA, you will still have to heat treat and temper the blade to make it hard.

Yeah , what appeals to me most . Although , I’ve yet to spend 2000.

I have a few high end pieces ($500).

Most are lots less that that though.

The most I would spend on a knife is $50.

I do admire more expensive knives, but I can't justify buying them.

Well I do collect knives - mostly fixed blade hunting knives, and I consider them tools, i.e. paying for good steel/heat treatment/ergonomy, rather than bells&whistles. Still very few of the ones, I have are below $50 - just got picky with the quantity building up and left only the ones, which distinguish from the crowd. What I consider good knife (fixed blade) would cost 100-200$ in US and more in Europe.

I recently picked up a Michael Zieba 1918 Custom Cleaver. That’s the most I ever spent on a knife. I think I want to get one of his pocket folders next.

Speaking of knife art, here are a couple of links:

I’ve seen his stuff firsthand, his skills are amazing.

Steeldog, his folders are very nice.

I have had in the past collected many knives, most expensive was the TGLB and a few other fixed INFI steel blades from Busse Combat, but mostly mid to high end folders from Benchmade, Chris Reeves, Spyderco and so on …none that I actually used, just fondled, carried briefly and/or test cut paper…. for fear of damaging their value or loosing them.:stuck_out_tongue:

But now I am content with just a few, some only valued at $20 for example which fit my needs for EDC without breaking the bank…like Ganzo, Kershaw, CRKT, etc… which wont bother me much if they get lost, broken or stolen.

Inexpensive high quality steel (fixed blade) = spyderco mule team. I didn’t pick the absolute best ones but i’m very happy with my S110V and K390.
I would have liked to try the maxamet.

I mostly collect flashlights… I can’t afford customs knifes… here are my shelf queen microtech OTF knifes… my edc is cheap spyderco pm2.

I hope to get one next year.
