RT70 / RT35 My first mod

Hey guys,

Said hello in flashlight general.

Good to be here.

For my very first mod I got it into my head to play with my Imalent RT70 & RT35, is it worth while or is it a disaster, that's the question.

If the latter, well I've learnt something!

I thought why not try to making a higher output thrower out of the RT70 by transplanting the RT35 reflector in the 70 body.

Ok why not. So disassembled the RT70 and 35, first time taking a flashlight apart. Decided to try my first shave dome on the XHP70.2. (Not brave enough yet to try a dedome) I had a ring magnet which fit over the led great. Perfect height also. I thought the magnet may hold my razor blade close to avoid any height variation, as it turned out I don't think it was such a good idea. The shave went ok but I think the drag created by the magnet prevented a smooth cut tbh. Slight ridges on the surface, I've polished them out ok and now have a shiny smoith surface, approx 0.25mm thick. The polish was awkward, finally managed using some Kemet diamond fluid I have in differing grades, 0.5 micron to finish. Rebuilt the light.

I machined the RT35 reflector, increased appature size, shaved some off the base, some off the reflector cone/centering ring mating surface and off the upper seat to a allow me to move the reflector down moving the led into the reflector more if required.

So that's my first fiddle. .... I'm waiting for some ptfe sheet to make my own centering ring and to better finish, it's black around the led, all I've seen are white, I presume there's a reason? ... Also I think I need to move the reflector up a tad I have a feeling the led is too much into the reflector, just a gut feeling tbh.

I'd appreciate your input/advice. ...

I taken some quick beam shots at different exposure settings. At flashlight low and on turbo. .. The centre spot looks more distinct to the eye, first time taking this type of pic, I'll get the Jack eventually.

Light is about 4' from the wall, please advise on distance. Also wall is magnolia not white so tint won't be accurate. I'll make a white board at some point, matt I suppose?

Complete novice here so I'm not sure of relationship of beam pattern to led/Reflector position etc. ... I've no other light of this size/type at the moment.

Ar. Can't post an image from PC ? .... Need photo bucket or the like, Is that correct?

Ok, can't suss how to insert

I'll do some outdoors beam shots, hoping you may be able to advise on reflector position for best throw?

I guess it depends on reflector design.

It's certainly bleedin bright. I do have a light meter I bought when I first started. I'll dig it out, No doubt I'll need some advice on using it.
