Progress is good. Some thoughts on the SF G2 vs. Klarus P1A

About 15 years ago I bought my first SF, it was a yellow plastic G2 with Incan bulb. It cost $60 and gave 60 mins of light. It had a sloppy tail cap twisty/push button for momentary on. It could not tail stand and would get turned on when stood on the head or in a pocket sometimes. The bulb burned out more than once and it was larger than needed to be. It was 60 lumins as well.
I recently bought a Klarus P1A. It was $30, has 150 lumins for 90 mins or 30 lumins for 28 hrs. Two modes. Waterproof to 6’, shock proof, never burns out a bulb. Has a true clicky. Can tail stand. Uses a single AA. Has a pocket clip. It is well made out of high strength aluminum not plastic and exudes quality.
The difference just a few makes in technology is amazing. I remember when I got the SF and thought how great it was compared to the Maglights I used to have. I can’t wait to see what we will have in another 10-15 years. My guess is smaller, brighter, cheaper and more efficient so the future looks bright!

i just wanted to slap comment something like "yeah dud, i work fa Klarus as well harhar", and now i am realizing that it's you old frien speedsix hehe

Hey, congrats to the purchase man.

On DD (the winter crazy sale 69% off), the Klarus P1A and P2A were on sale for the same price. i was torn between the two because i heard that they are manufactured in the same factory as Jetbeam BA10 and BA20's.

in the end i didnt get any P1A or P2A.

gaaah

You got other 1x AA-sized lights??

Well, I could have easily inserted any other modern LED light and the thouts would be similar. My point being that for a fraction of the cost, you can buy a light 2-3 times as good as anything a decade or so ago.
I got the Klarus P1A from a seller on CPF Marketplace a couple of months ago and was impressed with the quality for the price. I ordered a bunch of knives from DD but only one of them has come yet. The one they sent first was actually the Klarus P2A.
The P2A is basically a 2AA version of the P1A but brighter with longer runtime. I bought it because it was only $30 on sale at DD and I wanted a light for around the house to search for the dogs at night when they won’t come in. It works great but is a tad too large for me to EDC.
I also ordered a Jetbeam BA10 but it hasn’t come. I have a Rominsen G2 which is not quite the quality of the Klarus but I would still take it over the old Incan SF G2 from yester year.

Off topic but for some reason I can’t seem to add spaces in my paragraphs. It just comes out as one large block. I am using an iPad if that makes any difference.
See.

I would be mainly interested in the P2A Klarus for its price. Usually we never see Klarus on sale afaik, and its steady price on amazon is 39.90€+3.90€ shipping, i.e. 56.62 US-$ in total… which is still cheaper than the Jetbeam equivalent. DD is like 18€, ebay 29€. Then i am realizing that there is no actual gain over my Quark AA² with the XML LED, and the Klarus is indeed bigger (and my LD20 diffuser stuffs wouldnt fit).

Both Klarus lights are great choices, no doubt! Terrific machining quality, am i right?

Hey. And dont lose your dogs, man!!

I don’t have a Quark to compare it to but it is the brightest light I have. The P2A for about $30 US is hard to go wrong with. It’s not a pocket light but for around the home it is great.
I have already invested in rechargeable AAs and AAAs so that is why all my lights are take those batteries.
The machining and anodizing on the Klarus is first rate. It has a glass lens, orange peel reflector, O-ring sealed etc. I have tested it by putting it in a glass of water while on and it was fine. I would use it as a shallow water dive light in a pinch and I think it would be okay.

speedsix, how do you like the tint of the P1A?

please could you describe the tint on the two modes?

Tint is nice. It is pretty warm actually. Warmer than my Klarus P2A for some reason. I just got a Jetbeam BA10 and I think the Klarus is a nicer light but they are very similar.

speedsix, please explain to all of us , why on earth have you recently bought both the Jetbeam BA10 and the Klarus P1A??

i dohn understand :)

Please tell us differences you like and dislike in both :)

I think I bought the Jetbeam because I liked the Klarus so much. I hear much more about the JB and very little about the Klarus.
These lights are similar but IMHO the Klarus seems a little nicer. The clip is better and can be mount bezel up or down. The JB can only mount bezel up and it is mounted in the middle of the light so it is silly.
The Klraus seems just a bit nicer in the machining and anodizing. Appears to be a more expensive version of the JB yet it cost the same or less.
As far as light output, they are identical. Both use the Same emitter and have the same beam.
If I wasn’t planning on using the clip, I guess it would be a wash more or less. If you want to use the clip, get the Klarus.

Thanks speedsix for the personal evaluation!! Here is some further general thoughts helpful for people interested in the P2A or P1A, comparing the P1A to the P2A:

only 13hours more to go. (i think nothing will happen after that!!)

DD prices keep jumping all over the place. The PA2 is like $29 still. That should cost more than he P1A.

Damn, kreisler, I don't know if you contacted Klarus personally this time (as you did with Lumintop), but yeah, thanks a lot, mate ;) Thanks for confirming about 14500 ability and speedsix, thanks for the info about clip, I really needed one that I can put up or down. Damn, 25 bucks less on my bank account... again  lol

Well, it was $22.69  ($5 coupon + 270 DinoPoints  The good thing is that the light cost more than 30 bucks, and I haven't had to buy more stuff to reach those $30 to use coupon  )

3 hours left, btw (and yes, I think they will keep the price after that)

yes, i contacted klarus company :)

be advised that the klarus engineer's statement is in contrast to the extra cautious manual.

the clip is described here or here.

price hasnt changed because the DD timer has stopped counting lol. nice buy!!

EDIT: price hasnt changed, and the DD timer has been reset. Time left: 6 days 22H .. lol. nice Kundenverarschung, DD!!

The Jetbeam BA10 is even cheaper, 28.69$ before coupons, dinopoints, etc.:

They stated "14500 could damage the light", and not "will damage", for example. That implies a possibility to use 14500, but "as is", and Klarus will not repair nor will be responsible of any damage or personal injury it can cause (overheating, etc.), IMO.

However, take a look at this XT1A image. Anyway, could be the same thing, they just don't recommends li-ion because of overheating and high current in such a (quite) small light. Current regulated with AA but DD with li-ion.

Yeah, JB is cheaper, but you need to buy something to have $30+ total  (for use $5 off with coupon)

Does the P1A use PWM? Im thinking of getting that one maybe instead of the P2A.
