Maglite C

Hi folks,
Looking for a decent upgrade to my new Mag 4c, (incan), I’ve got my eye on a complete 700lm drop in, ( LED, reflector, etc).

What bothers me, is that the upgrade is rated as 5w, (same as a 320lm upgrade), I seem to remember reading in BLF a long time ago that the most lumens that could be expected from a watt is 100, if thats true, then the 700 figure is plainly bull!.

So being extremely low tech, I’d be very grateful if you guys could give me some advice on the following…….

1. Is 700lm from 5w realistic?

2. Would four C cells have enough horsepower to drive something like XML’s or XPG’s ?

regards, mike

Welcome to BLF lumenescent. It might be helpful if you give a bit more info, like a link to where you are considering buying this drop in.

Here are some thoughts. I just saw over in this thread someone posting lumens/W, and none of the lights tested even got 100lm/w. And I am sure this is with lithium batteries.

Perhaps the alkaline batteries, being C cells, can deliver the 1A or so of current to get 5W to the drop in. I just looked at a C cell energizer data sheet and you can get 1A out of one for about an hour, as compared to 0.1A for 70 hours. Depending on how you want to use the light, and what sort of batteries you use in it, getting a 5W drop in is going to burn through alkaline batteries really quick. If you have rechargable Nimh, then likely not so bad.

OK slider,
Tnx for the fast response, I should mention that i’m a security officer and I bought the 4c for impact defence, I have a 3d mag but found the damn thing too heavy and awkward on the belt!, a 4c is a lot lighter, but still capable of giving an attacker a headache on the richter scale, lol.
I’m not too bothered about burn time, as i’ll also be carrying an ultrafire 501D with an XML T6 that I’ve had for years, great little light!, (don’t think they sell them now).

BUT, as any flashaholic knows, the mind is automatically drawn to OTF lumens, so after swapping the crappy plastic lens for glass, I invested in a £11 led 300lm upgrade, straight drop in from an incan, and was very pleased with the result, however, the lumen magnet was still tugging away and led me here……

I’m using lloytron 3000mAh Nimh (for the time being) i’ll get some good quality batts when the other stuff is complete.
Nearly forgot to mention, the ad doesn’t specify what emitter the upgrade uses, had to contact the seller to find out, it’s a XM-L2 U3

any advice or criticism appreciated.

regards, mike

Its good you are using Nimh cells, The visible difference between 300 lumen and 700 lumen is pretty small. If you are ok spending 3x for this, go for it.

I don’t feel I have anything else to offer here regarding the 700lumen version. Perhaps others will chime in.

I will add that while this is a 3C battery light you have, you are really asking more about the plug in. You might get more response if you post in the LED Flashlights – General Info area of the forum.

OK slider,
I’ve taken your comments on board and will have a rethink on mods. Many thanks for your help!

best regards, mike.
