The 6th Annual BLF / Old Lumens Scratch Made Light Contest - Final results!

Judges have been working very hard and the results are finally in. Please accept my sincere apologies for the elongated delay!

People’s Choice Award voting has started! Please show your appreciation and vote here: http://budgetlightforum.com/node/65870

Again, the competition was very tight and all finished lights were simply awesome! This made judging very difficult, and we had to make tough decisions when arranging the contestants to correct order.

While judging we not only concentrated on what we think was the best light in the competition, but went through all the build threads and systematically gave points based on the following criteria:

  • Uniqueness/Innovativeness of the build: Is it a one of a kind? Different? Using New methods?
  • Skill level of the finished build: Does it look like a hack job? Or were the finished parts/assemblies done with skill and care?
  • Thoroughness of the build thread: Did the builder do a good job of showing and explaining to the forum, how he did the steps in the build?
  • Documenting also the failures & obstacles: How did the builder solve the inevitable problems? Documenting the obstacles and using the power of the BLF community to solve them is seen as a big plus!
  • Possible new driver design or custom firmware is seen as a plus (especially when shared and open source in a true BLF spirit)
  • Following the guidelines: Did the builder follow the rules and guidelines written in the contest thread?

All finished lights were great, so the small details like thoroughness of the build thread and documenting the obstacles were important factors when defining the final order. AND EVEN THEN, THE RESULT IN HAND MADE CATEGORY WAS A TIE!

Before going to the results, I’d like to thank once more all competitors for their hard work building the lights and documenting their builds for us readers to admire and learn from. Thank You very much!

..and then to results, with a selected comment from judges for each.

Congratulations to the winners this year! Party

I missed out on the fun this time, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to find the time to do this. Hopefully, I will be in a position to build a light next year. Big Smile

So do we switch to Flashy Mike in the machine-made category for the next pick or does FmC get next choice because of the tie?

Congrats to the winners!!!!

Oooh a tie for first place!!! … I think that means they take a saw to the first place reward and one of them gets the front half and the other the back half. Silly

Good work everyone involved.

I really didn’t see a tie coming, never mind for 1st place… I’m in discussions with CRX regarding prize selection.

Ok, after some intense discussion, CRX has chosen the Mokume.

If I am to choose next, I will have the Ti Dawn.

FmC, for at least some of us watching your builds, a tie for first place isn’t too unexpected. You guys are all very talented. Crown Thumbs Up

That Wuben TO50R looks interesting, but the “sneak preview” thread hasn’t really shown much signs of life lately…

So, I would be honored to receive the Custom C8 from Mountain Electronics (thanks Richard!).

Thanks judges and sponsors! And everyone that participated in the build threads, too.

I’m very biased here, but TO50R definitely IS very interesting. ..and the GB will happen very soon. We were just waiting for the factory to come back to work after CNY holidays. They are now back and the lights should be ready to ship mid/late March.

You may still change your choice. Smile

Ok, thanks for the info and choice, the. I don’t like changing my mind, but I do have a bunch of C8’s and nothing quite like the Wuben TO50R… so if I may be excused for waffling, I will switch to the TO50R.
