Does anyone have experience with this XM-L driver?

The description is really pitiful. I wonder how it does.

I bought a five set just before Christmas, mainly due to the terrific price. I intend to use them for XP-G lights or maybe an insanely overdriven XR-E R2. But I've not got around to either yet.

I was going to grab an MRV body for the 2A R5 but I've decided instead to slip an R5/2A in one of these 47mm headed lights in the New Year.

I like XP-G R5's for mid range throw as the hotspot doesn't get too lost in the spill as with an XM-L.

Please let me know how they do (current draw). Thanks!

Unless reviews prove otherwise, I would stick with the tried and true AMC7135 boards. You can easily mod them for 2A, but that is under driving an XM-L if that is the intended use.

I agree, but it is entirely for a different thing i'm doing. :)

Isn't that the same "2A" driver found in the newer KD C8's? See post here: https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/939?page=10#comment-96279 . I also received a Palight C8 R5 (XP-G) with the same driver and it was drawing 2.5A at the tailcap so I replaced it since I was afraid I'd burn out the emitter. See my thread here with driver photos: https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/1683?page=1#comment-99533 . Personally I don't trust it. I now really like my R5 at 1.4A!

I've used them and think they are great! In my micromags I have to have a smooth bottomed driver and they are every bit as bright as the ones I've built using 2.8A drivers which were only drawing around 2A anyway. There is PWM of course but I'm not sensitive to it. I think they are perfect for an XM-L or hot XP-G.

OK, I slipped one of these is an XR-E R2 pill in my Trustfire USA168 (an HS-802 clone). I love a bargain which at under $7 for five these drivers certainly appear to be, so they were worth a pop. All I was looking for was to drive the R2 to the absolute max which seems from other sources to be 2A.

Well the first thing I must say is that I like this driver even though it is not ideal for the R2/USA168 combo. Overall its current spread is sweet provided that you are not totally obverse to disco modes. Here are the figures.

Usings a TF 2400 @ 3.98v

H 2.23A
M 0.99A
L 0.08A
Strobe Peaking at 1.7'ish
SOS Peaking ar 2.25'ish

I'm not too sensitive to PWM but I did not find any noticeable in any mode.

Obviously the High is a bit too high for prolonged use with an XR-E but as I never use a thrower for protracted periods I might just leave this driver in place and use the High as a short burst turbo. Certainly the mid at 1A provides decent enough throw in the USA168 body anyway.

My general feelings about this driver are that while not ideal for the R2 it is probably the best bargain basement driver I've found for use in a general purpose XP-G light (or perhaps even a multi-purpose XM-L). As regards the XP-G this driver pretty comprehensively covers the spectrum of that emitter from a fully driven max to a sweet non-blinding low for confined spaces.

In January I'm certainly going to grab one of these bargain STL-V3 clones and try it with this driver and an XP-G R5. Given this driver's current spread, the smoother beam of an XP-G and the nice 47mm head of the Dongrui it should pretty much deliver one hell of a general purpose light for under $20 all in.

Excellent thanks!

VFMaddict, have you received your Dongrui All-920 (STL-V3 clone) yet and modded to XP-G? I just received mine today. Pretty nice light, but the main body tube is very very thin. Pill looks cheap, but I haven't removed it yet. In fact I haven't even popped a battery into it yet. The reflector is really deep, deeper than my C8's. I like the style of this light and can't wait to see am XP-G in it.

Do you have any plans to mod the heatsink for driving an XP-G to 2A+ in this host?

No not received mine yet. But didn't order until a week ago so its probably going to get held up is the CNY. I'll have to take a look at the pill first before I can tell if it needs a mod. It might be hollow and need a copper shelf adding for the emitter or it might not be hollow and so fit to go with an XP-G @ 2A.

I've just read your specific thread on the ALL-920 and when mine arrives it will be interesting to see how its compares to my USA168 (HS-802 Clone) with its insanely overdriven R2 (i.e. 2.2A). However, from what you say this looks like terrific budget thrower stock. Yet again it will be interesting to see how it compares to my Super Tactics UltraOK Q5. From your figures the Dongrui should just beat it due to its slightly larger head and at least as well driven emitter.

One final point - Have you seen the Jacob A60 ? Same kind of intended usage as the All-920 and UltraOK Q5, that is to say a budget thrower, but an even bigger head for around the same price. I'll certainly be grabbing one of those too as soon as the CNY ends.

Thanks for that link on the Jacob A60! I'll have to order one of those too. I like it's style a little more. Hopefully the build quality is a little better. The Dongrui isn't bad at all except for the body tube. The head seems nice and solid and the switch is firm.
