Which is the best? Do you have any other suggestions for a different flashlight?

I really like the SP31 V2.0. I really like having the tail switch vs the SP32. The S2 with an sst20 could have a great tint if that is what you like, so that option is great. The S2 with an XP-Hi was one of my first lights. Output can be equal to the SP31 if you have the ability to mod it. All real good EDC’s. You could put put an Osram flat white in the S2’s and that would throw better than them all.

Ty for the reaction. I don’t have any experience modding yet. Which one throws the farthest and do you know any comparable flashlights I should put on my shortlist?

not too sure about those…
Your parameters are vague.
“pocket”? that means a different things to different people..

I think the Lumitop GT mini is better than those, but you did not give a price preference..
I just got a hot rodded version of that, does a great job all the way to 900 feet out

anyone in NE ILLinois into get togethers?

The GT mini is pocketable but I don’t like the way it feel in my pocket because of the shape. I am looking for a flashlight shaped like a S2(+). Price wise I like to look at value. If a more expensive flashlight is worth the premium I’m fine paying more.

For the highest throw possible, I would go with the SST-20 5000k Convoy S2+.
30% more throw compared to the XP-L HI.

If you want comparable throw, but with much higher color quality, go with the SST-20 4000k 95CRI. Color will pop, and will make everything look amazing.

I was thinking the same thing.
Are there any better LEDs for throwers this size?

Not without modding, and paying quite the premium.

I’m don’t want a flooder but I would rather have 5m less throw for a significant flooding boost btw.

S2+ XPL Hi has more throw than SP31, but not a whole lot more.

Emisar D1 has notably more throw, but it’s more expensive, too.
There is also D4S, if you are Ok with a 26650 form factor.

With modding and still keeping the price under $100?

I thing the additional width from both D1 and D4S will bother me when I’m wearing jeans. I’m a sensitive guy Wink

This actually has less throw than the XP-L HI and SST-20 Convoy S2+, and even the Sofirn SP31 V2.0.

I’m carrying around a Folmov 18650s with a 4000K XP-L HI. Great light but comes with a bad emmiter imo. Modding will be in your near future if you hang out here long. A year ago I was in the dark but I feel I have come a long way since then. Find a light you like and make it better. You can get a lot of help here as well.

No.

The Emisar D1 absolutely crushes it.

Yoordie.
Get some “wrangler” jeans. then you can wear in comfort AND carry a C8+ or several other torches in there with room to spare.

I’d just grab the Convoy M2 with XP-L Hi in it. Has the biscotti driver already installed and a nice throwy emitter and SMO reflector. Pick your tint and shine on my friend.

MH20GT? One of the smallest 18650 lights I got, only slightly wider reflector than most tubelights, but emphasis is on throw even vs the regular MH20 (“GT” = “Greater Throw”).

If you don’t want a big-head light like a GTmini or P30, the MH20GT might suit ya.

+1 on the MH20GT or even the newer MH23 which I use as my EDC. Compact and good throw.

Where can one find a good deal on one of those now days? Always liked the size but never found a great deal on one. I had a SDMini that I guess was similar to the Nitecore. It found a new home. Still wish I had it. Oh well. I have a Manker U11 that is quite nice but with a OP reflector the throw suffers a bit but, that is okay by me. It’s a good little light.

I’ve only seen codes for the ’20, never for the ‘20GT.

Wish I could pick up another one cheaper…

The new Micro GT is small. With a 14500 battery you would need a spare in your pocket as well.

All below beamshots are taken with these camera settings:
shutter speed: 1/10th second
white balance: set to “daylight” white balance
ISO: 800 f/2.8

The Sofirn SP31 v2.0 and Convoy S2+ XPL-Hi are beamshots are taken at the same time.

Sofirn SP31 v2.0 (left beam) vs Convoy S2+ (XPL-Hi, 1A cool-white) (right beam)

Sofirn SP31 v2.0 (XPL-Hi, “1200 lumens” mfr rating)

Convoy S2+ (XPL-Hi, 1A, 7135×8) “1000 lumens” mfr rating

~~~
comparing the Convoy S2+ vs the Convoy S2 (S2 has a deeper reflector, and thus slightly more focused hotspot), not sure if it really throws farther or not much, compared to the S2+
The Convoy S2+ XPL-Hi 4C and Convoy S2 XPL-Hi 4B beamshots are taken at the same time.
Convoy S2+ (XPL-Hi, 4C warm-white, 7135×8)
These beamshots are taken at a ground distance of around 120 meters (flashlight to opposite building), diagonal distance estimated to be around 150 meters or so (400+ feet).
Sofirn SP31 v2.0 (XPL-Hi)
Convoy S2 (XPL-Hi 3A neutral-white, 7135x8) [note: this is the S2 with deeper reflector, not S2+]
Convoy S2+ (XPL-Hi 4C warm-white, 7135x8)
Convoy S2+ (SST20 4000K, warm-white, 7135x8)
Found a MH20GT for $60. Not sure if that is a good price or not.
I don’t recall seeing ‘em for less than 70, which is pretty much regular price.
Anytime somebody says ‘best’ I cringe a little, but ‘very good’ at a very affordable price would be a standard S2 Convoy with an inexpensive smooth reflector and an XP-L Hi emitter in the flavour of your choice.
Pot it well with some of those squishy little cubes from Intl-Outdoors, drive it at a humble 3 amps or so, and you’ll see it everything you need to see this side of an actual foot long, two pound light sabre.
Slightly better, a bit more bullet proof (but a bit less pocketable), might be a hot-rodded Solarforce P60.
Bottom line? Everyone’s ‘best’ is different, and subject to a whole lot of variables.
