Missing in action: intl-outdoor.com. Update: site is back up!

The www.intl-outdoor.com website is [temporarily] down. Site is back up!

Edit 2019-05-14:

I did alert him 2 months ago that TLS1.0/1.1 were being deprecated by 2020 and that popular browsers are already displaying warnings or errors to visitors. Hopefully this outage is temporary and is simply indicating an upgrade.

If there are others on this forum that run commercial websites, you might visit SSLLabs and do a test on your own server to see if you are ready for the TLS1.0/1.1 deprecation. If you see support for TLS1.2 or 1.3, then you’re okay. Otherwise, you should contact your web administrator or service to see if they will be upgrading before the end of the year. Sooner is better than later, as Chrome users are already being warned when they visit a 1.0/1.1 site. Such sites will be blocked entirely by Chrome 81.

I look for specials, discounted parts or simply new lights.
Intl-outdoor is a very different store compared to other shops I visit, in my opinion.

Do you think my daily visits brought down the site? too much traffic? Big Smile

in my defense, I also visit kaidomain and ebay on a daily basis.

Good to hear that a fix is in the works. This isn’t so much an inconvenience for us as it is for you! I’ve been around this Internet thing since when Compuserve and AOL were bigger than the world wide web and know very well that when a business site goes down, the business suffers a serious financial crisis. I hope things are well and that you get the site up and running soon!

Site remains down.  We don't know Hank's situation, but there's no way a commercial web host could get away with multiple days of outage and stay in business.  Every affected client would leave them and others would follow.  You cannot run a business if your site is down for multiple days in a row.

Any outage over 24 hours is entirely unacceptable for a paid web host.  If hosting is free or shared and it goes down for days, then how much is that "bargain" actually costing in terms of lost sales?  Yes, Hank's business may be rather small, but it could become non-existent without a website.

Just my opinion and I certainly wish Hank all the best.

Please don't bother Hank personally with questions about this as I don't want to add more stress to his situation or ask him for details he has no need to share.  I am not trying to tell Hank, or anyone else, what to do with their business.  If it's your livelihood on the line, then you make the decisions.

[Edit: removed rambling nonsense about web hosting choices]

How do you know it is a hosting issue?

I don’t, but Hank said that there is a “problem with the site” and that “we are trying to fix it”. It can totally be a problem with the site itself and unrelated to the host – site issues are the biggest cause of downtime – but I guess my point is that a business might be better off using a host’s templates if their site is crashing Smile .

As I said, I don’t want to interfere in something I don’t understand. Hank has a great reputation on this site and I wish him well.

I do apologize if I have been impolite or nosy. I haven’t personally run a website in almost 2 decades and even then I had a partner.

Perhaps I also worry that I played some role in this situation, since I did warn Hank in March about the deprecation of TLS1.0 and 1.1 as his site is/was still using 1.0. Though the site will require an upgrade before January 2020, I would still feel bad if my warning led to this downtime.

I don’t think you are impolite or anything, but some savvy users may be able to “see” what the issue is.

As an example:

PING intl-outdoor.com (216.157.102.206): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 216.157.102.206: icmp_seq=0 ttl=57 time=178.642 ms

^C
—- intl-outdoor.com ping statistics —-
8 packets transmitted, 8 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 178.302/190.869/226.354/15.676 ms

A simple ping works, although it is just one element of it.
My skills within hosting/web servers are not good enough to go any deeper. sorry.

Yes, pings and DNS still work fine. I haven’t “bothered” his IP with in-depth testing as that feels like none of my business, but you are certainly right. As I don’t know his situation, I just wound up rambling on and on about hosting and eCommerce for no good reason.

I’m simply refreshing the domain and IP in my browser every day or so and seeing if anything comes up.

No worries – I do the same thing because I just got rid off many lights and need new, better lights.
There were weeks were new lights popped up all the time or the prices changed. Can’t wait to get something new.

Also, I had only good experiences with intl-OD so far. Fast shipping too with a very unique set of light products.

MTN is also selling Emisar Products. You may pay a few bucks for the shipping, but I had my D18 in 3 days. Good luck with whatever fixing the issue. I’ve ordered many times from both.

Duh. I forgot that Mtn carried Emisars. Of course. Good that you mentioned this, so thanks.

Site is back up with new IP address. Congrats, Hank! Smile

Update 2019-05-22: Site has remained up for more than a week, so it appears that this issue is resolved. I won’t make further posts to this thread unless something changes and will no longer monitor Hank’s site on a regular basis.
