[MOD] RRT01 (slo-mo progression)

Jetbeam RRT01 is one nice flashlight with very intuitive UI. The concept is great, the look is OK (most, including me prefer older styling), butt…as there’s always reasons for BLF people to mod anything. For RRT01 it’s a big BUTT:

Dangerous no LVP, thermal limiter nor output step down.

Melted wrapper, tripped internal protection, bulged bottom

Hole drilled to relieve the safety switch. Usable but no protection anymore. I resealed the hole with two components potting silicone.

Stock pill machining is bad, very loose rattling tolerance (for the rotary ring). Uneven, eccentric milling, too many unused holes (recycled leftover surplus pill for various MCPCB model). I over saturated the picture to show the machining marks better.

In my opinion, this one is the worst from engineering POV practice. To accommodate new MCPCB screw hole location, Jetbeam drilled and tapped new pair halfway over existing holes. :person_facepalming:

Stock copper MCPCB isn’t any better.
Definitely rough and not flat. This MCPCB was punched with dies instead of routed. Note how the rounded base edges eats up the precious mating surface area. A solder blob made things worse preventing flat contact between the pill and the MCPCB. Mind the low quality phone picture

Recycled MCPCB designed for Eye10 dated back to 2012 February 11th. The time when Sunwayman V11R was a big hit.

For me, stock RRT01 is potentially dangerous and definitely has to be modified to keep up with current flashlight standards. It has lots of potential and also lots of works.

I know I’m very slow but at least, this is what I made so far…

Pic taken fresh from the machine, there are still flares and chips
all three in the left are modified brass and copper version. Note extra O-ring groove for a complete waterproofnes. Also tighter shaft to rotary knob clearance for smooth rotation

Left: modified, Right: stock OEM

UPDATE 190724: Aluminum pill progress

————————————————
Optic update and beamshots:

Great works Clemence

So any preview of what we can expect to fit in this custom pill?

Any MCPCB/PCB with 13mm diameter. Mine will use quadtrix E17A

[Clemence]

those look nice.

That is a lot of effort! I hope that many people want one with your modifications. At least I like my (stock, with swapped led) RRT-01 very much

With reflector or TIR?

That's no simple mod you're doing. Impressive.

As for my RRT-01, I just plan to LED swap it. I like the rest of it well enough stock. I was sorely tempted by another thread's listing of 18650 tubes that LEGO with it, but I think the head is large enough that I wouldn't want to carry it at with the added length.

Nice. My rrt is waiting.

As usual, I love TIR optics and already prepared several choices. I don’t want to use stock pill, it’s a failed recycled design. Note those multiple holes made for several Jetbeam models. The driver also another recycled component from Niteye TCR1, with higher output.

EDIT: the funniest failure was how Jetbeam made thread offset from the original holes. And unused big hole in the center completely covered by the MCPCB. The latter is actually a good thing if there’s a triple 13mm MCPCB available

I’m very disappointed to see how the stock rotary dial is not even dustproof. It has one O-ring on top but nothing at the bottom. With the thick sticky grease behind it and excessively large clearance, a dunk on a sandy beach will ruin it. I prefer lower sensible output like the older design.

[Clemence]

Will moded rrts be available to order?

This is why I couldn’t resist to make a new pill

Yes, but very very later I guess

[Clemence]

Looking forward to seeing your mod!

This would be a nice upgrade for my RRT-01s. I would love a few if they become available in copper

Nice :+1:

I am so excited to see this! Clemence work is always top quality! Hope they will be in copper instead of brass…

Nice work Clemence :+1: .
I’ll take a copper pill with no wire holes drilled if you ever wanna sell one.

That’s a lot of work replicating those pills. Nice job :+1:

Excellent work, Clemence! :+1: Great to see all this, keeping the RRT-01 as relevant as can be.

Thanks for all those supportive comments above
In my opinion, pure copper (I used 99,95% copper) is not the best material for RRT01 for below reasons:

- too soft, dent easily

- copper thread tend to be weaker than 2024 aluminum or any brass thread.

- hard to machine

- expensive

- too heavy for EDC. Stock brass pill weights 17,08gr, modified brass (high copper) 23,26gr, copper (99,95%) 23,92gr

  • also, aesthetically non visible

For RRT01, modified pill made from 2024 aluminum weights approximately only 7,42gr. More than half stock pill with thicker LED base and more material overall. Although copper has roughly triple the thermal conductivity of stock brass pill, with aluminum its already doubled. What do you guys think?
