Dang, my Sanrenmu 7010 (710) frame lock broke

I know this close-up pic makes it look all jankitty but I did baby this lovely little knife. Now I wish I had abused it more as it’s pretty much toast without a blade lock to keep it safe and it had a lot of life left in it. I picked it up today and it just fell apart in my hands!

I always took this on fishing and kayak trips as I knew it could handle the water being all stainless. Any suggestions as an alternative budget all-stainless knife of similar form factor?

Cheap knife made of cheap materials breaks…who would have thunk it?

When you buy the next one, buy two—two is one and one is none.

Chris

That's a shame!

SanRenMu generally makes high-quality knives.

If you want an assisted-opener, the Kershaw Pico is a good relatively inexpensive choice.

It costs several times as much as the SanRenMu 7010 however.

The cheaper the knife the more I am inclined to use it. Probably will just go look for another SRM 7010. Unfortunately I see the all stainless model I prefer is out at a lot of the usual places…

Be sure to dissect the pocket clip to mod a EDC light! You bought a cheap knife that served its purpose while it lasted and now you have an expensive pocket clip to show for it!

Going to the ER without health insurance, after the cheap knife fails and cuts you open, will be at least two hundred 22 times more expensive than buying a 100$ knife you can rely on.

Reason for Edit: Math problem

i’ve used budget knives all my life and i’ve cut myself infinitely more with a cheese slicer.

Actually, the only time i’ve ever cut myself with a knife (barely a pinprick though) was with a Benchmade.

As for OP, that’s weird. i’ve never seen a lockbar snap off. did you overextend it when unlocking? the handle steel on all my 710s is quite soft and lets itself overextend pretty easily.

Your point is irrelevant. Lock breaks on a cheap knife: if it happens while using it you’re in serious trouble. Being cheap it probable wasn’t all that sharp anyway. The Benchmade’s lock didn’t fail did it? I didn’t think so…

It was actually shaving sharp, not a clean shave, but it didn’t rip hairs out. and yes, the Benchmade lock failed.

Stop being so anti-china, cheap and low quality isn’t the same thing anymore. Sanrenmu is a good brand (they’re also the same guys who make Land and Realsteel, and also make many knives for other brands)

If anything, there are going to be significantly more reports of Benchmade lock failures than SRM, and lets not even begin with general quality control issues, of which BM is the king.

Yeah, there are plenty of low-cost high-quality knives out there.

Lots of people on BLF post about them all the time.

While I tend to gravitate towards assisted-openers, even then there are relatively-low-cost high-quality knives.

If you like expensive knives, that's not a problem, but there's no need to verbally trash the good stuff like most SanRenMu knives.

I’m just laughing at the two post above me at how defensive they are.
1 I didn’t bash china
2 I didn’t verbally trash this company

This knife’s lock failed. He stated he’ll probably buy another. My remarks highlight the exorbitant cost of heath care in the US. Spyderco knives rule!

You guys are really showing your failure to appreciate this lock failed and how potentially serious that is. OUT.

Good thing Sanrenmu makes some knives for Spyderco right?

There are also countless videos of Spyderco locks slipping, but hey nothing broken means it’s not a failure right?

It was last clipped into a fabric pocket on my kayak and I don’t recall anything occurring. I’m sure it must have taken a knock or some force applied to it that I don’t recall.

I like the Sanranmu Land models in all stainless, although they appear several centimeters longer than the 7010 and the sweet size is one thing I always liked about the 7010.

yeah the 910 is a “full size” knife. there’s the 810 which is in between the two which is still being sold in plain steel afaik

it’l have a stronger detent and more tension on the lockbar though

There is no way to exert undue pressure on the 7010
without removing the clip

Take a tip.

Fishing/Boat knife.
When you want them you want them NOW.

Get a fixed blade fishing knife.

I have one here over 50 yrs old.

Folders are toys
for in your pocket and cleaning your finger nails.
NOT serious work.

I have both. From Custom Fixed to Puma Folders.
down to the Ganzo. SRM. Enlan, etc.

Any serious stuff.
Either my 2 1\2inch. 4 1\2 in or 6 in FIXED blades get used.
THink of your fingers mate.

Wow… that sure is a clean break!! So clean in fact it looks like it was heat treared, which hardens; and the not tempered… which relieves internal stresses.

I doubt it was…. but that is a amazingly clean break.

Good luck finding a replacement.
.

Sorry to hear that it broke. Based on some details* this is a 2014 or earlier model. So at least you got a few years out of it !

To clarify a misconception: the pocket clip does not serve as an overtravel stop. It is not positioned sufficiently to serve this purpose. You can easily overtravel a 7010 lockbar if you are not careful.

Suggested replacement? Personally I like the 7063 with axis-lock:

7073LUC is also very nice, similar size to 7010 but much more refined.

In approx 2014 they changed to a hidden stop pin, hidden detent ball hole, drilled some stress-relief holes at several positions etc.
