Can RD POWER SUPPLY charge batteries

Hello guys, how’s your days?

Today I want to show the application of our power supply. We can use DPS3005 as an example, it can provide up to 32V DC voltage and 5A current, you can use it to power on loads like LED lights, fans or somethings else. 

Recently some customer ask me if our power supply can charge their Li-ion battery, of course our DPS/DPH power supply can charge battery directly, and you don’t need to add a diode, there are two notes you need to know: our power supply can charge battery but they are not designed to charge battery professionally, and never reverse the input of the battery, you can see the bad consequence at the end of this article.

At present, our power supply can charge Li-ion battery, Lead storage battery, NiMH battery and so on(as long as it is a rechargeable battery and you set the right voltage and current). the charging mode generally adopts constant current and constant voltage charging, but does not mean constant current and constant voltage from the beginning to the end, but a limiting voltage constant current-----constant voltage limiting current- ---End progress.

We can use Li-ion battery as an example. At first, the charging current is constant, but the voltage of the battery gradually increases with the charging process. When the battery terminal voltage reaches about 4.2V (3.7V is the nominal voltage and 4.2V is the peak voltage), the constant current charging is changed to constant voltage charging.

There are some 18650 Li-ion batteries, the capacity of the battery we need to test is 1200 mAh, so when the current is reduced to about 12mA(0.01C), it is fully charged.

In addition, the national standard stipulates that the charging time does not exceed 8 hours, that is, even if the current has not reached 0.01C, 8 hours has arrived, and the charging is considered to be over. (The battery with no problem in quality should reach 0.01C in 8 hours, the battery with poor quality, it will be meaningless after waiting)

Under normal circumstances, the Li-ion charging rate of 0.5C is safe, so when the battery charging current is 600mA, it can be safely charged without reducing the performance of the battery pack and shortening the service life.

By the way, the charging voltage and current of other batteries are attached:

1 NiMH battery 1.2V/0.1C 

2 ternary lithium battery 4.2V/0.5C 

3 lithium iron phosphate battery 3.6V/1C

4 12V Lead storage battery 14.4V/0.1C 

For specific charging details, please refer to the manual for purchasing the product, whichever is the actual parameters above. 0.5C is safe without knowing the specific parameters of the product. (For reference only)

We set 4.2V, 0.6A to charge this 18650 Li-ion battery, be careful not to connect the counter electrode.

Through the picture we can see the whole charging process, the battery charging starts with a constant current icon CC, ends with a constant voltage icon CV,. It proves that our power supply can charge lithium batteries.

You can also use it to charge a 12V Lead storage battery,capacity is 69Ah,0.1C is 6.9A, we set 14.4V/5A(DPS3005 max output current is 5A) to charge it, and you can see a CC to CV progress.

Like what I said before:

You should be careful and never connect the counter electrodes, and if you do that, there are some consequences you can see :

A.Fuse burnt, red light on, you need replace a new fuse. 

B.Diode burnt, you need replace a new diode. 

C.MOSFET burnt, replace new MOSFET. 

D.ALL burnt, buy a new power supply. Safety first, don’t reverse the input of the voltage. 

but you can add a reverse protection when charge a battery, use a diode and a fuse less than 20A
