**NEW** Thrunite TC15 Custom Edition /// Full Review

This is the ThruNite TC15 Custom Edition, sent to me for review from ThruNite and NO other compensation other then keeping the light.
(ALL links are NON affiliated)
Light can be found on Amazon……….
Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQYW8J2?ref=myi_title_dp
Amazon CA: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07W7R2DVK?ref=myi_title_d

Or on the main ThruNite site………..
http://www.thrunite.com/

They also asked me to mention , Free Ti3 key-ring torch worth $13.95 for the first 100 honest reviews on Amazon (Massage us on our Facebooke @ThruNite)

Now on to the review…………………………..

The TC15 Custom Edition came well packaged in a larger outer box with the ThruNite box inside that and large bubble wrap around the inner box. The package includes the TC15 , Nylon Holster , Spare O-ring x2, Lanyard , Pocket Clip , ThruNite 3100mAh 18650 IMR Battery , USB Charging Cable , Spare USB port Cover and a Spare Side Switch Insert. This light is available in both neutral and Cool White.

This is an 18650 sized EDC with plenty of lumens for whatever the purpose may be , ranging from 2300 listed lumens in Turbo , all the way down to 1 listed lumen in firefly mode. A simple UI also on this light , with a long press for Moon Mode , Single click to turn light on , hold down switch to cycle through L/M/H , double click for turbo from any mode and another double click from there for strobe. A single click turns light off and L/M/H have mode memory.
The size is very comparable to the always popular BLF A6 and other 1 inch tube lights.
Shown here with the BLF A6 (on left) and the Olight M2R Warrior (on right) ………..

I like the styling on this one with the “ribbing” , instead of the traditional knurling on the tube. Along with the more “flat” type finish on this light , the grip is exceptional with the rib and finish combination. I also like the (Bronzy) color on this new Custom Edition , I know opinions will vary however.

The Included nylon holster is lightly padded inside (front and back portion) and fits the light well , while having a belt loop holder and a plastic loop for attachment to a backpack or other desired places , with the help of a carabiner or other such attachment aids.

The Branding , or etching is all done well and I have found no thin or bare spots on the anodizing anywhere. As always with Thrunite , these lights are all serial numbered.

The clip is made sturdy and attaches with a good amount of force , it stays in place well once attached to the light , while holding firmly when attached inside my jeans pocket as well.

The XHP35 emitter is perfectly centered in a nice little smooth reflector and those sit behind an AR coated lens.

The Spring in the tailcap looks to be a good quality and appears to be gold plated (no spring on driver). The Tailcap is made flat also , so the light tailstands well , even when the lanyard is attached , as the lanyard eye is made on one side of the tailcap .
The fins are not large , as the light is not itself large enough to put large sized fins on, but for the small size , it seems ThruNite got the thermal regulation (step down) set about right.
All of the threads are well cut and smooth on this light. On this particular sample the lube was very lightly applied , which is something I am NOT used to seeing when I take a ThruNite product from the box.

The 3100mAh ThruNite Branded cell that comes with this package , can be charged either with the USB onboard charger , or the cell can be removed and charged externally on a traditional charger. I have also tried Button Top , High Drain cells of various brands and they all seem to work fine in the light. The High Drain Flat tops however , are too short for use in this light. The shorter flat top cells , will let the light operate , but with a bump or decent shake , the light will usually go off or change modes when using the flat top cells. This is due to only having the spring at the tail of the light am sure and just not enough pressure to maintain good contact with the shorter cells against the driver contact.

The side switch button is like many of the ThruNite switches and it is a nice metallic button. The center of the switch is lighted to indicate power on (Blue) , Low voltage (Steady Red) and improper charging or other problems with the cell (purple). When the cell capacity is at 20% or above , the Blue indicator will show (other than Firefly mode) , at 10% to 20% the Red indicator light will come on and stay on steady. At 10% or below the Red indicator will then start (Blinking Red) to let you know the cell is depleted. Once the cell is fully depleted the Low Voltage Protection will simply shut the light off.

As with most all the XHP35 based lights , this one puts off alot of heat. The step down is set to the point the light steps down , just about the time you think it will get “too hot” and for the small size the light seems to handle the overall heat pretty well

The driver seems to be well regulated on my sample , as I checked the lumens with the included cell in all modes with , a Samsung 30Q , LG HE4 and an Efest purple high drain. All were within around 30 to 40 lumens of each other when tested in the Turbo mode and stayed pretty close through the rest of the modes , with even less fluxuation in the lumens gap.
The run times and lumens listed by Thrunite also seem to be fairly accurate , as I know they will not be exact on every light no matter what company makes the light.

EDIT: Sorry , Forgot the beamshots , so here they are……………

Garage door 15 Yards—-L / M / H / Turbo

Garage 70 Yards————-Med/High/Turbo

Gate 50 Yards————Med/High/Turbo

Gate 75 Yards————High/Turbo

Gate 100 Yards———-High/Turbo

EDIT 2:
Just an update………..

I decided to take the original TC15 apart and I dedomed the XHP35 that was in it , just to see how much it tightened up the beam. I figure the result is about the same as putting a XHP35 HI in the light. (do correct me if I am wrong here)

The beams and lumens output were almost identical to begin with on the 2 lights.

Anyway the result was as expected when I started the simple mod , with a tighter beam and warmer tint from the dedomed emitter. Also as with pretty much any dedome , there was a loss of lumens. I dropped about 290 lumens in the Turbo mode at start , but with more light down the middle , the hotspot looks brighter than the TC15 Custom Edition that still has the dome on. There is still plenty of useable spill for walking or what have you with the dedomed emitter also , just not as broad of an area as it started out.

Here are the beamshots showing how much tighter the beam is now and the tint change , just incase anyone might be thinking about putting a XHP35 HI in one of these lights or doing a slice or dedome on the emitter that is in it.

Below is my test results for the lumens using the included Thrunite 3100mAh cell. All the run time testing and lumens testing in the charts , was done with the Thrunite cell only , since there was very little difference when testing other cells.

For those who may want to see the live outdoor footage comparing the Olight M2R Warrior and the ThruNite TH10 V2 with this light , that footage begins at 15:30 of the video timeline.

Glad to do the review…………
They are the same light internally , it is basically the Custom edition has the different anodizing and just looks and feels a lot different. Actually much more grippy than the original and I personally like the color of the custom edition better.

I wonder if ThruNite is ever willing to ship to Europe again.

I just tried to order this custom TC15 only to find out that shipping to Germany is not possible. Sad

Sounds fair enough. I wonder if they are willing to accept reviews elsewhere than Amazon. Amazon is somehow unpredictable in terms of accepting honest reviews, especially if these are paid reviews (= get the item free of charge in return of a review). It's very risky for ThruNite to do that as Amazon might also ban the seller from their platform.

Do you have the right e-mail address? Is it really facebooke@thrunite.com? I only know service@thrunite.com where I always received immediate and helpful feedback.

Thrunite DOES want honest opinions and reviews of their lights. I had the TH30 , that was under listed specs by over 300 lumens in Turbo and 200 lumens in High mode and I thought it would be a bad idea to post a review on that particular sample really. They told me to proceed with my review and post my findings as they were , because they want honest reviews even if the item was not performing as it should.

As far as the Amazon thing , I know what you are saying as a lot of those reviews are “bought”. But I feel ThruNite does really just want honest reviews after dealing with them for as long as I have. They do not have you buy the light for a dollar or some mess , just so you can make a review on Amazon as a verified seller.

First of all, thank you for the nice review that really catched my attention about the TC15.

Sorry if some of my words were misunderstood. I really appreciate manufacturers that accept and welcome honest reviews with differentiated feedback. I did not mean to criticize ThruNite at all. It's Amazon that sometimes act unpredictable when they do not accept reviews. I once tried to post honest and unbiased (no 5 stars or 1 star) reviews on Amazon and failed to publish them for reasons unknown. I know about some other reviewers that made the same experience. But that's something to discuss elsewhere as I do not want to derail this thread and distract from the interesting review. Wink

I have sent an e-mail to service@thrunite.com and asked for more information about the availability outside US/CA/JP.

I understood what you were saying about the reviews , it may have been me that did not come across clearly. Amazon has indeed had some shady reviews through the years.
I just was trying to convey that ThruNite was not asking people to make a good review on Amazon to get a free light as I have seen before on Amazon as you are talking about and no offense was taken by me at all.

Again thanks and as always , I am glad to do the reviews.

You make it look like one I should buy, even though I barely have room left for even a smallish light such as this! lol Nice output, does it get hot in the hand or does the step down control this well enough to not really have a problem? Nice to see that their output numbers were pretty much spot on, always a good thing….

Now, after all my recent experimentation.. are any coins left laying around? Wink

Thanks Robo, for making me want YET Another Thrunite light….

Haha………yea you need to add to the collection , may be left in the dark if the power goes out……….for a month maybe?

The light does get pretty hot before the step down , but about the time you think it is just “too hot” it will step down.

I will look under my couch cushions for spare change and donate it to your cause if you need it that bad…lol

Andddddddd you are welcome. Big Smile

It seems ThruNite makes really good boost drivers. They really know how to kick the XHP35 to drive it to its very limits, i.e. 2.3A or even more. Dale, I'm sure you'll be able to squeeze out some more lumens after some modification work. Silly Big Smile

I wish they sold these drivers separately. A friend of mine is absolutely happy about his original TC15 that gets reeeaaally hot on Turbo and maintains brightness longer than any other flashlight in comparable size and weight. I really hope ThruNite changes their mind and restarts selling these directly to Europe again. Their small portfolio of lights over here is not worth to mention and the TC15 is only available in CW.

Try cleaning the cell ends well and also the back of the driver and other contact points. Many times this will solve the short turbo mode.

Yes have done that. Tried also, 30Q,VTC6,VTC5a,Molicel P26 variable results but still short Turbo.

My Rofis MR70 is exactly the same.

Well you have already ruled out my next suggestion on another cell.

Video it and send a short video to thrunite how it acts , along with what you tried to correct the problem. I would think they would replace it.

EDIT: as mentioned in the main review (OP) I also tried a number of cells in my review sample and the driver seems to be vary well regulated. I had pretty consistent results with only 30 to 40 lumens variance in Turbo mode and the rest of the modes were even closer together. Another reason it makes me think something wrong in the driver or in the ground path of your light somewhere. Could even be the emitter didn’t get a good reflow?

Some feedback about my e-mail to service@thrunite.com

I was asking to do a review of the TC15 custom military tan edition and if there's any chance to buy it in Europe/Germany.

They replied that it is unavailable to EU customers now but sent me a link to Amazon DE along with the information it is being restocked again in 10 days.

So far, they didn't sell the NW version at all. No word about my inquiry for a review, though.

Hopefully they will broaden the shipping to cover more area. Looks like it could only benefit them in the sales department , unless the shipping rates to certain areas might be too high?

Unlike Thorfire , Sofirn and a few others , ThruNite is not one of the easiest companies to become a reviewer for from my experience. They send out very limited quantities of their lights for review. I asked them several times and had pretty much given up when they contacted me 3 years or a little more ago , to review for them and I have been doing reviews for ThruNite since.

I really like the products and also like the fact they do not want me to hide anything or even tell a little white lie about their product , asking for only my honest opinion and true findings when I review their stuff.

Good luck with becoming a reviewer for them though , or at least getting a review on the light you specifically asked to review.

Thank you robo819.

My experience with ThruNite was excellent so far. I once asked them if there's any chance to buy the TN4A holster as spare part - they sent me one free of charge. That's great customer service. In 2018 they stopped shipping lights to Europe from their US headquarters (www.thrunite.com). By that time I asked to buy their Catapult V6 Mini and was offered their promo price by ordering it directly via e-mail incl. direct payment to their Paypal address. A week later I received my light from a German warehouse. Another great purchase experience.

I can only presume but guess they ran into some trouble with European tax laws and customs when selling flashlights directly. They also closed all their Amazon stores "ThruNite EU" subsequently by that time. Now, they have relaunched their presence here but still it's by far not the same as it was before.

The good news is, I just found their TC15 available for sale in Germany. But it's not the fancy custom military tan version...

I don’t know if it is just listed as such , or if they actually ship some of their lights “international” , but on this Amazon page , if you look on the side panel to the left , there is a box to check for international shipping eligible…………..
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=thrunite+tc15+customized&rh=p_n_shipping_opti...

Also good to hear you have had good experiences with them. I am sure as with pretty much any company out there, a few have had an experience at some time or other with the company that they were not happy with , but overall I think thrunite has a pretty good track record to the best of my knowledge.

I dropped about 290-300 lumens in the Turbo mode at start , but with more light down the middle , the hotspot looks brighter than the TC15 Custom Edition that still has the dome on (HD) emitter.

These beamshots were also added in the OP as Edit 2.

I like the tightened beam profile, my walks generally have me trekking down our 300 yd long driveway and the extra reach is welcome. Thanks for showing us what tis little light is capable of.

YW…….It makes a good bit of difference in the throw for sure , but stills maintains the useable spill.

I had a mad moment and ordered this from Amazon.com, on Thursday and was informed it would be delivered on the 25th. It turned up at 2pm Monday, and according to the tracking information, it came from the States :-). Now that was quick.

And a very nice flashlight as well.

Bonum commune communitatis.

Yarp.

Yes that was pretty quick service. I am liking both of mine (original and Custom) , but I do like this Custom edition just a little better for the looks and the feel of the light.

Can you please tell me how you took the TC15 apart? It would be nice to know how the head can be dismantled. Thank you! Smile

Well surprisingly the one I took apart was not as tightly glued as most of the thrunites to begin with.
The method I have had luck with (that I have taken apart without damage) is to use a fairly rigid piece of rubber on a hard flat surface to place the end of the bezel against just as hard as I can. I also use a thinner rubber strip wrapped around , just above where the bezel should break loose , to hold the head itself. Then while pressing down hard , grunt and turn red in the face until things finally give way.

Thank you robo819 Thumbs Up Can you show me on a picture where the bezel breaks loose when turning the head section of the light? It seems ThruNite was very successful hiding any visible gaps on the TC15's head. Smile

I gave the original TC15 away just a few days after I modded it so I do not have it for reference now. I looked at the new TC15 Custom in this review and it looks like they went to a solid head instead of the bezel being made separate.

That’s about right as I had planned on modding the new one as I did the original though , because I liked the more throwy beam that it had with the domeless emitter.
