Looks like marketing failure to me

well everyone becomes white when u shine a 100000 lumen flashlight at them

i lost it at “owns a handheld electric mixer” who would actually pay for a subcription to read this failstream media crap??

I go from Brown to black….love the WP!

This is how marketing departments target their advertising, how special interest groups and lobbyists attempt to gauge and influence public opinion, etc.

Pretty soon (or right now) we’ll have AI collating and analyzing this data without any human effort needed. I’d say what simple things can predict about a person is a very relevant topic for anyone not living completely off the grid.

very salable I think you mean?

The Washington Post has settled to peddling lies and salacious gossip (not talking this story), Sad to see a former venerable and necessary journalistic icon sink into a toilet full of shit. Voluntary they went, no less.

If you don’t like the news source, try another reporter

or, of course, search for the original source, if it’s not paywalled

I suspect this has a lot to do with where they did the study. In earthquake, tornado, or hurricane country, I’d bet flashlights are a lot more commonly found (and I’d further bet the marketers are a lot better clued about the fact that all people may well need to have good flashlights.
But that followup is left to some enterprising graduate student.

well that sort of crap is meant to get clicks for ad revenue.
as for pet and flashlight ownership i have asian, black, and hispanic friends with both.
someone threw crap in the air to see if ad revenue went up.
that itself is a sinking ship thanks to ublock origin and a fat hosts file.
never browse without them!

There are big lies, bigger lies, and statistics. Especially if funded (or done) by a government agency.

Very interesting. So I am a Latin White in this case !!! LOL

I was given my dog (who has now been with me for over ten years) by a Nigerian friend who loves dogs.

None of that .gov / WaPo intellectual diarrhea applies to me anyway.

Some days I identify as a rich minority.

Other days I identify as a poor majority.

A few times I've identified as someone 45 yrs. younger than my chronological age would indicate, as calculated by the date on my birth cert.

Once lately, I identified as a different skin color, and was instantly offended by anyone who just looked at me, because I knew they were wrong in thinking they knew what they thought they saw.

The thing I most like about BLF is the range of knowledge and free sharing of info and help about flashlights.
I hope I’m wrong here, but when i read the comments in this thread about the “lies” that define any research conducted by govt, and labeling the WP as ‘peddling lies and salacious gossip’, I wonder if BLF populated with trolls.

Fixed that for ya. :+1:

Really? The Washington Post’s current Executive Editor is Marty Baron, who was Executive Editor at the Boston Globe when they exposed the Catholic child sexual abuse scandal, and that investigative reporting garnered a Pulitzer Prize. What evidence exists to substantiate the charge that his current publication ‘peddles lies and salacious gossip’?

The only way to add to the accuracy of this statement is to add an academic looking for funding.

BLF is a refuge from the drivel that infests other sites

Many quoted researchers are important researchers. Some simply quote themselves and base much of their fame on nothing but self-praise. The journal “Nature” scourges this practice.
I’ve been there. With politicians, the first question is not “what are the rules?”, but “what is the desired outcome?”. Or else …… And everybody knows. An academic also has to pay for his food and his mortgage. So he writes that feasibility-study. The best he can do is to sneek in some implicit warnings in the footnotes.
