Modded the Zoomie

I built the UF-20 zoomie host a few weeks ago and was pretty happy with it, but wanted MORE power. I found an xhp50.2 3v and dropped it in...

The plastic retainer has a 5x5mm square cutout- perfect for the xhp50 size die. It's the K2 2A bin 6000k which is supposedly pretty high. In case anyone's interested, I got it from Aliexpress LHT Flashlight Store. It wasn't cheap but came on a thick 16mm Kaidomain DTP board.

The driver is the same FET Convoy driver, but I added thicker wires and a thicker bypass wire. I bypassed the spring in the tail cap as well. That made a really big difference with the sst40!

On the fresh Sony VTC6 the output is astounding.

Zoomed in the hotspot is bigger than the sst40. You cannot see the 4 individual dies of the xhp50.2.

Moving outside...

Just a solid shaft of light. Doesn't throw quite as far as the sst40, but it's much brighter.

Pointed it up...

On flood mode it's crazy bright.

I thought I'd have issues with the 4 dies being visible, and they are with the cross pattern, but just barely. You can't even see it in the photos.

I like the beam much better than the sst40. Yes, the sst40 throws more, the battery runs down faster on turbo, and the sst40 has a brighter hotspot, but less flood and isn't as bright. I say the brightness is doubled easily. There is a noticeable corona. The xhp50 isn't breaking a sweat and doesn't get as hot as the sst40 either. I know I can push it much harder. Maybe a driver swap is in order?

Thanks for looking.

Nice job . Just started playin with zoomies . Nice to see this mod . I had been wondering what an xhp50 would do in a zoom light.

Very cool!

The 50.2 3v is the way to go unless you use a boost driver or do a 2x li-ion setup. The space between the dies isn’t nearly as pronounced as with the 1st gen. I was surprised that you could barley see the dies or spaces. You do lose some throw with the bigger die size, but get crazy flood plus I like how the beam looks since it’s not so square in this host. For max output get a fet driver with a very low resistance fet and something like a vtc6 or 30Q. I bet in a larger host it would be even better.

What is the tail current on max?

I measured it before I bypassed the switch spring with the sst40 and it was about 4A, I think like 3.7. The xhp is like 5.6A. I know that’s not accurate. That’s on my multimeter so the current is higher than that. I don’t have a clamp meter so I cant get a accurate figure, but The xhp is barely breaking a sweat at that output 20W. It gets warm but not hot. I know I can run it up to 30W+. My best guess, compensating for the resistance of the meter is at least 6A with the sst40, and probably close to 7-8A with the xhp.
