Flashlight modders get together party

As you can see from the content on the 1 st page this started under a different topic name as my attempt to find a light modding mentor, in the process, another idea took over and someone below suggested that I can the topic name to reflect the current sentiment.

I am thinking of hosting a flashlight modder’s get together in NYC area , so we can share ideas or just plain have a good time. , No idea if this is normally done here or if anyone’s interested. No obligation to do anything , although if you bring your favorite mods, I’m sure all will get a kick out of it. Depending on the number of people if this is at mine or my gf’s place, the food will be provided. Just bring what you would like to drink. We are both in Brooklyn. You don’t have to be a guru modder, just crazy about flashlights will do. We could plan to have it some time this years, what do you guys/gals say?

below is the original thread content……

Hi
Even though I’ve been following the flashlight industry for the last 3 months and now own like 15-20 lights and understand the basic concepts, there is still a million basic thing I don’t know, well let’s be honest, I know next to nothing about modding them . I am sure someone can teach me, or give me a crash course or at least refer to several best resources that describe changing the LEDs, driver, how to pick the best one and the best led for what you want to do and where to get them etc. or just a few good advice would be very appreciated. I’d like to create my own perfect light . Not sure how much this education should cost, probably depends on how extensive this will be , and in what shape of form, maybe over Skype, maybe in written form, or over whatsup voice/ written or just refer to useful links. I think I can be a quick study as I understand the main engineering concepts.
Thanks!

What would be cool would be a new category on learning the basics with a series of posts on drivers, emitters etc.

So everyone can add their knowledge like a wiki and we’d all learn tons.

I love flashlights but know very little about their inner works. Would love to learn more too…

Thant would be good too for everyone’s sake. But nothing can replace a good mentor who can pinpoint exactly what one needs to know. This is what I’d be looking for right now at least.

Perhaps there’s a video with step by step modding and keeps it simple?

Hi Even, almost everebody have started same as you do. Just take your time, read through the forum. After few weeks or months you will know how to make a basic mods. Buy a Convoy S2+ host and some parts (after some reading you will find out), buy some basic tools, if you don ´t have it, like soldering iron. You will start your flashlight adventure way better than with some fast lessons. Don ´t be in rush ;).

You need a basic understanding of electronics. You’ll need a couple hundred dollars worth of tools and modding material. Then you’ll need to practice to refine your new skills. But the most important part is read, read, and read. You learn the most just by reading and practicing what you have read. Its not hard but takes time. Probably more time than most are willing to give form a single person. That’s where this forum comes in. The knowledge you seek is all right here on this forum. Members here donated there knowledge to share to help others. You have to put in the time to learn by reading and the search engine at the top left of this forum is your friend. Having a teacher may fast track you a little but you will still have to read and practice. Somethings just can’t be taught, they need hands on experience. My advice is to read and research with the search engine above, buy your tools and material, practice using them and ask any questions or problems here you might have and we’ll try to steer you in the right direction. This place is a wealth of knowledge and friendly advice if you seek it.

Very good advice and I believe I do have basic tools and was coincidentally just eyeballing the convoy s2+ Host. There is nothing wrong with your advice and it is probably the best general one but the problem is I sometimes lose patience over several months, I might get frustrated or bored over such a long period of time. In other words instant gratification ( more/ less instant results) would sure fuel my enthusiasm so I was looking for a faster way to do it. Not necessarily looking to become the all - knowing guru if light mods, just be able to mod a few and show it off as sort of my own creation:) vanity might be a sin, but without sins there wouldn’t be any virtues…

A good place to start is the Convoy S2. It has been modded alot that’s why its so popular.

I couldn’t agree more with every word you said, and not looking to “cheat” the natural order of things. I have a basic understanding of electronics and I was taught as an engineer ( not in the field of electronics but still) . I think I might have many of the tools needed already and willing to read the wealth of material and appreciate deeply the time people donate to the forum and would equally be willing to donate my time to help others in something I know better than they do.

I just think an hour or 2 of an initial crash course/ session with a mod guru would do me a lot of good and save ton of time reading something I might not need. After that I probably will have some isolated questions and that may be all I need, but it will help me figure out if I should spends hours and days studying the subject. I don’t see anything wrong with that approach

Thank you. I will read the material of convoy s2 modding

Dont be afraid to send a PM to anyone on this forum for help with a specific question. Most members here are very willing to help, alot of good people here. More so than any other forum I have ever encountered.

Cool, thanks!

Here’s a good resource,

(That’ll be one million dollars please)

Thanks!
I own several small lights like convoy s21a - would that be a good one to practice modding on?

Patience, grasshopper.

Knowledge must be absorbed like the rain into soil, not poured from the river into a pitcher. Only then can you truly understand and be one with the flashlight.

Sounds very wise but also like a re-phrase of someone master yoda would say to the young Luke sky walker… be one with the light… appealing but I’m ok with being 2 or 3 with the light… as I plan to mod 2 or 3…. we shall see if I have enough paitience to do it the old fashioned way…. I know getting a mentor right off the bat sounds like cheating when you say it on a forum… but there are many different ways of education … all have it’s advantages

I made a tips and tricks thread that might help Light building tips

One also has to be prepared for destroying/ruining parts especially in the beginning stages.

Have a grounded work surface, and ground yourself:

Depending on where you live, any number of us could be nearby — so you could always offer to host a modders party and provide pizza

Thanks. Appears to be very useful!
