Average dude reviews #3 - Astrolux K1

(Disclaimer) Hi, This is the third in a little series of average dude reviews. These are reviews for the potential non-flashaholics that may wonder in. Some of you guys do such great and detailed reviews but they are sometimes hard to follow and sometimes I just want to hear if something is pretty cool or kinda blah. I know a bit about flashlights, but don’t mod, or program, and can’t tell which emitter i’m using just by looking at it. Also, maybe the manufactures here want a “muggles” perspective. So that’s what up!

This is an interesting little light that’s been around for a while with bunch of features packed into a small footprint and costs $14ish. It totally does them all. In my opinion none very well, but dude it’s 14 bucks. That’s like a dollar per feature. Let’s get in to it.

Build quality: Not bad. What would you expect. I’ve knocked it around and it’s still in one piece. The main lens slides a bit, questioning the waterproofness, but other than that, solid. Not going to test it, but if I ever fall in a pool and it stops working; will update.

Main light: It’s bright on high. Really. I got the cool white version with four brightness levels and a blinky. So the beam profile and power are good, but the color is pretty ugly. It’s like a white/blue/purple large hot spot, but in the center is a yellow/brown spot. I don’t even know how that happens.

Red light: It’s a nice red, but has artifact. I like red light options because I think they preserve night vision, and maybe are harder for other people to see if you’re doing something and don’t want to be seen. There’s some science regarding photons, and nanometers, and rods, and cones etc, but it’s really about personal preference. Also, how does it work for someone who’s color blind? I think they see reds and greens as grey… grey light? We should take a poll.

UV: This is my only UV light. I was so excited. Not that I had a lot of CSI needs, but figured it would be fun at parties or something. It does work, however it’s very low brightness and hard to see any florescence unless it’s dark and you hold it right on top of an item. I don’t know what people usually use UV light for but you could use this if you had a time machine, and go to a dance club in the 1990’s (rave or goth) and want to check your pants for any embarrassing stains before you get hit by the black light, or you could use it to check potentially counterfeit bills in a generally dark area.

Buttons: Nah man. First the “main’ square button is for the auxiliary functions, and the triangle button is for the main light which is counter intuitive. Also, you have to hold a little long to turn it on. This is probably so it doesn’t turn on hanging from your keys, but it’s annoying and there should just be some lock out feature, which there isn’t. It only turned on once accidentally before I decided to try something else.

Key ring: I really like the key ring attachment. It’s two small bent bars instead of a standard ring or hole.

USB: It works well, connects smoothly, and the rubber flap that protects the usb is a good precise fit.

In the end, I like the look, shape, concept, and features, but don’t really like how it does most of that stuff. I’m sure there are people that this light makes sense for. My guess is it would be good for bartenders, bouncers, and budget batmen, where it doesn’t matter what the light quality looks like as long as it preforms the functions, and I’ll keep it incase I find myself in one of those situations.

This is a half thumbs up.
