That’s not the LED manufacturing division, which is the one that matters to us, the one that got bought out is the less successful division that makes light bulbs and streetlights.

I didn’t know people had so much attachment to Cree lightbulbs and luminaire fixtures.

Cree formerly had 3 divisions. Their bread and butter is the LED division. This was not for sale.

Their 2nd division was Wolfspeed. This company does high speed high power transistors that use the same SiC and GaN as their LEDs. This was also not for sale.

Their 3rd division did bulbs and luminaires. Fully integrated consumer products. Originally Cree started making bulbs because there were relatively few LEDs bulb on the market. In time the this division grew to just over 50% of their revenue. But from looking at their quarterly earning reports those numbers were slipping. It is still a money maker but their is a lot more competition in the market. So Cree sold it off while it could still be sold.

Overall I don’t blame them. Producing these complete products required a huge amount of human labor compared to LEDs. Bare LEDs don’t have customer service or warranty issues either.

If you really liked Cree bulbs (and I kitted out several buildings with them) then the quality of those will almost certainly slip.

The LEDs are still Cree.

Wolfspeed is the driving factor in price of Cree stock, which is up about 8 percent since Jan. 1.

Ah! Relief. Didn't mean to jump the gun.
