Astrolux HL01 firmware problems (big problems)

Hi, I got this headlamp recently (with Anduril firmware). It is great light and I was enjoying it most of the time.

Everything started yesterday (scary background music)

I was reading a book at the lowest brightness and then suddenly flashlight went at 100%. And I turned it off and realized it set itself into Muggle mode. And it was ramping…sharply. Smooth ramping and then jumped at random brightness. Or jumped at random brightness after flashing a while. Or it got stuck at the lowest brightness one time. Good HL01 has factory reset function…

Has anyone had the same issue?

Sounds like they’ve shipped it with the firmware with the known Muggle Mode issue. Problem is, it’s not an official build (checking TK’s repository) so they’d need to release their .hwdef and .h files for to someone to make a new build.

The other option is to try and reverse engineer it for a hacked version; I’d give it a go, but I don’t have an HL01 to test with shrug

Sounds more like an issue with the switch.

@oweban The muggle mode bug did occur only when the flashlight is already in muggle mode.

Ah, apologies - I saw “muggle” and misread.

:weary:

That makes sense.

I got a little worried and my HL01 is getting close.

The muggle mode bug was present only in the first batches of the D4v2 and no other flashlight. Chances that Astrolux uses exactly that build are absolutely tiny. But the code is GPL licensed, so you can ask them for the code and we can have a look at it.

Switch? I am ramping up, set desired brightness and then flashlight is changing it to lower (always the same) brightness. And muggle mode was set twice yesterday. Or it was ramping smoothly from 100% to e.g. 20% and then went into the lowest brightness.
I’m not sure, but I noticed a bit flickering, like in candlelight mode, but just slightly and I’m not sure if it was just me or not.

Och and everything started happening after me messing in party strobe mode. I was trying to set just the right speed of blinks, ramping up and down for some time, and then flashlight was stuck in the max ramping speed and was not responding. Only way to turn it off was unscrewing the tailcap. And after that it went just crazy, making all that stuff yesterday.
I was so afraid I unscrewed the tailcap…

I have to make review of it so I need to know if it’s only this sample issue, or more spread problem.

So oweban, it is not TK’s firmware? Or is it changed by manufacturer?

We don’t know. The manufacturer hasn’t released the code they use (although they are required to release it).

You’re right - I blame late night thinking.

Mocarny - it does use Anduril, but we don’t know what modifications they’ve made to the hardware definitions that are required to build a version, or if they’ve just used another light’s firmware. The only way we’ll find out is if they release the source code (and not just the .hex file) as is required by GPL3.

Is it possible after I was messing with party strobe the flashlight gone insane and freaked out forever?

No.

edit: Maybe, we do not know if they’ve changed something in the code that can cause this, but I doubt it.
